Christmas Trees in November

What is this fresh hell?

People putting their trees up in November WTAF? Its another week until bloody December?!

I hate the bloody commercialism the bloody colour themes people moaning about putting one up and having another two to go (in their own home so entirely optional).

Why does this have to be another “thing”.

Bah humbug I say.

I love Christmas so mine has been up for a week now, but if my dcs had anything to do with it, it would have been up in the middle of October when they saw it as I was getting the Halloween decs out.
My ds' also have an early January birthday so it comes down on NYE, ready for the new year and their birthday.

One of the barmaids at my local pub, told me last week that she had put up the tree at home, about four weeks ago,,then showed me a photo of it on her phone. Its a large tree, fully loaded with decorations,,with a huge stack of wrapped gifts under it. She has a partner.and two boys aged 8.and 4. She said I always put the tree up when October has finished !! She was slightly amused, when I told her, that we used to put up a tree about 22nd Dec,in the very oldie days ha ha.

Meh, it’s a month until christmas and we’re busy for the mext two weekends. DS loves it, it looks lovely, we usually wait until December but why not I say. All for a bit more festive cheer. 5 star world renowned hotels have theirs up, as do a large majority of townhouses in a very rich, high society area of London I walked through today... so stick that in your class pipe and smoke it 😂

Rudgie47 · 27/11/2018 17:07

I've just got a 6 foot Easter Egg, fuck the tree and Christmas.

BlueJava · 27/11/2018 17:13

Not for me - we put our tree up 2nd weekend in December. However a lovely lady in our office put her tree up 1st week of November. I was surprised but she explained that her mum never let her have the tree up for long due to the mess so now she's in her own place she's having it up for 2 and half months! Good on her :)

Xmasfairy86 · 27/11/2018 17:19

I LOOOOOVE christmas. Will happily listen to Christmas tunes in shops from November. Shop for presents all year.

But trees go up in December. Not November.

joystir59 · 27/11/2018 17:20

They will be dusty and tired long before Christmas Day. I love the feeling of getting the house ready and clean and putting the tree up the week before Christmas. We don't put decs up, just a tree.

Udre · 27/11/2018 17:37

I grew up in in a country where cutting, bringing home and decorating christmas tree were a big part of Christmas celebration process. All the family shared a joy of preparing everything for the Chrismas eve and Christmas day. Nothing really happened earlier than a week before Christmas. The only problem is that in UK they stop selling real Christmas trees when I finally feel its time to get one. So,for the last 10+ years I am buying it at least 2 weeks early.

MrsDylanBlue · 27/11/2018 17:39

Just to make it clear - I did not say I found it offensive.

I said it’s irritating and the show boating on social media “look at how amazing and Christmassy we are, we will do our other five and they will be colour coordinated with the flags of the world etc”.

I did not say I am right and others are wrong - I said (in a thread on a chat forum where presumably difference of opinion and debate are allowed) that it’s not for me, I don’t get it, why on earth are people doing this?

I did not say in circumstances of death, dying and mental health that I have no empathy or understanding.

I love Christmas and HATE the fact that it starts so early. It ruins the excitement because it's diluted over such a long period.
Obviously people can decorate their home whenever and however they like, but seeing Christmas stuff in shops from September and people's trees up in November just makes me start to feel fed up with Christmas by the time it happens. Angry

WipsGlitter · 27/11/2018 17:55

This gives me the rage.

It's the commercialism but also the underlying message that Christmas is so amazing we have to anticipate it for over a month and do a million "making memories" type crappy activities.

Children need to learn about delayed gratification; we need to have more consistent things to look forward to than one day of the year that's increasingly based around spending money.

Aragog · 27/11/2018 18:03

It's way too early for me, but we do get a real tree so not sure it'd cope with being up 2-3 weeks longer. I definitely couldn't deal with it longer.

However re the commercialism link. The two people I know with trees up already are definitely not interested in the commercialism side of things. Neither are that way inclined at all; one is almost the exact opposite tbh. They just love Christmas as a celebration.

Each to their own. So long as I don't have to have mine up just yet!

anothernameagain000 · 27/11/2018 18:11

I had to put ours up as we are having a Christmas party during the day this coming weekend... am trying to retain the “it’s not really there” by not turning any of the lights on.

pheasant1 · 27/11/2018 18:27

As a kid my parents never got round to putting the decorations up until Christmas eve. It wasn't a tradition of ours or anything, just that they were never organised enough. It was horrible as a kid hearing all the other kids talk about their decorations and not being able to participate in the chatter.
November is too early for us though, we normally buy our tree the first weekend in December or there abouts and decorate some time in the first week.

CheeseTheDay · 27/11/2018 19:25

What I find ridiculous, is when people put their tree up so early, long before it's actually Christmas (and Christmas doesn't start until 25 December), and then take it down a day or two after Boxing Day, when it's still actually bloody Christmas. Christmas doesn't end until early January, you now, the twelve days of it and all that.

It's nonsense to me, to have a tree up when it's ages before Christmas, and take it down when it is actually Christmas.! Confused

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 27/11/2018 21:32

all very well to say 'who does it affect when I put up my tree' but it's part of an overall move towards making Christmas an ever lengthening, expensive and stressful time.

This.

PoesyCherish · 27/11/2018 21:36

all very well to say 'who does it affect when I put up my tree' but it's part of an overall move towards making Christmas an ever lengthening, expensive and stressful time.

Maybe it helps some of us deal with that stress though. I find the Christmas season so stressful due to difficult family relations. I'd rather just hide away and pretend it doesn't exist. But at least I smile every time I go in my living room and see my Christmas tree. I love all the lights and the smell and if it helps us bring a little bit of light into a difficult time of year then that can only be a good thing.

craftymum01 · 27/11/2018 21:56

My tree went up three weeks ago. Nothing anyone from the Christmas police can say will stop me putting it up when I want. I’d keep it up all year if my DH would let me as it makes the house look so lovely

RaisinRainbow · 27/11/2018 22:01

Our tree went up this evening, there is under a month to go til Christmas day and I enjoy the twinkly glow from the lights.

Moreover I enjoy the Christmas build-up in general. The evenings are quite long, dark and cold at this time of year and the tree really helps create a mood of cosiness and enjoyment of the darkness, if that makes sense.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 27/11/2018 22:04

So make your living room prettier. Nothing wrong with twinkly lights - I have them up in the garden all summer.

But pretending Christmas starts in November is probably why most people are feeling stressed by the whole idea. As someone said the whole frenzy in the shops has started already all filled with tat.
It's lovely going over to France and Spain in December. The contrast between our manic shops and relentless Christmas and their calm beautiful town centres is palatable.

Twistedinknots · 27/11/2018 22:11

I'm beginning to wonder if we should just call December Christmas month and just accepth that there are only 11 months in a year unblighted by xmas tat.

Btw I love xmas itself I just feel resentful about the special Christmas feeling being eroded by the shops starting it all off as early as possible.

I avoid all shops/radio until very close to xmas to preserve that special Christmassy feeling I had when I was a kid.

And it works for me!

OnNaturesCourse · 27/11/2018 22:12

I just put our tree up today, I've been putting decorations up here and there for a few days. It takes a full day to get my tree and lights up. We normally aim for December 1st but this was my only free day for a while. I love it. My livingroom genuinely feels cosier with all the twinkly lights and smells etc.

I love the warmth and magic of Christmas, I'm not into the expensive demands or the over the top stuff however. Traditional is best.

Each to their own. It's not like people are asking you to sit in their house and stare at it.

I should say... We haven't got any of outdoor lights up, they will definitely not be up until into December so my neighbours don't have my Christmas spirit shoved in their faces (they are elderly and one has recently lost their partner) In terms of these decorations, you have to be respectful.

Twistedinknots · 27/11/2018 22:16

So some people are trying to make Christmas last about eight weeks if they take things down twelfth night?
I can't see any magic in that.

JustAskingForAFriend · 27/11/2018 22:20

Mine went up tonight various reasons.

Brought all new this year and got sick of the boxes and bags everywhere. By putting it all up the empty boxes etc can be put in loft. And home is back to tidy.
Our next 3 weekends are jam packed with festive things so be nice to come home to the twinkly lights etc and feel christmassy.

I'm all done and wrapped.. Just cards to write. So I can now relax.. No stress here. No traipsing to shops in rain and cold with the baby.

And had the house to myself all night so gave me time to crack on without interference from anyone.

Normally I put them up around 5th Dec.

They will come down 2nd Jan.. Unless baby destroys it all before then lol

yorkshirepud44 · 27/11/2018 22:22

See I'm conflicted with this. I don't want mine up until well into December as I'll have a withered brown stick by Christmas Day but I'm really happy to see others going up.
Love twinkly lights and am always quite sad when they come down.
