Imagine giving a shit

FranciscoGoya · 27/11/2018 12:01

Dave Gorman did a "Modern Life is Goodish" where he covered misheard words that get backfilled into phrases

Yes! Here are my faves:

Doggy Dog World
Right from the gecko
Escape goat
A bowl in a china shop Grin

FranciscoGoya · 27/11/2018 12:02

It's called an eggcorn

egg·corn
/ˈeɡkôrn/Submit
noun
a word or phrase that results from a mishearing or misinterpretation of another, an element of the original being substituted for one that sounds very similar or identical (e.g. tow the line instead of toe the line ).

BonnieandHyde · 27/11/2018 12:05

You'd hate us OP. We call Parmesan cheese "Farmers-Bum Cheese" in our family 😂👍

Have done since we were tiny. I blame my mother!

Flooffloof · 27/11/2018 12:06

I see spag bowl on a fb slow cooker page. I can't say it gives me rage, but I have to stop myself letting them know it's wrong.
In fact most spelling mistakes on Facebook I want to tell them. It wouldn't go down too well so I don't but I have hidden a few pages and people just because the spelling is constantly awful.

Booksandwine80 · 27/11/2018 12:07

They are most definitely saying “bowl” as it’s written clear as day.

Wtf has a crossiant got to do with it?!

I don’t necessarily “give a shit” it was just a general wondering this morning Grin

Oh, and if you “don’t give a shit” scroll past Hmm

In our house spag bog is because my parents were taking the piss out of spag bol, back in the eighties and it stuck!

SilentIsla · 27/11/2018 12:08

Like a bowl in a china shop?!🤣

ravenmum · 27/11/2018 12:09

First OED mention of "spag bol" is from 1970 :)

Can imagine people calling it "spag bowl" though, like a salad bowl etc.
Like we say "an orange" instead of "a norange" - what idiots, eh? :)

I love it. The evolution of language is fascinating.

SilentIsla · 27/11/2018 12:09

The winner is:
...right from the gecko!!!!

Fabulous stuff😂

SilentIsla · 27/11/2018 12:10

Tow the line is wrong but, in its defence, it does make a kind of sense. Lol

wrenika · 27/11/2018 12:11

It's 'bog' in this house. Spag for the pasta, and bog is the mince/sauce part. So you may request extra 'bog' for your pasta. I don't really care cause it's a complete bastardisation on anything that may be remotely like a traditional Italian meal...so I think corrupted the name is fair game!

SilentIsla · 27/11/2018 12:12

I din’t think it’s about the evolution of language at all. It’s about ignorance.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/11/2018 12:12

"... gives me the rage."

Utter nonsense. Wink

SilentIsla · 27/11/2018 12:12

...don’t

SilentIsla · 27/11/2018 12:14

And yes, it is an Fab name.

SilentIsla · 27/11/2018 12:15

And yes, it is an egg corn. Fab name.

SilentIsla · 27/11/2018 12:16

Grrrr

eggcorn

ravenmum · 27/11/2018 12:16

Ignorance plays a huge role in the evolution of language! It really did use to be a norange, until people got it mixed up. When you see people wisely telling you how to use words correctly, it's hilarious when you realise that what they are preaching would have been considered complete codswallop a century earlier.

Bluerussian · 27/11/2018 12:17

My husband calls it 'spag bog', sometimes just 'bog'. Not very nice really, is it? Someone ought to tell him, maybe all of you.

Spag bol is OK (by comparison to the above). While we are at it, I absolutely love the meal! Could eat it most days.

steppemum · 27/11/2018 12:18

"It's what men do who can't cook"

er, men who can't cook definitely can't cook spag bol!

Unless you mean they just open a jar of bolgnese sauce?

But real spag bol, does not involve jars.

Nousernameforme · 27/11/2018 12:20

We call it red pasta in this house as whatever i make it isn't bolognese

Redpriestandmozart · 27/11/2018 12:20

We went with Spag Bollox for a few years!

Cherries101 · 27/11/2018 12:20

It’s spag bol. Honestly the idiocy of some people!

Umbongointhejungle · 27/11/2018 12:21

Plebs
It’s ragu with parpadelle
