Why are only some foods deemed acceptable for breakfast

Why are pork and fish in various forms normal for breakfast when chicken or lamb would be viewed as odd by most people (in the UK I mean)?

Also why are things like leftover curry/pizza/Chinese so good for breakfast? I also happen to think chocolate tastes its best if it’s the first thing you’ve eaten that day.

But please don’t get me started on ‘breakfast biscuits’ Hmm

What’s your favourite breakfast? Is it something unacceptable?

I couldn't stomach something heavy for breakfast. Usually I have nothing and eat my first meal at midday then I ear what I like. Cereal isn't something I've ever eaten as i hate milk (all varieties).

Bombaybunty · 25/11/2018 00:41

Left over trifle is the best breakfast ever.

OccasionallyIncomplet · 25/11/2018 00:53

I regularly work in Asia. 'Standard' breakfast there might be noodles, chicken, soup or rice. Cereals there only really exist for Westerners. The 'Western' world has a great deal to learn about eating right and eating healthy in the mornings.

Ceilingrose · 25/11/2018 01:06

I used to love leftovers for breakfast, but. They just add weight with me. I usually have eggs and tomatoes, or porridge or muesli and fruit, yogurt and fruit or toast and peanut/almond butter.

Dawsonforehead · 25/11/2018 06:01

I love any eggs for breakfast. Or cheese on toast or potato cakes, crumpets, anything starchy. Not had continental breakfast at home but a while but lovely fresh bread or those crusty rolls that go in the oven with favourite cold meats and cheeses is so comforting!

My guess would be that traditionally meat was expensive and may only have been eaten a few times a week, do saved for a roast maybe? It would have been very extravagant to eat it for breakfast?

Actually, I just googled it and came up with this, which is fascinating!

I love proper meals for breakfast. I get up very early in the winter.

Chocolatebourbons · 25/11/2018 06:37

Chocolate Mousse Grin

I've never understood the breakfast cereal obsession. I tend to eat whatever I fancy for breakfast yesterday it was a brunch of veggie burger and beans then an apple.

Birdsgottafly · 25/11/2018 06:43

My DD used to like just bacon, or sausage and all of my work colleagues thought she was odd.

I had to change my thinking to lose weight, carbs don't fill me. So I would happily have similar to what many in Asia have. There's been times when I've had chunky veg soup, or stew.

I've started eating fish again (I was Vegan) and live a fish finger with Ketchup sandwich of a morning.

We eat as we do because of marketing.

sashh · 25/11/2018 06:48

a few years ago we established a new tradition of having Nasi Goreng for brunch

My favorite breakfast. Discovered in Bali, the Aussies I was with ate from the buffet for western tourists. I looked at limp bacon that seemed to be hours old and ordered from the menu.

I don't like milk and it doesn't like me so I don't do cereal, I have a box in for my dad's visits.

Depending on if I'm working and my health I have been known to have kedgeree, cheeses toasties, hard boiled eggs with cheese and ham, bread butter and bovril, fruit or pancakes.

Oh and of course cold Yorkshire pudding with syrup. Obviously not on the same day or plate.

IDismyname · 25/11/2018 06:51

I did once have a traditional Japanese breakfast. I’d normally eat most things, but the fish and pickled daikon was just a step too far for me that morning.

I love love black pudding. With an egg on top. Never been a cereal fan.

Vivaldi1678 · 25/11/2018 06:54

Some chocolate and two black coffees upon rising, a piece of cheese an hour later, maybe with a few tomatoes and a small pitta bread if I am feeling hungry. I hate cereal, disgusting stuff - I may as well get the sugar from the chocolate.

If on holiday and traditional breakfast on tap I may be tempted by bacon and baked beans or a hard boiled egg, but I couldn't eat them everyday.

brizzledrizzle · 25/11/2018 06:55

My breakfast, when I get round to it, is going to be chinese egg noodle soup.

LellyMcKelly · 25/11/2018 07:05

I love a bowl of Heinz tomato soup for breakfast in winter.

TimeToRevolutionize · 25/11/2018 07:13

Oh my god leftover Chinese for breakfast Grin delish!

Tadda · 25/11/2018 07:19

I very rarely eat a breakfast -but DH loves full cooked if we're out early- over the past three years ive slowly graduated to stealing his entire breakfast....it started with a mushroom....

He knows the score now - doesnt even ask just orders two....with extra mushrooms... (but have been pregnant for pretty much two years so my eating habits completely gone to the dark side.....Greggs now seems to have developed some sort of golden glow and harp music.....weird.....)

MothershipG · 25/11/2018 07:22

But Toast!!! Toast is the food of the gods!

Ideally my homemade sourdough with homemade jam but actually any half decent bread because Toast is the best thing ever!

I've been low carbing for a couple of years and I miss Toast sooooooo much. 😔

Cereal - not so much, other than our family tradition of a bowl of coco pops at Christmas.

But let's face it cereal is much more about convenience than anything else, 20 seconds to make and 2 minutes to eat. Most people would prefer to stay in bed longer than make and eat a better breakfast.

ivykaty44 · 25/11/2018 07:26

I love soaked oats and fruit ( summer or winter berries) with yogurt is my favourite

Silkie2 · 25/11/2018 07:31

It's the time factor probably - someone has to get up and cook the bacon eggs and black pud for 4. Easier to put out the cereal and leave them to it.
Maybe we need a savoury cereal. So crispy pre cooked bread soaked in egg and bits of bacon. Then just heat it in the microwave. Hmmm maybe I could freeze some of that. I love savoury breakfast but am hungry when I get up and want something now!

Wilhelminawonka · 25/11/2018 07:34

You are my people. Breakfast in the most boring meal of the day if you do the toast / cereal thing.
We have veg fritters, devon cream teas, ham croissants, leftovers...whatever seems good. The kids see cereals as a treat. Having lentil soup this morning (me) and porridge (kids)
I love the idea of rice pudding as breakfast. Hungry now

Orangeyouglad · 25/11/2018 07:36

I have found my people ! I rarely have breakfast but when I do it’s left overs, I often order extra from the Chinese or pizza place just for tomorrow’s breakfast

StripySocksAndDocs · 25/11/2018 07:44

Breakfast time is my favourite time to eat. Happily eat a 'Sunday roast' for breakfast, though obviously time makes this unlikely! I can eat breakfast and be done meal-wise for the whole day.

(I'm probably a morning person.)

ivykaty44 · 25/11/2018 07:49

Soup is good, easy to heat up in the microwave

VickieCherry · 25/11/2018 07:50

I think it's more that there isn't time to make a proper meal before going to work, so cereal and toast are three default because they're quick.

I'm not keen on cereal and don't often fancy something hot, so usually have a sandwich. Cheese and pickle is very common - I'm amused by a pp saying they felt wild for having one!

Leftover pizza is the best breakfast though, by far.
