To think if you call you child such a ridiculous name

They will get mocked at some point.

The child in question is called Abcde, pronouced ab-city.

Whilst it was very unkind to do it so the child can hear, I think it is the most ridiculous name I have ever seen.

The person shouldn’t have called commented but the twatty parents have basically pinned a target to this poor child’s head! Totally foreseeable the name would be ridiculed if my parents had done this to me I would have hated them for it and changed it as soon as possible

Maryjoyce · 01/12/2018 07:09

Because Americans can’t speak English that’s why it sounds like ab city

StripySocksAndDocs · 01/12/2018 07:28

Abcde pronounced as Ab-city makes perfect sense. Taking into account the fact there’s different American accents.

Abcde as a name doesn’t make sense. Though that’s a personal opinion (widely held).

There’s a few weird names in my family tree. No clue where they come from, though they are all have an early 19th century occurrence.

Catsize · 01/12/2018 08:12

Probably sounds a bit like 'obesity' with an American accent.

PetiteMamaNoel · 01/12/2018 08:17

A man called one of his sons Loser, the other Winner. Guess who ended up being a success?

*true story btw

PetiteMamaNoel · 01/12/2018 08:20

I met a baby called Sunshine.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 01/12/2018 08:26

This thread is like bingo
With the same myths trotted out on every “weird names” thread
The country must be heaving in La-sha’s Hmm

SoupDragon · 01/12/2018 08:34

There is a L'A though.

CurlsLDN · 01/12/2018 08:38

So many people here saying

'the employee was awful for mocking the childs name on social media'

'that name is awful/ridiculous/etc'

Do you not see that you're just as bad as the employee? Ok you're not saying it in front of the child, but you are also posting her name on social media and saying how awful it is.

GunpowderGelatine · 01/12/2018 08:44

I wondered how long it would take for someone to trot out the La-a bollocks. It's a urban myth, as has been said many times in MN there are no La-A's recorded in this country

SoupDragon · 01/12/2018 09:23

Like I said, there is a L'A though. Unless that birth entry is a mistake.

CurlsLDN · 01/12/2018 10:02

But soup that's LapostropheA, not Ladasha

SoupDragon · 01/12/2018 11:02

They're using the less traditional pronunciation.

CanadianJohn · 01/12/2018 16:15

There are a couple of US chess kids with the first names Awonder and Adream. In Canada, we have a kid with the first name Prince.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/12/2018 16:26

I've come across quite a few named Precious

Possibly the influence of a certain detective agency.

But do any of you remember Precious McKenzie the weight-lifter? - he was only about 4'6" and phenomenally strong!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/12/2018 16:27

Oh - sorry Serendippity

Just read back through the thread and saw that you had already mentioned him.

Apologies.

HeffalumpsDaughter · 01/12/2018 16:29

My FIL is one of 9 brothers. FIL was the third born and has a very traditional, English name. His youngest brother was called Doctor. He always says that he and his brothers were such a disappointment to his dm as they went down the mines at 14 and dropped out of school. She decided to name her last dc Doctor to try and inspire him to do more with his life. He died of polio aged 10 Sad.

Both my dh and my 2 sil’s are doctors though, so she got her doctors in the end.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/12/2018 16:33

I’ve come across a child named Salmon.

If he was from a middle-eastern culture, it is a form of Solomon.

(Salmon/ Salman/ Suleiman/ Sulayman/Shlomo - There are probably more variations)

calpop · 01/12/2018 16:40

I went to school with an American boy called Gaylord. I felt really sorry for him in year 8 when everyone realised the association. He was actuallyly Gaylord something something the Third so I gues ait was a family name.

phlebasconsidered · 01/12/2018 16:48

I taught a girl named Tyranny.
I actually asked the mum how she chose the name and she said she heard the word on a playstation game. Probably a war one, then.

I've also had the pleasure of teaching an Audi ( after the car) and a Liverpool.

Plus there was a fad a few years ago of one letter names for boys. Lots of J, K and C.

I also taught one Jonquil which is a beautiful name. It's now my daughters middle name.

onegiftedgal · 01/12/2018 16:52

Agree that this one is an unusual name but what I have never understood is anyone wanting to name their child with a name in the 'Top 20'.
Why would anyone want their child to have a really common name? Why haven't you put any thought into your child's name? Why do the majority of people go safe - is it the sheep mentality?

JacquesHammer · 01/12/2018 16:56

Why would anyone want their child to have a really common name?

Because when I chose it I was 9 and had no idea it would become popular

Why haven't you put any thought into your child's name?

She was named after the author of a book that became very special to me.

Why do the majority of people go safe - is it the sheep mentality

I just didn’t want to change my mind.

That said she has gone through her entire primary school career and is now into secondary without coming across another...

Talkinpeece · 01/12/2018 17:11

I assume that Henrietta Lyon who went to my school got married
and DH's colleague Michael Hunt stopped people shortening his name

Interestingly Moon, Dweezil and Ahmet and Diva Zappa all use their given names and are apparently very rounded people.

SerenDippitty · 01/12/2018 17:39

What’s wrong with giving your child a normal name? Why does it matter if there are children in the same class with the same name. There were others at school with the same name as me and aI don’t feel scarred by that.

SerenDippitty · 01/12/2018 17:45

Schadenfreudepersonified no apology necessary😀
