To banish cat from the house?

At night.

Have rehomed the bloody thing in the garage.

We haven't had a litter tray indoors for over a year. Had an outside one for a while which she didn't use so I removed it. For the last few weeks, when it's been wet outside, she has been shitting in her bed. Two mornings in a row now I've come down to it.

I don't want an indoor tray again so have locked her in the garage with tray and food where she will go every night over the winter from now on.

DC think IABU but they're not cleaning up the shit and having to do two boil washes, one for bed, one to clean machine!

Is your garage attached to the house? Could you put a cat flap into the garage and have the tray in there? Then cat could use tray without going outside

shesabloodywitch · 30/11/2018 08:32

I hope this is a joke? My cat is old now refuses to go outside the litter tray stinks to high heaven but I would never do that. If you have a pet you should look after it properly or you should regime her

Harebellmeadow · 30/11/2018 08:36

Please have her vet checked. Because a cat wont crap in its bed without good reason. They normally hide their poo and if she isnt doing so, or is defacating in her nesting spot, something is wrong so please please getbher checked out. My cat died this month and i wish i had recognised the distress signs earlier

And YABU - get a litter tray for the winter. cats are not dogs. Or get yourself an outside toilet in the garage and let her have your loo Grin

Claw001 · 30/11/2018 08:39

youshallnotpass I agree, I don’t think this is real

The4thSandersonSister · 30/11/2018 08:44

Why post this in AIBU when you could post in LitterTray?

empmalswa · 30/11/2018 08:47

I'd do the same if my cats decided to start shitting in my house after they'd been litter trained and learnt to go outside

Really? I mean really?

Surely not?

It wouldn't cross your mind at any point that the cat had actually not 'decided' to shit in the house, but was in fact unwell?

How do you people get through life Confused

Regnamechanger · 30/11/2018 09:03

With my cat this was the first sign that he had an incurable problem with his spine. He was sleeping in his bed, then not getting the signals that he needed to go to the toilet in time to wake up and make it outside. Cats are clean creatures, they don't want to shit in their beds. Your cat needs to see the vet.

lottielottielottie · 30/11/2018 09:14

Ok so being a cat owner myself I get how cleaning litter trays is not a particularly nice job, but not providing a litter tray indoors when cat is staying indoors is cruel!
I mean where do you expect cat to poop?
If cleaning the cat litter out is a problem (or smelly cat litter you don't want this indoors ) I recommend silica cat litter, the silica crystals absorb approx 100 times their weight in liquid & they trap the pissy smells. Absolutely no smell of cat wee until about 3/4 weeks. It has to be changed approx once a month or every 3 weeks or so. Poo has to removed which can simply be picked up with a scoop & put in nappy bag then bin. Hooded cat litter tray is an option too.
Please don't do this to your pet. Cat must have pooed in bed out of desperation.

FeckingEll · 30/11/2018 09:16

Cat survived with little trauma it seems. Had wet food and perched on fence staring at birds.

Litter tray unused, no shit anywhere else.

It was dry outside last night before I got her in, that's probably why.

TBH garage is well insulated (new build) and only marginally colder than downstairs of house overnight as we don't leave heating on as too hot upstairs. Cat normally sleeps in lounge on her own so not lonely in garage.

Have ordered a self heating cat cave for when it's colder.

No matter what litter you use, cat shit still stinks. When cat had an indoor tray, it was disinfected with Method spray (non toxic to cats) every 2/3 days and shit scooped ASAP after it appeared but it still stunk house out for hours afterwards. Those who think their cats don't stink are nose blind!

Cat was a rescue from CPL, well treated and lucky to have us.

Do any of you who are attacking me and calling me abusive, eat animals by any chance? I don't.

What would you do if you were taken short during the night and there was no toilet indoors?

And a litter tray doesn't stink if you clean it every day.

Can you not put a cat flap in so that she can get in and out?

Cleojinx · 30/11/2018 09:28

Definitely not nose blind, intact I'm pregnant so my sense of smell is heightened! If you get rid of the poo as soon as you can and dispose of it the smell will leave shortly after.

It's not pleasant to have a smell at all but it comes with having a cat

Vitalogy · 30/11/2018 09:34

Can you not put a cat flap in so that she can get in and out? Yes cat flap in garage would be a good idea.

Those who think their cats don't stink are nose blind! The cat litter I mentioned early really does help. There's no lingering of smell for hours if removed straight away, no more than 10 mins I'd say, quicker if window is opened. Our cat only poops once a day so it's no bother really.

payperview · 30/11/2018 09:36

You should rehome the poor thing to someone who isn't cruel to animals. You don't deserve her.

I wouldn't want to go outside in this weather. Where do you expect her to go if you are not providing a tray?

Terrible person.

Claw001 · 30/11/2018 09:36

How can the cat use an outdoor litter tray, without a cat flap?

TopBitchoftheWitches · 30/11/2018 09:40

What @Cleojinx said.

You clearly were not cleaning the tray immediately.

dontfluffthefluffer · 30/11/2018 09:48

😂 op: AIBU?
Almost everyone : yes, yes you are.
Op: No I'm not, I know best and am better than you as I'm a vegetarian.

Sure thing treacle.

FeckingEll · 30/11/2018 09:48

Absolute rubbish TopBitch. Unless it was an overnight shit which obviously wouldn't be dealt with until I came down.

No matter what you put down to mask the smell, it still stinks.

"Do any of you who are attacking me and calling me abusive, eat animals by any chance? I don't"

In other words "I got a pet but refuse to give it a toilet because it shit stinks and I don't want to clean up after it, so I'm going to lock it in the garage all winter. But I can't possibly be a terrible pet owner because I don't eat meat".

Soubriquet · 30/11/2018 09:52

I have an outdoor cat. She has her food and water bowls indoors but she only comes inside to eat and buggers off out again.

She has the warmth of the water pipes in the outhouse to sleep on if she wishes.

She’s more than welcome to come indoors for the day/night and she does occasionally but I can’t force her to stay in. She hates it

She has her own little poo patch at the back corner of the garden too.

Personally I find shutting the cat in the garage a bit mean.

Fair enough if he could come and go but confined to one room no

Claw001 · 30/11/2018 09:56

Locking cat in the house all night, with nowhere to shit or wee. Then wondering why it shits! Is cruel.

Are you a bit gormless OP?

empmalswa · 30/11/2018 09:59

Cat was a rescue from CPL, well treated and lucky to have us.

Yet you have ignored numerous posts regarding the behaviour change being a possible symptom of illness.

Yeah. Your cat is just so lucky Hmm

empmalswa · 30/11/2018 10:01

Do any of you who are attacking me and calling me abusive, eat animals by any chance? I don't.

Yay. You are the winner then Confused

Claw001 · 30/11/2018 10:05

Advice

Change type of litter so doesn’t smell as much
Change litter tray more often
Get a cap flat, so cat has somewhere to shit
Seek vet attention

Oh no, my cat is just a bit wilful, so I will lock it in the garage! Angry

Very rarely do thread winds me up, but this takes the Biscuit

OlderThanAverageforMN · 30/11/2018 10:15

It is not mean to keep a cat in a garage, it's not being forced to live outside for goodness sake. Lots of people have cat flaps in their garage doors, and lots of cats are actually outdoor cats, and live a lovely life ie: on farms. PP's have said their cats stay outdoors most of the night, as does mine, by choice, he has a fur coat, which is now lovely and thick for the winter, he also puts on a kilo of extra weight, ready for winter. I have never had a litter tray for any of my cats.

My prime concern for this cat is that it may be poorly, as it is very unnatural for a cat to shit in it's bed. Cats will go outside to do their business in all weathers, or hold on, and that is perfectly natural.

Claw001 · 30/11/2018 10:19

It’s mean to keep a cat locked inside the house with no access to a place to toilet.

It’s mean to lock a cat in a garage all night.
