There seems to be a trend for people calling spaghetti bolognese “spag bowl”......gives me the rage Angry

AIBU?!

What phrases piss you off??!!

OP posts:
UpstartCrow · 27/11/2018 13:07

its Ragu actually.

WinterfellWench · 27/11/2018 13:08

'Spag bol' yeah, why not??? I always say that. It's 2 syllables instead of 6!

Never heard anyone say 'spag bowl!' Confused

DGRossetti · 27/11/2018 13:08

When we come across new words now it is just as likely that we see them in print as to hear them spoken.

There must be a word for words you mispronounce because you've only read them, not heard them ... it was years before I connected "Siobhan" with "Shavaughn" Grin

HomeMadeMadness · 27/11/2018 13:12

What is it with mumsnet and the abbreviation police? Surely lots of people use abbreviations? Unless you literally don't understand what they mean get over it!

Wheresthebeach · 27/11/2018 13:14

Oh...off to make some mac and cheese for lunch! Grin

flowery · 27/11/2018 13:20

"As does miwk or meawk instead of milk."

Sorry, I say 'miwk'. It's an accent thing. Life is too short to get irritated by regional accents, surely!

Bowl and bol also sound virtually indistinguishable in my accent OP. Bowl very slightly longer, but other than that, exactly the same.

BolleauxtoBankers · 27/11/2018 13:21

SilentIsla - was just about to post link to the same article you quoted Grin

gobbynorthernbird · 27/11/2018 13:27

I have seen 'spag bowl' written a number of times on Mumsnet. It makes my eye twitch.

WiddlinDiddlin · 27/11/2018 13:38

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the OP here..

I think she's saying people WRITE 'spag bowl' when they mean 'spag bol' and say 'spag bol'..

I haven't heard people say 'spag bowl', but I have seen plenty of people write it...

HappyHippy45 · 27/11/2018 13:39

Spaghetti bollock naked was commonly used when I worked in kitchens. Oh how we laughed when we heard it multiple time mes daily.
Unfortunately it stuck in my head and can't be removed.

TroysMammy · 27/11/2018 13:45

I live in Sketty but it's not the bollocks. It's just a suburb of Swansea.

i thought the OP was railing against the abomination that is the phrase (however you chose to pronounce it, it's still linguistic murder) of saying "spag bol" when you really mean "Spaghetti Bolognese". That is a pasta dish comprising spaghetti (long circular strands) with a sauce typical to the Bologna region of Italy.

It's only one step from that to "Tag. Carb.", and then (as James Acaster said, so presciently) you'd really have to abandon all your friends. Forever.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 27/11/2018 13:50

We're an Italian family and we always find it really bizarre when all these "Italians would/wouldn't" things come up.

We call it Bolognese (or just meat sauce) (and eat it with whatever pasta we've got or fancy) Ragu is different. Ragu has lumps of sort of stewing steak slow cooked in the tomato sauce which you don't eat with the pasta, but after, as your second course. Sometimes the meat is thin slices of beef rolled up.
I prefer the mince one myself as do most of the family.

ravenmum · 27/11/2018 13:52

Nah, it's definitely "bowl", she explains that later.

The first time I saw people writing "text" to mean the past tense (instead of "texted") I was surprised, as it sounds nothing like "texted" - guess they must be thinking it's "texed", and talk about texing people?

Holidayshopping · 27/11/2018 14:03

I think it would be good if the OP returned and clarified EXACTLY what they are cross about!

Op-is it

  1. the words spag Bol being used instead of spaghetti bolognese
  2. The words spag Bol being used verbally but because of their accent, it sounds like spag bowl.
  3. People writing down the words spag bowl instead of spag Bol.

Please put everyone out of their misery.

Poodles1980 · 27/11/2018 14:24

It’s long jobs with meat sauce in my house. We always called spaghetti long jobs growing up for some reason and my ds calls it meat sauce.

BumbleyBum · 27/11/2018 14:27

You’d hate what we call our cauliflower and broccoli cheese.. caulli brolli!!

Crunchymum · 27/11/2018 14:32

@Holidayshopping

I think it's number 3 (the OP listed at 12:07 but it's still not terribly clear what her issue is Grin)

Crunchymum · 27/11/2018 14:32

Listed = posted

Booksandwine80 · 27/11/2018 14:33

To clarify Grin it is people writing “spag bowl” that is pissing me off!

I’ve moved on now and something else is annoying me Wink

OP posts:
dontyouforgetaboutme · 27/11/2018 14:35

that would irritate me too OP, but I have never ever seen it.

Holidayshopping · 27/11/2018 14:54

Where have you seen this written, OP? I have to say I have never seen it written like that!

badtime · 27/11/2018 15:02

I have seen it written on MN.

Darkestnight · 27/11/2018 15:49

Spaggy Grin

PipGoesPop · 27/11/2018 15:53

Perhaps it's a poncey fusion dish spag bol meets budda bowl? Spag bowl. It'll be budda bol next.
