Second hand xmas present

Hi, my DS2 is obsessed with garbage trucks and bins. He already has 5 trucks and really enjoys playing with them. I've just bought a Bruder type truck on eBay for £15 second hand as part of his xmas presents. They sell for £50 in the shops with £15 delivery as they are from Germany.

I discussed this today with my sister who said she is disgusted that I've bought second hand for xmas. AIBU or is she? The way I see it, is that's he's only 2 and won't know any difference but after our conversation I'm now doubting myself.

Sensible to but 2nd hand. It’s better for the environment and you can save money to spend on other things or just save.

I am fuming I had ds with me when we found a Paw Patrol toy- just out - priced £24.99, for 2 quid at a market!! It would have been wrapped up!!

A lot of my children's presents are second hand. £200 of playmobil for £40 - my three year old doesn't care! I've got nieces and nephews second hand stuff too (with parents' approval). Sensible in my opinion!

Really good idea. I have bought second hand presents for the dc this Christmas. They need the planet more than they need cellophane packaging.

Your sister is the unreasonable one. One year our child was into that wooden train track (Brio or something, can't remember now) and I bought loads of stuff off eBay, saved a fortune and child couldn't have cared less! I kind of regretted it when the entire house became a train track due to the miles I had bought, haha, but that's a different story...

Half of DS's gifts this year will be second hand. DH works in a posh area where the charity shops are stuffed with stuff that's either barely used or brand new. We'll get anything he needs on the January sales.

DD is one and DS is two. We have bought them two presents each for Xmas, and all are second hand. They get tons for Christmas from friends and relatives, so it's pointless spending any more. I'd rather save the extra and use it for days out during the rest of the year.

I don't think there is anything wrong with second hand as a gift for dc. I recently bought a huge bundle of children's books second hand. I was gutted that dd was there when we went through them as I realised quite a few would have made perfect Christmas gifts for her. Never mind.

You are not only quite reasonable but eminently sensible in my opinion. Your sis is out of order.

Dd often gets secondhand gifts. She prefers it both environmentally and also she knows she’ll get more gifts for my present budget.
She’s just smashed her phone, she’s happier I’ve gone to CEX for the replacement than another one from Vodaphone.

It is eminently sensible - my ds3 has just had a second hand Xbox for his birthday with loads of games. Total cost £40 but he loves it and is absolutely buzzing.

There is so much needless waste in our society at the moment. You are sensible not to add to it and to recycle instead.

What are your sisters reasons?

My kids get loads of second hand stuff. Toys when they are small, secondhand laptops and games consoles when they are bigger. They don't care. Always make sure they are immaculate and working (obviously) but why on earth would it be grounds to be "disgusted"? Your sis could do with lifting her head above the parapet a bit....

I sold a load of my kids Happyland stuff on Gumtree. Woman arrives, beautifully dressed in a posh car. 'Its the whole village' she squealed. 'I'm going to set it all up for my granddaughter. It will be her Christmas present'. She was so happy with it she gave me a fiver EXTRA to get my kids some sweets. My DH said, she doesn't look as if she would give secondhand Christmas presents. I thought good on her.

DS4’s main Christmas present is a second hand bike. I wanted to get him a Frog, they are about £250 new for a bike he’ll grow out of fairly quickly. Buying second hand saved me £100 and hopefully I’ll be able to sell it on for only a little less than I paid.

If I want/need to get something my first port of call is almost always ebay - seems a fairly virtuous circle to me - someone gets some money to buy what they want instead the item going to land fill and I get to buy it for less than if it was new. The only thing I'd say is give it a good disinfect when it arrives.....

We got a Peppa Pig kitchen with all accessories for £20 in excellent condition, retails @ £100, our 3 year would never know the difference and it's better to recycle than to chuck masses of plastic in the bin?

I got second hand presents for Christmas as a child and didn't realise till my mum told me as an adult, to me they were just toys.

I get my own children second hand presents, my son collects Schleich Smurfs. He is autistic and finds pictures of which ones he wants and just picks out what appeals to him. This is often ones that were released years ago so it isn't possibly to get them new but they can be found on eBay. Most of the Smurfs in his collection are older than he is and some are older than me!

Good on you! We're doing as much as possible second hand this year - we can afford new, but seeing all the news about plastic pollution and wasted clothing, it feels a bit immoral to celebrate Christmas with a load of new tat.
