Ridiculous asking prices for second hand stuff

jarhead123 · 21/11/2018 19:30

Just wanting a rant really. So many times I see on FB people selling their old shit for ridiculous money.

Someone was selling a christmas jumper for £8. You can get them new for that!

Someone else selling 2 packs of straws for £1.50.

Another person was selling some disney books (really old, probably new when I was a kid in the 80's) and she wanted £10!!

Does anyone every buy this overpriced stuff?!

I have a friend who does this... sells her kids stuff ie. "Ted baker coat, well worn. £30 cost £40 new".
Surprisingly she never sells any of it! I sell huge bundles of good quality clothes that my kids outgrow for a max of £10 a bundle. They are always sold on fb market place within 24 hours

Ploverlover · 21/11/2018 21:07

Equally annoying are people who "win" something previously expensive, used, and described, on eBay, for 50p, and complain it's not pristine.

I suspect there is some overlap there.

CantWaitToRetire · 21/11/2018 21:08

I think some people over inflate their prices because they know they will be haggled down. Even when I’ve put stuff up ridiculously cheaply someone comes along to offer peanuts for it. Some people just want something for nothing.

AjasLipstick · 21/11/2018 21:09

Oh my local printers did this! had a big table full of toys and kids books....sign said "Ask about prices" so I took a book to the counter and he said "I dunno.....eight pounds?"

HA!

EIGHT POUNDS!

It would be 50p in the charity shop!

Georgeofthejungle · 21/11/2018 21:09

There is a second hand shop in my home town that puts crazy prices on things. Someone I know bought (i shit you not) a stars and moons covered navy blue cord 3 piece suit for £250!! The thing was battered and sunk and can only imagine how it would have been with that dodgy design. Thank Christ it didn’t fit in their front door. I don’t know what they were thinking.

Georgeofthejungle · 21/11/2018 21:10

*how old it would have been

Georgeofthejungle · 21/11/2018 21:11

Or when the second hand shop is selling supermarket or primark clothes for more then they’d cost in the actual shop!

Hushnownobodycares · 21/11/2018 21:11

From this thread I'm guessing there are plenty that live in hope that the 'fools and their money' theory has legs Grin

Justchillalready · 21/11/2018 21:13

I have a faded pink jumper for sale if anyone's interested. A little worn with a couple of moth holes near the underarm.
£14.25.

Kidding! Smile

Agree with you all!

A580Hojas · 21/11/2018 21:15

Yanbu, but I ignore the ridiculously priced stuff and try not to let it ruffle me.

I sold a complete Brio set with all the pristine boxes and lots of extra trains and extra track for £20 all in last Christmas. I hope that was ok.

I bought a lovely solid unvarnished pine 6 drawer chest of drawers last year for £40.00. I could maybe have got some MDF abomination in Argos for the same price but sometimes you buy things for the quality not the price?

LisaSimpsonsbff · 21/11/2018 21:16

This is my favourite such generous offer of all time, though - a baby bouncer that has 'never been used except to sit baby in'. What did they think all the others had been used for?! (Sorry for crappy picture, it's a screenshot of a screenshot)

Renarde1975 · 21/11/2018 21:19

I too have wondered about this recently! One that particularly made me laugh was something like 'watch straps £1 each or five for a fiver'. That's not how it works!

Or two, fake potted plants (used) for a fiver. I boggled at that one.

Who on earth has time for this? Give it to charity and do a good deed!

InvisibleToEveryone · 21/11/2018 21:23

I had a slight "disagreement" with someone on a FB selling page just the other week.

They were selling baby car seats.

First I saw up was a maclaren first seat.....brand new and perfect condition apparently, for £39......it was at least 20 years old if not more.

Told her it was irresponsible to be selling a 20+ year old car seat.
She argued back.

Then the next one was an identical seat that I used for one of my DC who is 22 yo!

PatchworkElmer · 21/11/2018 21:26

One of my friends has been doing this recently- £30 for a used bridesmaids dress, etc. Trying to sell baby clothes for 2/3rds of the retail value.

I sell stuff at car boot prices to shift it. Kids clothes are in bundles and I work it on 50p per good quality item. Usually sells very quickly.

TurquoiseDress · 21/11/2018 21:27

YANBU!

I take a look at the FB stuff for sale just for a laugh Grin

Wordthe · 21/11/2018 21:28

I think I would wind them up
Id make out I assumed the asking price was what they would be willing to pay me for taking it away😁

MysticFlyTrap · 21/11/2018 21:28

I can completely agree, I have seen it all. My favourite is clearly over used kids t shirts for a tenner! And I bet your bottom dollar no one buys this crap.

SisterOfDonFrancisco · 21/11/2018 21:29

Some people buy everything new thinking they can sell it off after use for same price. They then complain when nobody is willing pay full price for used goods.

TurquoiseDress · 21/11/2018 21:30

In general, I just give my stuff away to charity now.

I tried selling on ebay and the nearly new sales, but in the end it was a lot of work for not much gain.

Totally understand if money is tight and you need to make some money back on what you have already bought, but some of the stuff on FB is totally ridiculous.

Buyer beware indeed! Grin

Vixxxy · 21/11/2018 21:30

My cousin is awful for this. Recently, his lizard thing died and he doesn't plan on getting another one. The vivarium cost him 70 quid 3 years back. Hes been trying to sell as still decent condition, and someone offered him 50. But he says he will take no less than 70 (and seems to think its worth over 70 too and that he will get offers 100+) and actually thinks the person who offered 50 is taking the piss! Its just bizarre.

hibbledibble · 21/11/2018 21:32

Yes, sometimes people do this, but why get annoyed? More the fool them, for wasting their time listing it, when no one will buy it.

Also, some of the examples you give aren't that bad. £8 isn't bad for a second hand Christmas jumper, depending on the make. People would pay more than that for a second hand frugi jumper!

waxy1 · 21/11/2018 21:34

It ceases to be a problem, if you don’t buy it.

ChikiTIKI · 21/11/2018 21:39

I think the whole Facebook buying/selling thing is such a waste of time.

I've only ever listed things for free such as a desk, a tv, some expensive university textbooks...
I always get people interested and messaging me to arrange collection and then they almost never show up!
Similarly I have agreed to buy things off people and they have said things like "I will leave it in a bag in this specific place at the side of my house" and then I go and it's not there!

I don't buy or give away things on Facebook any more...

isseywithcats · 21/11/2018 21:42

It works the other way too when my DP and i moved in together we had two leather suites between us so decided to keep his one, i put mine on Fb selling page in good condition for free (was over £1000 when i bought it)and not one single person was interested in it ended up putting it on freecycle in the end

Wordthe · 21/11/2018 21:45

I guess people get confused because some things appreciate in value (eg houses, art) and they think that everything appreciates in value?
so he regarded the vivarium as an investment and he feels that it should be worth more than it was when he bought it?
