Ridiculous asking prices for second hand stuff

jarhead123 · 21/11/2018 19:30

Just wanting a rant really. So many times I see on FB people selling their old shit for ridiculous money.

Someone was selling a christmas jumper for £8. You can get them new for that!

Someone else selling 2 packs of straws for £1.50.

Another person was selling some disney books (really old, probably new when I was a kid in the 80's) and she wanted £10!!

Does anyone every buy this overpriced stuff?!

OP posts:
cadburyegg · 21/11/2018 21:52

Some of the worst ones are the Facebook pages selling second hand kids clothes of certain brands. Asking silly amounts for play wear jumpers with holes in thinking people will buy it just because it's Frugi or Jojo. What really grinds my gears is when people list something for way over the odds saying "I just want back what I paid for it plus postage" Erm no, what people don't understand is that you should reduce it accordingly to take into account that you have used it. If people constantly list things on that basis + postage, they just get more expensive for more wear, and it goes on and on and on!

Cuppaand2biscuits · 21/11/2018 21:53

I agree with the poster who said the reverse is what confused me more.
Who can be bothered to list something and answer the door for 50p or £1?

DrCoconut · 21/11/2018 21:54

On FB you also get pisstakers who expect you to sell the item for 50p and deliver it too. I end up putting things in the front yard with a free sign on. They get taken. Community recycling at its best!

MisstoMrs · 21/11/2018 21:58

I agree with PP. I don’t bother with facebook. I just give to charity. I’ve got a bag waiting to go now with almost unused toys, some still with tags etc but I can’t face the Horlicks of being haggled with over 50p for a teddy bear.

MakeAHouseAHome · 21/11/2018 22:02

I am a bit baffled.... What does this have to do with you? If people pay the prices for these things how does it effect you?

I sell alot of stuff through Gumtree, Sphock, Facebook and dependong on what it is I don't sell it hugely less that what I bought it for. I.e. clothes I have worn once or twice I sell for maybe 30% less than I bought them for. Gift sets that have never been used maybe 10% to 20% less than RRP.

Hate to tell you but people do buy them, and that is fine by me. Makes me money haha.

Sugarsnappy · 21/11/2018 22:03

I saw this excellent condition car seat for sale on a Facebook group Confused I can't remember how much for, but surely you couldn't even give that away?

Ridiculous asking prices for second hand stuff
longestlurkerever · 21/11/2018 22:16

@makeahouse. Technically nothing but it's somehow depressing and captivating at the same time. It's a reminder that the world is very mercenary. You can almost see the dollar signs in people's eyes when someone gives them a gift. On the other hand it's better than this stuff ending up in landfill so I'm torn. Unless people end up actually buying more overall because they think they'll be able to get their money back?

Dragonbait · 21/11/2018 22:19

I once saw someone pay £52 plus postage of £1 for £50 of vouchers. Couldn't quite figure out why - other than getting carried away with bidding!

Holidayshopping · 21/11/2018 22:19

I’ve seen a few people selling,’£100-black bin bags of designer toddler clothes’ type posts.

When people have asked to see photos, they’ve received the, ‘really busy, haven’t got time for photos-it’s all quality stuff, trust me’ type comments, then they bump their posts up daily for a week.

When finally someone posts, ‘do you really expect people to pay £100 for a load of unseen clothes in a bin bag’ some mysterious poster piles in with a barrage of abuse and some ‘OMG, you are missing out on such a bargain, you loser’ type comments.

It’s quite funny really!

LifeofClimb · 21/11/2018 22:26

Well you don’t have to buy 🙄 honestly the cheeky fuckers who message asking to pay less than the listed for whatever vague reason they can come up with... the starting price is the minimum, end of (on ebay). Piss off you want something worth £90 new for less than £10. Go and find another mug...

Littlecaf · 21/11/2018 22:28

I’m a bit of a pram/stroller geek and I love trawling the second hand for sale boards.... you can get some fab bargains but sometimes what the asking prices are does not reflect the (lack) quality of the item.

£70 for a second hand 3 year old silver cross Pop which needs a wipe?
£450 for a Bugaboo Bee?

And please take your kid out of it when you photograph. I don’t want to buy something which is obviously well used if it’s listed as ‘like new’.

GandalfsRing · 21/11/2018 22:43

I’ve put a few things on FB marketplace on behalf of my dc.
Generally if they want something new (bloody LOL dolls) they save their pocket money or can do a few jobs (wash car) or sell a few bits. Don’t think I’ve charged more than £1. So the 20p/50p items could be going into a child’s money box!

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 21/11/2018 22:44

Someone with an empty fridge and on emergency electric?

Smsmeeesmeghhhehead · 21/11/2018 22:58

Soft toys... no one wants used soft toys but there are frequently folk trying to flog a load of worn toys for 5 quid odds a bear.

Equally odd is the woman near me who has been trying to flog the same jewellery tree thing for well over a year. It pops up periodically. She wants 3 quid for it. I want to scream JUST CHARITY SHOP IT FOR FUCKS SAKE every time she puts up a new post for it.

Genuine question - is it ok to give something to a charity shop that you know people don't want to buy? We have a horrible TV stand that I tried to sell for £5 on gumtree and (understandably, TBH) got no offers on. DH wants to give it to our local furniture charity shop but I suspect that if we can't sell it nor can they, and so it feels a bit like using the charity shop as a tip?

BlancheM · 21/11/2018 23:02

Yeah the reverse makes me feel quite sad :(

I was on eBay earlier and couldn't believe what other people were asking for. A toddler's Boden dress for about £40!
People seem to price up on account of items being 'sold out/no longer available' well, that's because it's out of season now and old. They see their stuff as being more valuable rather than less despite being second hand or used.

Hideandgo · 21/11/2018 23:06

I do think the attitude towards second hand generally stinks though. There is so much perfectly working/usable stuff in people’s houses but we are all brainwashed into thinking that if it doesn’t come with the nasty plastic packaging straight from the shop, it’s worth nothing. It’s not worth nothing. It’s worth a lot to anyone who wants it needs it. It should always be cheaper than new but not necessarily 10 times cheaper.

I think we could all do with having a bit more appreciation for second hand things.

TurquoiseDress · 21/11/2018 23:07

@Sugarsnappy

Omg, the state of that car seat.
Plus it's not really my colour at all Grin

It's not the 'nasty plastic packaging' that makes me value something bought brand new over something second hand, it's the consumer protections and knowledge it's either in full working order or I can get it replaced.

dustarr73 · 21/11/2018 23:11

I know someone on the fb marketplace, who puts up phones, and stuff. For nearly the price they are new.She never sells them.

cadburyegg · 21/11/2018 23:11

Well 50p isn’t a lot but combined with lots of other items its worth it. I listed some baby sleeping bags and clothes on Facebook marketplace the other day for 50p/£1 each, sold them all on the same day. I got £8 for the lot which is enough to take my baby/preschooler to our regular playgroups for a couple of weeks without needing to get cash out/have the right change Smile

It's a thing. It's called the Mere Ownership Effect:

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/11/2018 23:17

@2019bride2be, erm, you say that!

My friend just sold a dress she bought earlier in the year - she's pregnant so can't wear it. It was expensive new and she advertised it for a small amount below the full price.

Loads of offers asking for it at that price. A few asking for more if she'd go for them. And, inevitably, the odd cheapskate saying they'd never pay that and she would never get buyers.

Funnily enough, she went with the person prepared to pay the most and ended up with almost the full price once she'd covered her postage costs. The point is that people often want a specific dress, and in this case, she made someone very happy who was keen to buy a dress no longer available elsewhere.

TigerTooth · 21/11/2018 23:25

I had to get two violins for my boys.
I looked at the 2nd hand list at Dots music shop in Camden and two people fairly local were selling 2nd hand instruments.
The first lady lived in Islington in a small slightly cluttered family home, she sold me the violin, and included the bow, spare bow, case, chalk etc and then she was sweeping the room and shoving music books and chin stands etc, no extra cost.

The next was in a gated show home in St Johns wood, electric gates, intercom told me to go into the side entrance etc, worth a good few million, the wine cooler all high gadgetry was twice the size of my kitchen! They sold the violin for the same price with case but wanted extra for spare bow and accessories. I declined the extras and was disgusted at their greed, thinking of the less wealthy mum who couldn't include enough for free. My boys have outgrown the small violins now and I donated them to the charity shop.
Some rich people are so mean - the 2nd family weren't just wealthy they were super-wealthy. They should have donated violin to local state school - Disgusting.

TealTurnip · 21/11/2018 23:28

@cadburyegg People DO pay stupid prices for second hand clothes if they’re Frugi or whatever brand though. They typically sell at about 75% of their original value. Wooden toys also retain about 80% of their value second hand as well. By the time you pay postage you’re forking our 90% of the RRP so might as well buy new. The 10% saving isn’t worth the hassle of having no guarantee or potentially being scammed etc. Of course some people happily pay only pennies less than the RRP because it makes them feel good about recycling. Mugs!

It’s good that people are dumb enough to pay that much though. Means I can choose those brands for my DC and get the majority of my money back!
