AIBU TO DISLIKE PEOPLE WHO CALL CHILDREN 'KIDS'

Just that really. I just find it unpleasant and my DD7 corrects people she has heard on TV call children kids as she knows that 'kids' are baby goats.

OP posts:

Mum used to call us ‘the kids’. We would reply with goat like bleating.

luckylavender · 25/11/2018 10:00

Ideally dislike it too OP

explodingkitten · 25/11/2018 10:02

English is not my native language. I had no idea that it meant baby goats. I also don't see the problem tbh. Baby goats are pretty cute.

masterandmargarita · 25/11/2018 10:04

I call children kids, I call adults guys and I call women girls.

justtryingtodoitright · 25/11/2018 10:07

if you dislike people for using a wrong word how do you think about people who murder little children and rape?

Shit the bed, that escalated quickly.

anewyear · 25/11/2018 10:09

I know some one on Facebook who refers to her child as 'Kid' or
'this one', rarely by its actual name.

LunaLovegoodsRadishes · 25/11/2018 10:18

I work for London Underground. A mother was trying to get herself and her three "children" though a smaller gate meant for one person. I cheerily said, "Excuse me please? Bring the kids to the big gate, it'll be easier for you!" The woman looked genuinely shocked and as she went through the gate, said with menace, "They are not kids they are children." I was taken aback! I was only trying to stop her children from getting trapped, and she was horrible to me!

DarklyDreamingDexter · 25/11/2018 10:22

Just that really - isn't a complete sentence. It's a bit rich correcting people's use of language when you you start your post with that.
My DD7 corrects people - what a pompous -kid- child. Do you teach her to correct people or does she just get her low tolerance of other people from you subliminally?
Kids are indeed baby goats and it's also a term which has used to refer to human children for over 100 years. Maybe expand her knowledge by informing her that words often have multiple meanings rather than being proud of her priggish behaviour to adults?
In short, get over yourself OP and find something more important to find unpleasant.

corythatwas · 25/11/2018 10:30

Oh and am thinking of suing my children's infant school. "Infant" means somebody who hasn't yet learnt to speak (from in+ fari). Talk about low expectations- could have held them back for life!

beanaseireann · 25/11/2018 10:56

I hate the word kids used for the word children and very very rarely use it.
Aren't kids the offspring of goats?

You were kind. Some people are rude and obnoxious.

I often wonder what goes on in their brain when being an arse seems to be so important to them feeling good about themselves. What's wrong with a thank you?

Then again those people probably teach their children to be precocious and so the cycle continues.

Tutlefru · 25/11/2018 11:22

WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?

OhTheRoses · 25/11/2018 11:27

Oh, I've just realised your dd is 7. From your expression of DD7 I thought you had 7 dds. A whole herd in fact.

Bluesmartiesarebest · 25/11/2018 11:29

Sorry to butt in op - writing in capital letters is a baaaad idea around here. It really gets my goat but how do ewe feel now? Are ewe a bit of a silly-billy or will you continue to ram the point home? I think you’re just kidding us by bleating on about it.

OhTheRoses · 25/11/2018 11:30

I don't like the term. Used at the leisure centre, shops etc not a problem. Would I expect a paediatrician ir headteacher to use it, probably not but that's more about me.

PsychedelicSheep · 25/11/2018 12:10

YWNBU to dislike when people using the word.

YA definitely BU to dislike people for it. God what a thing to get het up about Hmm

And yes your DD does sound a bit sanctimonious, although not her fault obviously.

ImpendingDisaster · 25/11/2018 12:14

I use it all the time, I find 'children' excessively formal.

Everyones's got their bug bear, I find it terribly irritating when people use the term 'female' or male' when it's a known species (human) of a known age.

cadburysflake · 25/11/2018 12:17

I call my children "the kids" shock horror! I reeeeally hate it when people refer to their kids as "the boys" or "the girls" I have one of each but it really irritates me when my friends do this, I have no idea why? It's even more annoying when their parent's are still referring to them as "the boys" when they are in their 30s!!!

Your daughter sounds like a brat correcting adults though.

OhTheRoses · 25/11/2018 13:03

DH used to call ours the chimps. Still does occasionally and they're 23 and 20. Chidlers was another. Occasionally I called them little shit 1 and little shit 2.

Whereisthecoffee · 25/11/2018 13:08

Your daughter sounds hard work.

GabriellaMontez · 25/11/2018 13:12

I use the term 'animal's' for mine.

What do you say when your daughter wrongly corrects adults?

AiryFairyUnicornRainbow · 25/11/2018 13:14

YABU. To dislike a persons entire persona because YOU don't like one single word they use

The problem is yours OP
