To wonder if this text message accidentally sent to me was actually about me?

Step mum invited me and dd round for dinner this evening. My dad died a few years ago and we don't see each other often but do try and keep in touch. She married my dad when I was in my 30s so I don't know her that well but we've always got on fine.

So had a nice enough evening. Ate, made small talk and left. Did all the usual stuff of asking how she was, work, her mother, admired new extension, etc. I guess we don't have much in common so we don't get on like a house on fire but I think generally find enough to talk about.

About 5 mins after I left hers I got a gif text which said.

Bored
Bored
Bored
Bored
Bored.

Followed immediately by a text saying "sorry if I've just sent you an odd message, I can't control me new iPhone."

I'm paranoid she meant to send that message to a friend about me/the evening. She wasn't texting me about something else and clicked on a gif by accident as she'd no reason to text me.

I would think the same as you.

Happytea · 27/11/2018 21:45

Yep. I would think the same

masterandmargarita · 27/11/2018 21:46

Yep, but who writes such mean things. Even if I was bored I wouldn't write that

bastardkitty · 27/11/2018 21:47

I would reply 'I think we both know exactly what happened with your iphone'

MissionItsPossible · 27/11/2018 21:47

I would think it an accident unless you have history. I’ve done it before by accident

SandAndSea · 27/11/2018 21:47

It's possible but it could really be a phone thing.

Move2WY · 27/11/2018 21:47

Probably a good enough reason not to return the invite

Tistheseason17 · 27/11/2018 21:47

Yep - message was about you.

Just ignore

halfwitpicker · 27/11/2018 21:48

Bit weird either way

MissionItsPossible · 27/11/2018 21:48

@masterandmargarita

She didn’t write anything she sent a gif via a text, if I understood the OP correctly.

Heartofglass21 · 27/11/2018 21:49

I would be suspicious - particularly by the immediate follow-up disclaimer. Send her a gif back of someone yawning, and text 'you're not the only one who was bored.'

NobodysChild · 27/11/2018 21:50

Yeah, the same. She can't control new iPhone, but can send a sentence straight after explaining why you got the bored message? She has definitely sent that about you, to you, by mistake.

trojanpony · 27/11/2018 21:50

Sorry to say but... Your gut instinct is probably right

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/11/2018 21:51

I mean phones don't send random gif texts to people.

I'd be more likely to be lieve her if she'd been texting me and a gif had got inserted into the message. She has only just got an iPhone so is still getting used to it.

Is she feeling a bit fed up in general?

My Mum used to say how bored she was.

Tbh if it wasn't for me needing to be a hands on Grandmother, so would I be.

So it might not be directed at you, as such.

NotANotMan · 27/11/2018 21:51

Weird that she sent a text saying 'bored' after you left, it's the wrong tense. ' How was your evening?' 'Bored' doesn't make sense. 'Boring' would be more fitting.
She might have text someone 'bored' while you were there but she didn't.

I think you're probably right though :(

BumbleyBum · 27/11/2018 21:51

Hmmm it’s a bit odd, I think I’d think the same. Is she usually bitchy? If not, perhaps give her the benefit of the doubt. Did you reply to her?

masterandmargarita · 27/11/2018 21:52

Yes sorry it was a gif. Still v odd

I agree that she sent that about you.

I'd respond: 'oh dear, I presumed you were referring to our evening! Good luck with the new iPhone'

And then ignore & avoid her forever, life's too short to waste time on bitches.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 27/11/2018 21:53

Would she be the type of person to send a gif text? I don't know any older people who would in my 30s and I wouldn't know how to send one. I think probably a phone error.

SaucyJack · 27/11/2018 21:53

Is that her usual style of communication? Does she ever use GIFs on Facebook or whatevs?

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/11/2018 21:54

I'm almost imagining a friend messaging her saying "how did it go" and she meant to send them that gif back? Or that she'd told her friend earlier on that she'd let her know how the evening went once I'd left and that was the message she sent?

She's not normally bitchy. She can be quite straight talking I guess.

SabineUndine · 27/11/2018 21:55

I would think she is getting used to her new phone and accidentally sent you a text meant for someone else.

I wouldn't be bothering with her in the future.

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/11/2018 21:55

She's not on fb and doesn't do social media.

She's my step mum not a friend so I can't exactly ignore her.

I just replied "no worries, x".

I wouldn't want to fall out with her even if I do genuinely bore her.
