Ridiculous asking prices for second hand stuff

Just wanting a rant really. So many times I see on FB people selling their old shit for ridiculous money.

Someone was selling a christmas jumper for £8. You can get them new for that!

Someone else selling 2 packs of straws for £1.50.

Another person was selling some disney books (really old, probably new when I was a kid in the 80's) and she wanted £10!!

Does anyone every buy this overpriced stuff?!

Mybigmessyhair · 21/11/2018 20:22

Someone was selling chat and take a break magazines for £25 lol
Worst I’ve seen was someone selling irn bru for £25 for a couple of bottles.
Then there are ones who moan about their fake sky boxes not working and saying who they bought it off was a thief and scam artist
Couldn’t make it up

longestlurkerever · 21/11/2018 20:27

Someone was selling 4 used books for 8 quid the other day. You can buy a set of twelve of the same series for £16 new, and it comes with free delivery. Or if you're worried about your carbon footprint, the library lets you order any book for free. I almost posted "do you realise..." But I kind of figured it was none of my business if some mug pays it. It does feel mean spirited though. What happened to giving them to charity or the school fair?

ThePencil · 21/11/2018 20:28

Gosh, yes, this cracks me up! I've seen loads of toys for sale at 95% of the original price. I just don't understand why so many people list them so expensive... Obviously some people gave the time to hold out for the price they're asking, but loads of them say "having a pre-Christmas clear-out" and I'm thinking there is no way those things are going to sell at that price between now and Christmas!

2019bride2be · 21/11/2018 20:33

I feel the same when I see people selling wedding dresses.
"New unused, never lost weight in time so got a size up/Got pregnant so wedding cancelled/changed my mind, unable to take back/yada yada" a dress that costs 699, they want 599. Everyone wants a bargain, nobody will pay that price! I've even seen the same dress on eBay for 120! I just don't get it, if you have enough money to buy another dress and probably sell that one on too, WHY do you need to sell it for almost full price? Would love to find a bargain but it's too hard!

StripySocksAndDocs · 21/11/2018 20:34

There’s two charity shops down the road for me. over the years I’ve seen thing like each had a pair of doc Martin boots; one was selling them for €10, the other €100!! It’s the same with furniture. Solid wood table with six chairs €80 in one and €600 in the other (similar enough tables). Honestly I do think the second one is having a laugh every time I look in there.

TheChickenOfTruth · 21/11/2018 20:35

The opposite end of the spectrum is just as odd. Do you really need the 20p that much? Is this worth the effort?

MrMakersFartyParty · 21/11/2018 20:36

Im currently trying to sell my baby things, loads of good clothes, changing bags etc for a couple of quid and all I've had is cheeky mares asking me to deliver them all 25 minutes away. Infuriating!

Biancadelriosback · 21/11/2018 20:37

See I'm desperately looking for a chest of drawers at the moment but just can't afford to buy new. Went on eBay, shpok, Groupon, gumtree and Facebook and the cheapest one I can get is hardly cheaper then buying it new from IKEA!

OlennasWimple · 21/11/2018 20:38

It can be hard to sell something that you have bought in good faith but never used for less than you paid for it, though. It's something odd psychologically, that says "it's better not to sell it than to sell it at a loss"

I can't explain it, but I've found myself thinking it about some BNWT stuff that I've put on eBay and not sold for much. (Admittedly some of that is irritation at having to faff around with eBay, PayPal and the Post Office to make £1.50 - I'd rather donate to charity shops)

HereBeFuckery · 21/11/2018 20:41

Agree with all the above, and want to add: how annoying it is when the seller implies that they have done you/the marketplace/the world a favour by buying overpriced expensive stuff in the first place - that's what those 'cost me £40 new' comments mean.

I want to post childishly 'just cause you're a mug, and bought into the branding in the first place, that Joules coat still ain't worth £35, dearie' and run off.

fairygarden · 21/11/2018 20:44

Sylvainian family stuff is the worst. It's over priced anyway but second hand it is always unrealistically priced.

One woman posted a few sets and wanted £200!!!!

LisaSimpsonsbff · 21/11/2018 20:45

I understand if the item was never ever used and not far off the retail price, but obviously used stuff for the same price is ridiculous.

But even if it's never been taken out of the box, why would I pay near retail price? I could just buy an actually new one, with a receipt and the ability to take it back if it breaks.

I've noticed this particularly with baby stuff - just the other day I thought maybe I could save money by buying a second-hand highchair. They were all asking £5 less than retail! I'm quite willing to buy a highchair that someone else's kid has slobbered over, but not for essentially the price of a new one...

QueenOfCatan · 21/11/2018 20:47

Hits ridiculous isn't it?! My entire marketplace on fb is full of it! Most of the stuff on there is so overpriced for what it is, the stuff that isn't is bought and then resold days later by other people asking for more 🙄

Orangesandlemons82 · 21/11/2018 20:48

Our local site had a load of used flannels for £3 eachConfused

Stuckforthefourthtime · 21/11/2018 20:48

Yes! I'm trying to buy lots second hand for Christmas but the number of people who want top prices, AND for me to come and collect in a one hour window is ridiculous. It's so frustrating, I'm trying to do the right thing but when a second hand sleepsuit is up for £5 plus £3.50 postage on ebay, or I can buy a new one for less online, it's hard to do the right thing!

QueenOfCatan · 21/11/2018 20:53

@stripyaocksanddocs could be set pricing. I volunteered in an age concern long long ago and we had another charity shop next door, the manager there used to moan to our manager about the lack of customers and when it was pointed out to them that they were selling (bobbling) primark shirts for more than you paid for them in primark they shrugged and said that they had a set pricing structure. So did we but we also used our common sense! Though our shop had two of us who were much younger checking the labels of the products and ensuring that the brands were priced appropriately, next door didn't and they often thought that atmosphere (and similar) was a trendy brand given how much of it they got given!

Mybigmessyhair · 21/11/2018 20:55

I put an ad up for couple of pairs of kids shoes for a fiver as they’d only been worn once, I ended up giving 2 new pairs along with the 2 hardly worn shoes for free, if someone has to buy second hand shoes for their kids as obv they are a bit down on their luck then why not give them away for free? My kid has loads some kids don’t.
Only reason I put them on for a fiver was because prior to the shoes I gave away a big dining table and chairs with a sideboard for free to see it resold for a few hundred pounds, when I had loads of replies from single mums ect who could have used it themselves and I said never give things away for nothing, I was livid.

Cornettoninja · 21/11/2018 20:55

I think Car boots may be the last bastion of sensible pricing for second hand stuff - shame I’m not really an early bird...

It does annoy me tbh. I love a bit of a bargain wherever it crops up - one mans rubbish is another mans teasure and all that - only really works if everyone operates in the spirit of that.

StripySocksAndDocs · 21/11/2018 20:58

I’ve heard about that, I know Oxfam are set, but these aren’t one of the major ones. The mad expensive one is the only one as far as I know. The manager is grumpy and rude too, who knows how it’s still going!

thenettyprofessor · 21/11/2018 21:00

Someone selling perfume, brand new only squirted twice to smell it.
Not brand new then...

SparklesAndUnicorns · 21/11/2018 21:00

It's like when people buy something from primark for cheap and sell it on for like £50, I don't care if it's brand new when can just go to the shop and get it cheaper!

giveitfive · 21/11/2018 21:01

Someone I know has just posted a gift I bought her son ad a birthday gift on a Facebook selling page that we are both a member of.

She just wants what she paid for it "LOL"... and apparently it's barely used (charming)...

She's asking significantly more for it than I paid for it on Amazon.

She regularly posts stuff at inflated prices.... like baby vests £8.... seriously?

Not surprising she has more holidays than me 😂

I just Send my stuff to the charity shop....

Ploverlover · 21/11/2018 21:03

Just asking what I paid hun.

Just wanting back what I have in it.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 21/11/2018 21:04

Try buying fucking Tracker and his vehicle from Paw Patrol that dd wants. The fucker has been discontinued. It's going for at least £25 plus p&p on ebay. Angry

Whatweretheythinking · 21/11/2018 21:06
