He was her step father ffs!!!
But they have kids!!
AIBU to think that if you have kids in such a fucked up relationship you don't draw attention to the fact that your relationship is fucked up!?

Ewwww, that's made me feel a bit funny.

Worriedmummybekind · 21/11/2018 16:35

The girl was 14 and living in foster care when they met. That isn’t exactly an ‘affair’ is it. Her mum sounds awful for not seeing her as an abused child. The fact they run a bouncy castle company doesn’t sit well with me.

MarthaArthur · 21/11/2018 16:37

How sad and disturbing. And she says theres no romance and she doesn't fancy him.

secondarymincepie · 21/11/2018 16:39

The wedding photo is disturbing. She looks like a child playing dress up with her dad. Which I guess she is.

SushiMonster · 21/11/2018 16:41

He was an anusive older man praying on a very vulnerable teenage girl. She’s clearly had a very difficult life, being in foster care and with a mother who feels a 15 year old can have an “affair” with a man in his 50s. He groomed the girl. It’s awful IMO.

I actually watched this program today. I had a look online and found the attached screenshot, assuming this is correct surely their marriage is illegal? I have also attached the link where I found the screenshot.

Sorry should have said that because they married when she was 18.

diddl · 21/11/2018 16:58

Yes, I thought that they had to both be 21 & not have lived together as father/daughter.

"Step-Relatives
Step-relatives may marry provided they are at least 21 years of age. The younger of the couple must at no time before the age of 18 have lived in the same household as the older person. Neither must they have been treated as a child of the older person's family. "

Cosmos45 · 21/11/2018 17:01

There was another thread on here a while ago and this is far more common than some might think.. My MIL has a brother who was married to a lady and lived with her and her daughter and the daughter and he ran off with each other when she had her 16th birthday. So this was some 25-30 years ago. They are still together, she is in her 40's and he in his 70's.. It's all quite bizarre as the family including my MIL didn't talk to them (her brother and his stepdaughter) for years but now they are all best friends and spend loads of time together, go on holidays, etc. So there's a 40 year old woman on holiday with 3 people in their mid 70's.. I find it quite odd to be honest!

JellyBears · 21/11/2018 17:04

How could she have met him for the first time if she was bridesmaid at the wedding? Surely they met before? Whatever each to their own I suppose.

ConcreteUnderpants · 21/11/2018 17:05

Is it me or does he look a bit like Gary Glitter the first DM photo?

prh47bridge · 21/11/2018 17:11

But they are married according to the article. Is their marriage invalid

Apologies. I simplified a little.

A marriage between a step parent and step child is not void provided they are both over 21 at the time of marriage and the step child was not a child of the family before reaching the age of 18. In this case it appears she lived with her father, so was not a child of the family. The Daily Mirror report says she was 20 when they married. If that is correct the marriage is void. Provided they waited until her 21st birthday the marriage is valid.

HollowTalk · 21/11/2018 17:15

@JellyBears, she was living with her dad and then in foster care. It was clear she didn't see much of her mum.

prh47bridge · 21/11/2018 17:15

Correction - she lived with her father and then moved into foster care. She was not at any point living with her mother and step father prior to the age of 18.

Sorry should have said that because they married when she was 18

The Daily Mirror says 20. You might infer 18 from the Mail's suggestion that they are planning a vow renewal for their 10th anniversary but it doesn't mean that anniversary is imminent. It could be a few years away.

Bumbumtaloo · 21/11/2018 17:27

prh47bridge I’m not sure why I typed 18, I meant 20. I’m going to give up now lol.

Talith · 21/11/2018 17:28

In the DM article she says he's fat and she doesn't fancy him - I don't think they seem particularly happy together.

I'm reminded of a documentary a few years ago with a younger man who fell in love with quite an old lady (they were united by their love of hammond organ music if memory serves) - it was a bit of an eye raiser but there was genuine affection between them at least and you were left thinking "well each to their own".

RandomlyChosenName · 21/11/2018 17:30

The article implies that she was living with her mother and stepfather at the age of 17. If not earlier for some of the time. (I can’t be bothered to read again to check). I assume living with in the context of law doesn’t have to mean 7 days a week.

A parent and child in an EOW living arrangement would surely be counted as living as a family.

Very sad story, from the foster care and not meeting stepfather until the wedding. But presumably met mother to fit bridesmaid dress etc... The stepfather abused her and the mother let her down very badly.

Dard · 21/11/2018 17:42

Older men young girls think of Mandy Smith and Bill Wyman it is ignored it is abuse

Letsmoveondude · 21/11/2018 17:45

Legalities and general yuck aside, yeah you’d think they’d have the respect for their kids to not bring attention to the relationship. Them poor poor kids.

dellacucina · 21/11/2018 17:45

What are they like IRL?

They probably don't see it as fucked up. (Though obviously it is)

Letsmoveondude · 21/11/2018 17:51

I’m concerned that he married his very young looking 18 year old step daughter, who was childish enough to have that wedding cake and a dog as her bridesmaid, and now runs a bouncy castle company?

Very fucking shady character.

ofgsWTF · 21/11/2018 20:07

IRL she comes across as very young considering she's 28. Not only do they run a bouncy castle business, but they help out with scouts and he plays Father Christmas for our local catholic school, who all know his past but choose to ignore it. He's creepy.

OP posts:
Letsmoveondude · 21/11/2018 20:16

No fucking way. I’m sorry but I can’t see how that’s happening.

I gathered she would have seemed quite young for her years given she had a dog as a bridesmaid at her wedding. Even for 18 that seems highly immature.

ofgsWTF · 21/11/2018 20:35

I shit you not it is. You couldn't make it up if you tried. I'm interested in what's going to be said on the show tonight.

LuvSmallDogs · 21/11/2018 20:53

Ah well, here’s hoping the grotty old bastard kicks the bucket soon without lingering around so she has to look after him. Then maybe she can move on with her life.
