Ridiculous asking prices for second hand stuff

Just wanting a rant really. So many times I see on FB people selling their old shit for ridiculous money.

Someone was selling a christmas jumper for £8. You can get them new for that!

Someone else selling 2 packs of straws for £1.50.

Another person was selling some disney books (really old, probably new when I was a kid in the 80's) and she wanted £10!!

Does anyone every buy this overpriced stuff?!

Yes this never fails to make me laugh. Some people seem to think that if something cost them £10, they should get the same when they sell it on. Surely they must end up disappointed?

BeckyQuickSharp · 21/11/2018 19:39

Oh god yes! Someone is currently trying to flog a manky old rug for 50 quid on fb. I happen to know for a fact that said rug cost 40 from John Lewis.

I’d probably buy it off her if she was struggling financially but she is definitely not short of a bob or two. Just thinks everyone else is as daft as a brush.

Zoflorabore · 21/11/2018 19:41

Why would you buy a manky old rug though? Confused

WerewolfNumber1 · 21/11/2018 19:43

Yes, I’ve even (politely) asked if they were flexible on price as it was cheaper new on Argos, with free delivery as well, and got the response “lol buy it from Argos then, I want back what I paid for it!”. People don’t seem to understand that it’s only worth what somebody will pay.

jarhead123 · 21/11/2018 19:45

@JudasPrudy I agree, they must be disappointed no one ever buys their stuff! I sometimes have to bite my tongue, I want to tell them they are being daft asking for so much money!

I don’t think some people realise that as soon as you get something home from a shop, it loses most of its value.

SingaporeSlinky · 21/11/2018 19:51

I saw someone last week selling a used Lego set for 50 and said it cost 150 new. A quick google revealed the original price was actually 50. Unbelievable how cheeky some people can be.

SandysMam · 21/11/2018 19:54

I feel the same about Charity shops. Ridiculously expensive, I seriously don’t get it.

BlueRose28 · 21/11/2018 19:56

I understand if the item was never ever used and not far off the retail price, but obviously used stuff for the same price is ridiculous. I sold a bag of baby clothes worth £60 brand new for £40. The clothes had never been worn and was still in the same bag I purchased it in and with a receipt. All items were tagged. A woman told me I was selling far too much and I should knock a further £20 off the asking price to be reasonable. This same woman sold a small fridge freezer with a missing drawer from the freezer section, dirty inside and out with the buyer to clean. She sold this exactly £25 short from the asking price

BlueRose28 · 21/11/2018 19:57

I was selling it for far too much**

BlueRose28 · 21/11/2018 19:58

Ugh she sold it for £25 short from the retail price

Can you tell I'm very, very sleep deprived?

Scallywag1903 · 21/11/2018 20:00

I always think why should I pay more than half for a second hand object - any more then the seller would theoretically have use of the brand new item less than I would second hand! So nope - third of retail is fair I think! IYSWIM

Fannyfanakerpants · 21/11/2018 20:00

I agree with the charity shop. I understand they need to make a profit and it's a good cause but a bobbly, faded, Primark cardi isn't worth £5.

BeckyQuickSharp · 21/11/2018 20:01

@Zoflorabore

I meant that if she was struggling financially then I’d probably buy it to help her out. Not because I want a manky old rug!

Worieddd · 21/11/2018 20:02

Agree

Soubriquet · 21/11/2018 20:02

I sold a bulk load of pj masks stuff about a month ago for £50. Well worth it as it included about 30 items including cars and the headquarters.

They were snapped up quickly. I then found a post by the woman selling them individually at stupid prices. She’s still struggling to sell them now Grin. Serves her right

jarhead123 · 21/11/2018 20:10

This is a good example. She was asking for £15!

Jeez...I would pay about £3 for that Hmm

ChikiTIKI · 21/11/2018 20:14

Yes I see this loads!! I was complaining to my husband about it the other day.

My theory might not be to everyone's tastes however... On a Facebook page for a nearby expensive place to live, people are always selling old stuff and wanting loads for it. Where I live though, you can get the same kind of stuff in a charity shop for far far less.

Just my opinion but I think some middle class people think their stuff is worth way more than it is. They seem a lot less willing to give stuff away or reduce prices. They would rather just keep it if they can't get the money they're asking for. Just what I've seen obviously some wealthy people are very generous and just give things away once finished with them so I am not saying everyone is like that.

UnalliterativeGeorge · 21/11/2018 20:16

This makes me laugh and so do the people who don't bother taking a photo of the item and just screenshot it from Argos or wherever.
Somebody on my local FB is trying to sell a tub of Lego with only a picture of the tub and no pictures actually showing any Lego!

EssentialHummus · 21/11/2018 20:17

On a Facebook page for a nearby expensive place to live, people are always selling old stuff and wanting loads for it.

Same here! I always giggle - on their FB page it'll be a bundle of 5 used baby tops for £15; over here it's £1 each or (more typically) "I've left them outside number 2 Elm Street, help yourselves!".

KitKat1985 · 21/11/2018 20:18

It's the phrase "I just want what I paid for it" that cracks me up. Why would I buy it second hand with no security of having a receipt etc, for the same price as buying it second hand?

I once saw someone trying to sell a £10 discount voucher for a theme park on a Facebook site for £10.... Bargain that.....

Betsy86 · 21/11/2018 20:19

Lol £15!! I have recently been aellin a few bits off and although a couple of things have been painful to sell off cheaply as they were fab condition and i had to tell myself it has served its purpose in my house and getting something back for it and it being enjoyed by a new family was worth it.
Luckily both people who came to collect those items were lovely and i was pleased to be selling the items to them!
People that ask crazy prices especially for items that are falling apart!
What annoys me most is people who arrange to collect and dont bother to show up but that’s a whole new thread Angry xx

KitKat1985 · 21/11/2018 20:20

^ 'for the same price as buying it new' I mean.

Ofitck · 21/11/2018 20:21

I live in Spain and they’re terrible for this. 10 year old Ikea stuff for €5 less than rrp.

I had to block someone on FB marketplace after they listed the shitest condition armchair ever for €0 - I want to learn upholstery so eagerly messaged yes please! The guy was like “great, make me an offer, no less than €600” - when I politely explained I thought it was free so no thank you, he sent a barrage of abuse!
