Why are only some foods deemed acceptable for breakfast

Why are pork and fish in various forms normal for breakfast when chicken or lamb would be viewed as odd by most people (in the UK I mean)?

Also why are things like leftover curry/pizza/Chinese so good for breakfast? I also happen to think chocolate tastes its best if it’s the first thing you’ve eaten that day.

But please don’t get me started on ‘breakfast biscuits’ Hmm

What’s your favourite breakfast? Is it something unacceptable?

Really stodgy pudding. Like some kind of upside down fruit sponge and custard.

Can't stomach it after a big roast but love it the next morning.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 24/11/2018 22:36

Mince pies 😊

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 24/11/2018 22:36

Other countries don't have the same weird rules we do. In Thailand I've had noodles for breakfast and Vietnam noodle soup

Rumandra1sin1cecream · 24/11/2018 22:38

I've seen some weird food on my travels for breakfast, so it depends what country you are in. I like hot rice pudding in the winter instead of porridge.

Llanali · 24/11/2018 22:38

I don’t know- I spent much time in the Far East as a child. Coconut rice and mild curry is the best breakfast. Also a good roti....

I suppose we are institutionalised/conditioned towards cereals and bakery products. I do love a good porridge with fruit in.....

shouting · 24/11/2018 22:39

shedpod I usually have porridge, and my DH jokes that I make it so thick you could cut it with an knife. So no big bowl of milk in my case. I don't like most processed cereals now, but did when I was younger.

Doyoumind · 24/11/2018 22:39

The other thing about breakfast is how many people eat pretty much exactly the same thing every day but you generally don't for other meals.

Bunchofdaffodils · 24/11/2018 22:40

I LOVE cereal! There’s so much variety, I’m sure I could eat it at every meal for s weekbefore I got fed up. Muesli, shredded wheat with hot milk, honey nut cornflakes, wheatos, rice crispies with banana, porridge, bran flakes with raisins, nutty Granolas and do many different milks to mix it up.
Sorry I got carried away there.
Yes to bacon roll but no to tuna, is is strange, agree. And vegetables, how come only mushrooms and tomatoes get a look in?

JustAskingForAFriend · 24/11/2018 22:40

Agreed choc is best 1st thing in the morning.. Or some biscuits..
But to be honest I do rarely have breakfast

ShesABelter · 24/11/2018 22:40

@FourFoxCakes LOVE Cinnamon

Athena51 · 24/11/2018 22:41

To be honest my favourite breakfast is either overnight oats or French toast with berries but my grown up DS and I always spend Boxing day together and a few years ago we established a new tradition of having Nasi Goreng for brunch (made with leftover turkey of course).

It's delicious Smile

Defo true for me. I love variety in my diet, just not at breakfast Grin

@Athena51

I love this!! But It would be a toss up between currying the turkey and making Nasi Lemak...

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/11/2018 22:44

It's like you wouldn't have a slice of fruitcake for breakfast Well, I usually have Christmas cake for breakfast.

LizzieSiddal · 24/11/2018 22:44

I hate cereal of any kind. I either have poached egg on toast, if I’m hungry. If not I just have a bit of yogurt and some fruit.

I agree that the British tendency towards cereals is utterly weird and not usually very healthy.

Gushpanka · 24/11/2018 22:47

When we were in SE Asia, we loved chicken congee, nasi lemak (rice and chicken), noodle soup etc for breakfast. Dh stuck to western 'rules' and had limp cornflakes with uht milk or tasteless toast. Me and the kids loved our breakfasts!

SgtFredColon · 24/11/2018 22:47

Closer have you seen this? Irish deli counters do offer hope!

DahliaDiver · 24/11/2018 22:47

I only eat breakfast if there is cold pizza in the fridge 😋

EustaciaPieface · 24/11/2018 22:48

I remember going to an enormous international hotel in Moscow when I was young and they catered for every nationality. It was fascinating to see how all the different nationalities approached breakfast - everything from full English, to bread and cheese, spicy curries to delicate cakes. It all tasted amazing!

WeirdHandDryers · 24/11/2018 22:48

Oh in Thailand it’s perfectly normal to have curried noodles for breakfast. I thought I was in heaven

Athena51 · 24/11/2018 22:49

@Llanali

Nasi Lemak

I love rice and noodles for breakfast, or any time actually [smiles]

oohyoudevilyou · 24/11/2018 22:50

Best ever breakfast is leftover trifle that has slid together and made a delightful creamy, jelloid slippery mess. I enjoy this breakfast every year on December 27th after our annual family-over-for-Boxing-Day buffet tea Grin

Fujexa · 24/11/2018 22:52

Rice crispie bun mixture eaten right after you've stirred in all the melted chocolate, while it's all still warm and melty....mmmmmmm haven't had this in years... definitely trying in the morning

JudasPrudy · 24/11/2018 22:53

Why is everyone getting on their high horse about cereal? Not everyone wants poached eggs and avocado on toast Envy

Gushpanka · 24/11/2018 22:54

We also loved the hummus, favas beans, falafel, salad and olives breakfasts in the mid east. Delicious!
