Why are only some foods deemed acceptable for breakfast

Shedpod · 24/11/2018 22:13

Why are pork and fish in various forms normal for breakfast when chicken or lamb would be viewed as odd by most people (in the UK I mean)?

Also why are things like leftover curry/pizza/Chinese so good for breakfast? I also happen to think chocolate tastes its best if it’s the first thing you’ve eaten that day.

But please don’t get me started on ‘breakfast biscuits’ Hmm

What’s your favourite breakfast? Is it something unacceptable?

I’m not a fan of cereal but I only have breakfast food for breakfast, scrambled eggs on toast, a pastry or porridge are my favourites.

I’ve never had any leftovers or non-breakfast stuff though so maybe I should give it a try!

Toomanycats99 · 25/11/2018 07:54

My daughters are like this. They like plain boiled pasta with a bit of olive oil mixed in. Maybe some greated cheese for the youngest.

I feel wierd saying that's what they have but neither like cereal or toast. They may have muffins or pancakes but only slathered in chocolate sauce so sure this is a healthier option!

n0ne · 25/11/2018 07:56

My favourite breakfast is corned beef hash with a fried runny egg on top, or the traditional breakfast of my mum's home country, fried salt cod with loads of onions and spices served with fried dumplings (and fried plantain if you're going all out). Yuuuuuum.

whiteroseredrose · 25/11/2018 08:02

Yuk yuk yuk! I'm so conditioned that I couldn't contemplate leftovers for breakfast. Lunch yes, but on a sleepy stomach? No way.

Toast or pastries, fruit, oj, coffee.

LizzieSiddal · 25/11/2018 08:04

Same here white. I’m 52 and have never eaten leftovers for breakfast. The thought of a cold pizza or curry turns my stomach!

Sallygoroundthemoon · 25/11/2018 08:07

I eat whatever I have here and whatever I fancy. I hate cereal and milk makes me heave so breakfast could be hummus with tomatoes and bread, eggs, left over curry/noodles or anything really. This morning, I've just had a cup of tea and shortbread in bed. Delicious Smile.

MrsJBaptiste · 25/11/2018 08:12

I have scrambled eggs most days but do jazz it up sometimes with crispy bacon or salmon.

I'd love to have cereal instead (crappy cereal though so sugar puffs, coco pops, crunchy nut cornflakes, etc.) or a bagel. I love a seeded bagel lathered in butter with honey dropping off...

Bloody starving now!!!

malificent7 · 25/11/2018 08:19

Vereal is better with warm milk. Cornflakes with warm milk smells incredible and tastes good too.
I normally have youghurt and fruit or overnight oats but if weight wasnt an issue id have toast with butter, peanut butter, jam and mashed banana every day!

malificent7 · 25/11/2018 08:20

Cereal even. I also love the Spanish toast with olive oil and mashed tomatoe...heaven.

Inertia · 25/11/2018 08:24

But if you eat all your leftovers for breakfast what are you going to have for lunch Grin ?

I am clearly the lone voice speaking out in favour of hot buttery crumpets, toast with marmalade, homemade muesli with Greek yogurt and fresh raspberries , poached eggs on sourdough with brown sauce, fried mushrooms and tomatoes in a soft roll...

crispsmonster · 25/11/2018 08:44

My mil sticks to all these "rules". And would make me feel like a cretin if I ever dare to eat something like curry for breakfast (at her house). I once made a cheese and ham omelette but then decided to put it in slices of bread and eat like a sandwich. She almost passed out.

CharltonLido73 · 25/11/2018 08:48

This thread caught my eye just as I was finishing a Tunnock's teacake for breakfast.
Blush

LakieLady · 25/11/2018 08:49

Yesterday I microwaved leftover fish pie for breakfast. Blush

CharltonLido73 · 25/11/2018 08:52

Whilst on a cycling holiday along the Danube, we stayed at a lovely waterside hotel where you could, if you wished - and from an extensive buffet, help yourself to blackforest gateau and prosecco for breakfast.

JustDanceAddict · 25/11/2018 08:52

I’m Not a big cereal fan but I like porridge in the winter.
In summer I’ll have yogurt and fruits.
Sometimes egg and toast if I have time.
Don’t like too much first thing so easy to eat foods like cereals have appeal for that reason. My kids love cereal!

The thought of fish or meat first thing is gross to me!!

JingsMahBucket · 25/11/2018 08:55

I was also taught to just whatever for breakfast. Food is food. In winter and autumn I'll often have soup for breakfast.

@n0ne is/was your mum, West African, West Indian or Brazilian?

quirkychick · 25/11/2018 09:04

I'm not great at breakfast, so tend to eat it almost at lunchtime, so it's whatever. I never liked cereal much, but did used to eat porridge. I now low carb, so it could be scrambled eggs, leftovers, soup or salad plus something in summer. Yesterday, we went out for dd's birthday, so my "breakfast" was chinese Grin. Traditional breakfast foods like eggs, kippers, bacon with tomatoes, mushrooms etc. at least set people up with filling food for the day.

NoLeslie · 25/11/2018 09:07

I'm not a morning person and hate breakfast but agree with those who have already mentioned TRIFLE as the only nice breakfast.

n0ne · 25/11/2018 09:11

@JingsMahBucket West Indian! Good spot. There's also a smoked herring option but it's always full of roe which puts me off. Served with 'cocoa tea' (hot chocolates, basically).

How did you know?

sashh · 25/11/2018 09:45

It's the time factor probably - someone has to get up and cook the bacon eggs and black pud for 4. Easier to put out the cereal and leave them to it.

Another use for a slow cooker.

bsbabas · 25/11/2018 10:32

Toasted broiche or panetonne and coffee

JingsMahBucket · 25/11/2018 10:33

@n0ne my mum was from the West Indies and my dad was from West Africa so I grew up eating similarly. :) Most of the food you mentioned is from the African diaspora. You have me hankering for salt fish now.

Perfectpanda11 · 25/11/2018 19:57

I love curry or noodles for breakfast. Only tend to have it when abroad though.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 25/11/2018 20:00

I can’t eat until around 10am but then I find a warm samosa to be a splendid start to the day. Every Boxing Day starts with Christmas pudding

Busybusybust · 25/11/2018 20:06

Don’t see the point in cereal - put something crispy in a bowl and cover it with mike to make it soggy? Why!

I’ve only learned to eat breakfast since I retired (egg on toast usually), but my kids like stuff like fried onion, pepper and garlic topped with a fried egg and hot chilli sauce - ooooo nooooo that’s soooo wrong!
