I've namechanged because this will out me.
But my neighbours are on Age Gap Love tonight on C5.
He was her step father ffs!!!
But they have kids!!
AIBU to think that if you have kids in such a fucked up relationship you don't draw attention to the fact that your relationship is fucked up!?

Erm think the mere fact that you’ve said you live next door to them has outed you.....

TakeMe2Insanity · 21/11/2018 15:51

Well presumably they’ll realise who you are.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 21/11/2018 15:52

Neighbours doesn’t mean next door necessarily

newtothisriver · 21/11/2018 15:53

That's why OP name changed. Yes it will out her in terms of being their neighbour, but it protects her posting history and keeps it private.

ofgsWTF · 21/11/2018 15:53

No not next door, same area.

OP posts:
ofgsWTF · 21/11/2018 15:54

Yes, that's what I meant by name changing newtothisriver.

I think it speaks volumes in terms of mentality that the mother considered her husband and daughter to be having an 'affair' when she was just 16. Any parent with half a brain would see the surety bastard for what he was and protect their daughter. The family sound so messed up it's unreal, but to normalise what was obviously an abusive situation is an awful thing for the mother to do.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 21/11/2018 16:01

God, that article is depressing.

Snowwontbelong · 21/11/2018 16:02

Haven't read the article but it is illegal to have a relationship with a former step parent.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 21/11/2018 16:07

Was this guy her actual step parent or was he just married to her mother? The article linked states that when this guy married her mother she was living with father and then went into foster care. It suggests that they never had a parent/child relationship. That doesn’t make the 14/55 (?) age gap/possible grooming thing right but i think the DM has sensationalised the step-parent side of things (as if the story needed more).

twattymctwatterson · 21/11/2018 16:15

God that's revolting. Reading between the lines there was a cross over in the relationship and likely she's married her abuser

Lovemusic33 · 21/11/2018 16:17

It’s not illegal (they are not blood relations).

I feel sorry for the kids, why go on tv to make yourself look even more stupid Sad

user139328237 · 21/11/2018 16:19

I was at school with siblings whose father was in a relationship with their maternal grand mother (and had quite possibly had a son with the grandmother in the 11 months between the sibling's births).

Storm4star · 21/11/2018 16:20

There is clearly a lot more to this. She didn't live with her mum, she was in foster care. Why was that the situation? This relationship has probably resulted from a mix of resentment towards her mother and a need for stability. The guy is the one who's done wrong in this. He took advantage of a messed up 15/16 year old girl (it's unclear to me at what age it started) when he could and should have been a support to the family.

prh47bridge · 21/11/2018 16:22

No it isn't. A step parent and step child cannot marry but there is nothing in law to prevent them having a relationship unless the step parent has adopted the child.

riotlady · 21/11/2018 16:23

Oh that’s really upsetting tbh. I hate it when tv/newspapers sensationalise things like this when it’s clearly just a sad story of a 15 year old girl from a troubled background, in foster care, being groomed by an old man. It’s not “ooooh, taboo love” it’s basically abuse.

thebear1 · 21/11/2018 16:24

The mirror article says he was interviewed by the police over the relationship, although not charged. It sounds horrendous.

Missingstreetlife · 21/11/2018 16:28

Ick. Shades of woody Allen. Poor girl was a victim

InfantaSybilla · 21/11/2018 16:28

A step parent and step child cannot marry

But they are married according to the article. Is their marriage invalid? I recall reading about an obscure law once where it was illegal for men to marry their former mother in laws. I'm not sure if it's ever been repealed.

prh47bridge · 21/11/2018 16:29

In saying this, I am assuming they are both adults at the time of the relationship. If the step child is under 18 it is illegal.

diddl · 21/11/2018 16:30

The daughter sounds so messed up, doesn't she?

Twatforahat · 21/11/2018 16:30

A heart warming tale.

MrsTWH · 21/11/2018 16:31

He was an anusive older man praying on a very vulnerable teenage girl. She’s clearly had a very difficult life, being in foster care and with a mother who feels a 15 year old can have an “affair” with a man in his 50s. He groomed the girl. It’s awful IMO.

Storm4star · 21/11/2018 16:31

I agree and it disturbs me how things like this are branded as "entertainment". Which is probably why I don't watch a lot of TV!

OutPinked · 21/11/2018 16:33

I would class him as more of a stepfather if he had raised her from a fairly young age. She was a vulnerable girl in foster care presumably with a very broken relationship with her Mother. It does sound like to her this was an act of revenge in some way but who knows. I feel the man in question has somewhat groomed her. It’s sad all round.!
