To think I can't afford principles when I need a job

Cookiesagain · 29/11/2018 00:12

Well really i already know I can't be fussy with job applications just now. But just wondering what it's like to do a job you don't feel good about.

Its a civil service job so not criminal or anything like that. But it's with DWP and I know I will not feel good doing it.

Take it- it's a job! I don't think many unemployed could be choosy about where they work and afford to be 'moral'.

I sold a story (cute, premature baby home for Christmas) to the daily mail for £500, because otherwise Christmas was looking really bleak. Nothing like sidebar of shame but you know if I was desperate, I'd take pretty much any legal job including debt collection and abattoir/morgue tech etc

Madein1995 · 29/11/2018 06:50

It is a long term solution though, or at least part of one. Police, social workers, charities working with victims of DV - they all learn to detach and in some cases that skill is part of the person spec

Of course its important to practice self care. Recognising your triggers and when things upset you, and asking for support when you need it. But it a long term solution in many jobs

I think it would be great having someone like you working for the DWP. You have a conscience, you want to help. They need more people like that.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 29/11/2018 07:09

I think having good and efficient people doing the job is critical
Do it and learn , and drive improvements

saoirse31 · 29/11/2018 07:21

Wow, you should take the job and grow up a little. Everyone working in the DWP is a vile twat? Pure crap. Don't take the job then and when brexit impact kicks in what are you going to do?

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/11/2018 07:21

dwp send my son a £10 christmas bonus every year. they are not all that bad.

in the past they have paid for boat loads of unmarked greeny yellow bananas, and the rejects. they pay for sandwiches.

they are paying for petrol and parking.

they pay for fidget spinners and fidget toys and playdough

they pay for my lunch once a week.

they pay for therapy balls and foam mats.

they are not all that bad.

though it would help if you were someone who knows that the average 8 year old does not need a potty. Hmm

PiperPublickOccurrences · 29/11/2018 07:22

Not everyone who works for the DWP is in a job centre though. My neighbour works with them - she's in a large office block dong something with the administration of National Insurance numbers. She has never dealt with people looking for work.

A job is a job. It's fine to pick and choose who you'd like to work for when you're in a job and have the luxury to do so. Different matter when you're out of work and desperately looking.

Maryjoyce · 29/11/2018 07:23

If need money do anything

HellenaHandbasket · 29/11/2018 07:26

I would do it. I'd do it as well as I could, and if it wasn't right look for another job from a position of employment.

Carouselfish · 29/11/2018 07:29

It's a bit less black and white than say, if I as a strong believer in animal rights, were offered a job in an abbattoir. I would do absolutely anything to avoid that, there's no price I wouldn't pay.

Blacktoffeecat · 29/11/2018 07:33

Someone has to work there otherwise the system would be much slower and worse for the end users. Why are they vilified like this? Surely the workers are only implementing systems laid down by the government?
I really wouldn’t worry about it, just do the job to the best of your ability. Good luck

Nenic · 29/11/2018 07:34

My friend worked in a job centre. She had to leave because of all the abuse and attacks she received. That’s why I wouldn’t work there.

TheBigBangRocks · 29/11/2018 07:34

As long as they illegal if I needed a job then principles would come second. I need food and heat more. I might quickly change jobs after but wouldn't decline a job and remain out of work.

Ohshitwhatnext · 29/11/2018 07:41

OP - it is a job and if you bring a moral compass to it all the better.

This. Whenever I have had to phone official bodies I have had a few who were horrible but I have spoken to a few lovely people who genuinely sounded like they cared. As I get looked down on much of the time it really made a difference to my day.

altiara · 29/11/2018 07:41

Have you got the role or just applying?
Really just go for it, if you need a job, you need a job. And it’s great that people that care take these roles.
If just applying - then it’s good practice especially with interviews.
Good luck!

Gwenhwyfar · 29/11/2018 07:45

"@Cookiesagain not quite the same thing but I got put forward for a role in the Exiting the EU office. As a remainer and lots of friends in that camp, I simply couldn’t bear to do it. Role was ideal, company/dept was not. So I sympathise. "

This is a pity. I don't want the Brexit dept to be full of Brexiteers. The Welsh Government are also recruiting people for their Brexit department. It is likely to be quite full of Remainers who somehow hope they can make their own jobs disappear.

MichaelMumsnet · 29/11/2018 07:47

Apologies for the slight derail. Just dropping by to remove a couple of posts from an underwear troll.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/11/2018 07:48

"I could have refused (although would be jobless if I had). "

Well then you couldn't have refused then. That was a terrible abuse of power.

Cookiesagain · 29/11/2018 07:50

For the record, I'm in work but it's coming to an end. So tiny bit of leeway timing wise but thinking long term. I didn't intend to vilify those working in dwp - although I can see in raising the question I have. The humanity and kindness of dwp staff has helped me deal with tough times.

In the past I have been able to make decisions based on preference, whether political or conscience or location etc. But i guess I'm just realising things are different as the alternative wasn't risking unemployment.
I've realised the risk around short term funding in the type of work I'm doing now.

I'm applying - not been offered. Sorry I realise that was unclear.

Wanted to add to the comments to Deb. What happened was not OK and should be reported to CQC or equivalent in other nations. [Flowers]

Looking at the OP upside down, I used to work for a charity that delivers much needed frontline support and is usually is seen as being on the side of the angels. It was a seriously toxic organisation to work for with a horrible bullying culture.

Depending on the role at the DWP might you be able to remain within your personal values and actually help people?

When I am struggling to make a decision I always look at the options and choose the one that would make me feel better.

In your case, I would accept the DWP job. Unless I am being bullied or being treated awfully, I really am much happier working than not. You can keep looking for another job and it is much easier to explain a job that wasn't quite right than a period of unemployment to future employers.

Until you are there you really have no idea what it will be like. Some of the best jobs I've had are the ones I accepted half heartedly.

Avegemitesandwich · 29/11/2018 08:09

Are people really saying that every single person working at the DWP is a heartless arsehole? That's a lot of people!

Believeitornot · 29/11/2018 08:18

DWP will be full of people who think IDS and Esther McVey are knob heads, that the policies suck and that politicians are narcasstic idiots.

I would work for DWP but i would certainly do the bare minimum to earn my wage if I had anything to do with UC
