Christmas Trees in November

What is this fresh hell?

People putting their trees up in November WTAF? Its another week until bloody December?!

I hate the bloody commercialism the bloody colour themes people moaning about putting one up and having another two to go (in their own home so entirely optional).

Why does this have to be another “thing”.

Bah humbug I say.

Once Advent has begun ... ok. Anything before, just chavvy.

Mind you my husband (age 57) says the tree should not go up before Christmas Eve. He says I'm chavvy.

Depends on your reference point!

CoachBombay · 25/11/2018 22:05

It's 12/14 days before Christmas that the tree and decorations go up in our house (depending how the weekends fall) and 12th night they come down. Always has been in our family.

I'm not a fan of Christmas in November seems to make it drag on too long in my opinion. 1st December is the start of that Christmas feeling for us.

5foot5 · 25/11/2018 22:25

I love Christmas and always have. But I really wouldn't like to decorate this early, it would somehow feel like devaluing Christmas itself and surely you get fed up of it before the day. Two weeks before is ample IMO.

There are plenty of other Christmas related activities to be doing in any case. Today was Stir-up Sunday so we made the pudding, cake and mincemeat. Next week I am going to the Christmas market at Chatsworth. Putting up the decs is part of the ritual but it isn't time for it yet.

Mind you there was an occasion when I have put up a tree in November. As students we wanted to do Christmas for a couple of weeks before we broke up and term ended in mid December. This meant putting everything up the last weekend in November. Only big trees were on sale that early (this was in early 1980s) so we ended up with a whopper. We had to use a waste paper bin to put it in with soil stolen from the park!

TheChickenOfTruth · 25/11/2018 22:34

1st December we put on the Christmas music and films and jumpers and hats and put up the tree. We take the day off if it's a weekday and go to a Christmas Market and drink mulled wine. It's awesome, best day of the year. Tree comes down New Years Day ready for the return to work on the 2nd.

Clothrabbit · 26/11/2018 10:15

Yes, this new trend for putting up trees and outside lights in November is bloody annoying.

Can we all please WAIT until December???? That way there's some chance of it all still being a novelty by the time Christmas Day arrives.

Sparklesocks · 26/11/2018 13:10

Each to their own, but it's too early for me - needs to be at least December.

I like to have a mulled wine/a baileys and put some xmas music on when we do it, and it just feels wrong to do that in November!

Also I have a group of friends who live all over the UK, for the first weekend in December we always meet up and stay at one of our houses – we take turns hosting each year – we drink mulled wine, watch a festive film and have a big catch up. Often we’ll go into whichever town we’re near and look at the lights. For me this is when the Christmas season kicks off, I couldn’t put my tree up before our annual gathering (which is on Saturday 😊).

5foot5 · 26/11/2018 13:30

Oh and apart from everything else I like to have a real tree and all the needles would surely drop off if we got one in November

Basecamp65 · 26/11/2018 13:48

It's not my thing but I cannot think of a single way that it hurts anyone.

I put my decorations up and take them down exactly when I want to and accept other people do as well.

stayathomer · 26/11/2018 13:50

Do you know something? Let them off. My best friend had a hellish year this year (health, a miscarriage and the death of two relations) and put hers up because it makes her smile. Sometimes people are just looking for some brightness in their lives-nothing to do with commercialism

Changingagain · 26/11/2018 13:59

We normally wait until December but we've just put the tree up this weekend. Ds was ill and it was a compromise for not being able to go out. I really can't see how it harms anyone.

Clothrabbit · 26/11/2018 14:21

I don't think anyone said it harms anyone. But as more and more people follow suit the whole excitement of Christmas becomes diluted and stretched out. So it does have a general effect.

KingsScorn · 26/11/2018 14:37

I used to put my tree up on Christmas eve and taking it down on boxing day. That then changed to the weekend before Christmas and then mid December (children and bigger house...didn't feel so cluttered). Never have it still up on NYD though.

Yesterday I decorated the mantelpiece - I shocked myself! Love it - looks lovely with the little lights in the garland...It goes against everything I've always said about decorations in November. No tree though - that can wait until 15th December, not least because I always feel like the house needs a deep clean first (that will take a while considering the current state).

Anyway, I don't care when other people put up their tree - although I will admit I used to be more judgy about November trees when I was younger. I think I used to be more judgy about a lot of things when I was younger though!

Highlandmary · 26/11/2018 14:46

Nah... it's tacky and ruins the magic of the actual season. I think anytime in December is fine but why November ffs? It's not even in the right month.

Loyaultemelie · 26/11/2018 14:55

MrsDylan two kittens means you have to put your tree up!
My cats love the tree this one climbs it the other eats it

Christmas Trees in November
megletthesecond · 26/11/2018 14:59

Ours won't go up until the 15th/16th. An early tree would drive me nuts.

I'm more excited that mini eggs will now be in production and on the shelves on Boxing day.

twattymctwatterson · 26/11/2018 15:25

Mine went up last night. Was told on another thread people put their trees up early because they're attention seeking and think that they're "doing Christmas" better than everyone else. Weird because I couldn't care less when other people put their tree up. I did it because I love Christmas and I have a five year old who does too. I also lost my mum this year and yesterday was her birthday so I wanted to cheer us up.

chillpizza · 26/11/2018 16:14

Ours does up end of November because winter is just so depressing and some pretty lights make me just that little bit happier.

I hate this time of year, we go from sun shine to colourful trees starting to drop leaves and fireworks then it’s just nothing but naked trees, cold grey skies and rain with darkness from 4pm until the Christmas decorations go up.

I tell dh I live on cave women time. Up with light, sleep in dark so winter I just want to hibernate basically.

southnownorth · 26/11/2018 16:19

Mine is up because I wanted it up.

I am also a chav.

Musmnet does make me Grin sometimes.

MamaLovesMango · 26/11/2018 16:22

I dot get it either. Surely the shine is taken off it by the time you get to Christmas and it’s just another bit of furniture in your room?!

My birthday is at the beginning of December and I like to see no trace of Christmas (bar an advent calendar) in our house until after then. By the fine the tree goes up, it’s still new and exciting with plenty of novelty by the 25th. It comes down before 5th January.

LagunaBubbles · 26/11/2018 16:23

Nah... it's tacky and ruins the magic of the actual season

Nope doesn't ruin anything for me or my family.

MrsWhiskersen · 26/11/2018 16:25

YABU.

And a misery guts.

And you try to cover up being a killjoy with “it’s lighthearted/it’s only a joke”.

FOTTFSOFATFOSM. HTH.

ButtMuncher · 26/11/2018 16:26

I can't do it before December - even though I think I probably would like to. I feel it would be blasphemy Grin

DSS's Mum has had hers (two of them) up since the first week in November Grin

Cupcakecafe · 26/11/2018 16:36

Someone I know shared a post on Facebook of someone who put their tree up mid October. It was up before halloween Shock

Personally, I do first weekend in December usually unless we are busy, then it's the weekend after. Never in November. I agree with a pp who said it dilutes it and spoils the magic of the season.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 26/11/2018 16:41

Do people really get this annoyed about decorations in other people's homes? I just can't get worked up about it. It's their home, if they want the tree up all year round they can and it doesn't affect anyone you or anyone else.

LagunaBubbles · 26/11/2018 16:41

Who does it "dilute and spoil the magic of the season" for? Not the person with their tree up for sure, I love the build up and love having the decorations up. And why would having a tree up in your house "dilute and spoil" any magic for anyone else?
