To wonder if this text message accidentally sent to me was actually about me?

Step mum invited me and dd round for dinner this evening. My dad died a few years ago and we don't see each other often but do try and keep in touch. She married my dad when I was in my 30s so I don't know her that well but we've always got on fine.

So had a nice enough evening. Ate, made small talk and left. Did all the usual stuff of asking how she was, work, her mother, admired new extension, etc. I guess we don't have much in common so we don't get on like a house on fire but I think generally find enough to talk about.

About 5 mins after I left hers I got a gif text which said.

Bored
Bored
Bored
Bored
Bored.

Followed immediately by a text saying "sorry if I've just sent you an odd message, I can't control me new iPhone."

I'm paranoid she meant to send that message to a friend about me/the evening. She wasn't texting me about something else and clicked on a gif by accident as she'd no reason to text me.

I'm surprised so many people think it was deliberate. Suggest there's a lot of people who do that kind of passive aggressive thing!

I've accidentally sent a gif before when I was messing around looking at them. I also sent a heart eyes emoji to someone I think he's a crush on me and I still don't know how I did it. I'm 29 and perfectly able to use my phone.

I think it's an unfortunate coincidence that the gif said bored.

DisappearingGirl · 27/11/2018 22:46

If she was bored while you were there surely she'd have sent the text while you were there not after you'd gone? I'd assume probably genuine mistake!

ItsJustSuchAFaff · 27/11/2018 22:47

Doesn’t anyone else want to know what the row of fat hamsters looked like?! Grin

WindyWednesday · 27/11/2018 22:49

My friend is always sending me random gifs. Same one every time. She has no idea how she’s doing it, it’s comical. Same cartoon man.

Mummymummums · 27/11/2018 22:52

I'd think mistake. If it was a reply to a text she'd opened it would have been done as a reply and not to you by mistake.
Is she even a gif type person?

cariadlet · 27/11/2018 22:54

I guess we don't have much in common so we don't get on like a house on fire but I think generally find enough to talk about.

Sounds like you were pretty bored as well Smile

Maybe it was the phone playing up. Maybe a friend had asked her how the evening had gone and she accidentally sent the reply to you.
But even if that's the case, she was hardly bitching about you.

It sounds like you both get on ok, don't have a strong friendship but both feel some kind of social obligation to keep in touch with each other (although neither would be upset if the relationship died a natural death)

Joinourclub · 27/11/2018 22:54

My 5 year old sent me the bored bored bored gif three times today whilst playing on his dads phone! I can quite easily see how someone like my mums age could send a random gif by mistake.

cariadlet · 27/11/2018 22:59

sorry to derail the thread, but what is a gif anyway?

CheeseEater · 27/11/2018 23:03

I would give her the benefit of the doubt. She could have gone into her texts and the last one was from you, then wondered what the funny symbols were next to the writing bit and pressed one and sent it by trying to click it. She’d know enough about how phones work to type an apology and quickly send it.

TheDogAteMySock · 27/11/2018 23:04

I suspect it was meant for someone else, but she sent it to you by mistake... But... Have none of you pp's ever done anything similar... Exaggerated for comedic effect? It wasn't even that she'd typed 'bored, bored, bored'...it was a gif, I'm assuming one she'd found on the internet. And to be fair, you said yourself you don't have much in common, so I'm guessing you didn't have the most scintillating evening. I would forget about it, I'm sure she's mortified, so just rise above it.

pepperjack · 27/11/2018 23:07

I think her boyfriend has sent her the gif and she clicked on it and forwarded it to you.

I wouldn't know where to find a gifConfused!

Lindtnotlint · 27/11/2018 23:07

DEFINITELY a mistake. It’s not plausible that she is sending mass gifs around the place. Much more likely to be an error.*

  • ok I may be assuming she is somewhat like my DM or MIL.
JudasPrudy · 27/11/2018 23:09

I honestly think it was a genuine mistake.

Wanderlusting99 · 27/11/2018 23:09

I'd think mistake. Last night I managed to open an encrypted facebook chat (didn't know such a thing existed) and call the same person through facebook and leave apparently an 8 minute answerphone message on facebook, this is someone I've not messaged in about 3 years so no idea why it picked them, as far as I was aware all I'd done is put my phone down on the passenger seat when I got in, picked it up when I arrived and it had had a whole adventure I was unaware of.

ozymandiusking · 27/11/2018 23:11

What's a gif?

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/11/2018 23:12

I don’t think it was meant for you or about you. She hasn’t had her phone long. It sounds like an unfortunate mistake.

JudasPrudy · 27/11/2018 23:12

I've just checked and there's a few of those gifs with 'boring boring boring' and 'work work work' at the top of the list so entirely possible she didn't search for bored just accidentally pressed it or something.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/11/2018 23:13

A gif is an image file. A fixed image or a really short video. Usually taken from the Internet.

MeMeMeow85 · 27/11/2018 23:14

She most likely sent the message to you, because you were the subject she was thinking about.

Doesn’t sound like there’s any reason to maintain contact.

AmericanEskimoDoge · 27/11/2018 23:14

I think it could be a genuinely random accidental gif.

I think you're right to try to ignore it. Smile

WhyAmISoCold · 27/11/2018 23:15

I would have thought she meant she was bored after you left, not whilst you were there as this was sent after.

sonandhelpneeded · 27/11/2018 23:17

Oh lord! Ignore!

CrispbuttyNo1 · 27/11/2018 23:18

I’ve had an iPhone for years and I’ve still almost sent gifs by accident recently since the updates. I honestly think this was user error and not intentional.

IslaMann · 27/11/2018 23:20

I’ve just had a look at my iPhone keyboard. If you press the gif symbol (a red magnifying glass) then lots of gifs come up, including one that says boring multiple times. So it’s entirely possible it was a genuine mistake

everybodypuuuuulllll · 27/11/2018 23:20

She does have a boyfriend so maybe he'd texted her asking her how she was and she's was just replying meaning she was bored now she was alone?

Yes, it could have been a private joke or a come on that they share that's nothing to do with you.

It's certainly possible she meant it about you. But it's not the only possibility.

Or - as others say if she's not the gifs type, it could be a total accident. My friend's 18 month old sent her aunt a naked picture of her husband off her phone once! (Not an explicit pose, but still!!! Blush Blush)

I'd ignore it tbh, if no other issues in the relationship.
