AIBU TO DISLIKE PEOPLE WHO CALL CHILDREN 'KIDS'

Just that really. I just find it unpleasant and my DD7 corrects people she has heard on TV call children kids as she knows that 'kids' are baby goats.

OP posts:
Monty27 · 25/11/2018 02:42

I cannot bear shouting. It negates anything a shouty person says.
Just shout at the kids. We're adults on here.

1forAll74 · 25/11/2018 02:43

OH dear, I tend to call other people's children kids, but never did I say it about my own two children many many many years ago. But it's just a saying really, always has been in the UK. Little goat kids are cute anyway.

LoudJazzHands · 25/11/2018 02:44

I don't mind children being referred to as kids but I don't like one child being referred to as a kid e.g. "When we have a kid".

Not logical I know.

ElizabethMainwaring · 25/11/2018 02:45

DD7 is correcting people on the TV, apparently.

Stompythedinosaur · 25/11/2018 02:47

I cannot believe that anyone objects to such a common usage of a word.

Kids is pretty harmless.

Sparklesocks · 25/11/2018 02:47

I really have never thought about it in any way! Doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

FeralBeryl · 25/11/2018 02:48

I find it interesting that in the uk we say kids but rarely 'kid' for one child. Is it more an American thing? I'm going to pick my kid up. My kid eats those etc.
It sounds weird to me but throw an S on the end and I'm fine...

Shinesweetfreedom · 25/11/2018 02:49

I would be highly fucking incensed if someone dared took me to task for calling my daughter my kid.She is my kid now and for ever more.
MY KID.

LoudJazzHands · 25/11/2018 02:50

LOL Beryl

When I lived in the ME I used to find Indian would use "kid" a lot but not so much by other nationalities.

HeebieJeebies456 · 25/11/2018 02:50

my DD7 corrects people

Great - another self-important brat.

7salmonswimming · 25/11/2018 02:52

YES YABU TO DISLIKE A PERSON just because they use “kid” instead of “child”. I reckon there are some pretty decent people in the world who use “kid”.

FeralBeryl · 25/11/2018 02:54

@LoudJazzHands Grin just seen your post! * links arms

TheBeastInMsRooneysRoom · 25/11/2018 02:57

It's just a viewpoint people trot out to try and feel superior. As a previous poster pointed out the usage is over 150 years old. You aren't exactly holding back the flood of commoners developing slang. You also aren't the intellectual, social or moral superior of those who use it.

TheRollingCrone · 25/11/2018 02:59

No but I cringe at 'bubs' 'lil man' - but really who cares?

ChristmasSprite · 25/11/2018 03:00

Y A B V U!!

Monty27 · 25/11/2018 03:01

Just as long as you haven't named them Billy and are a bit gruff yourself 😂

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 25/11/2018 03:02

YABU.
NO NEED TO SHOUT.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 25/11/2018 03:03

Feral - not sure about the USA but it's VERY usual usage in Australia - even the teachers talk about the kids at school. They'd find it laughable if someone picked up on it.

echt · 25/11/2018 03:04

Why are you allowing your child to believe she is in some way superior to adults just because of the language they use

The OP's child is talking to the TV, not correcting people in RL.
How does correcting language translate into belief in superiority?
Why does the correcting of adults (on TV) become not-OK? Are all adults right?

ChristmasSprite · 25/11/2018 03:04

Yes indeed Monty
Nice one thumb

ElizabethMainwaring · 25/11/2018 03:06

Teachers routinely say kids in the UK too. Op would be horrified. Ditto DD7. Perhaps she could have a word...

TheBeastInMsRooneysRoom · 25/11/2018 03:07

How does correcting language translate into belief in superiority?

The 'correcting' implies they are wrong and her DD correct. Which is not true. It's a common and well understood usage.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 25/11/2018 03:08

You seem a little shouty OP. What's the matter? Problems with the nanny?

Topseyt · 25/11/2018 03:08

I couldn't give a shit really. It didn't bother me when I was a kid and it didn't bother me when I had kids of my own.

Oh, and STOP BLOODY SHOUTING!! People don't appreciate it.

Kids is a perfectly good slang term. It is a word with more than one meaning - kid as in child, kid as in baby goat, kid as in joke/tease (are you kidding).

TheDowagerCuntess · 25/11/2018 03:11

The word 'kid' is a homograph, OP.

They're fairly common in the English language, and not at all a challenging concept to get your head around....
