Second hand xmas present

Hi, my DS2 is obsessed with garbage trucks and bins. He already has 5 trucks and really enjoys playing with them. I've just bought a Bruder type truck on eBay for £15 second hand as part of his xmas presents. They sell for £50 in the shops with £15 delivery as they are from Germany.

I discussed this today with my sister who said she is disgusted that I've bought second hand for xmas. AIBU or is she? The way I see it, is that's he's only 2 and won't know any difference but after our conversation I'm now doubting myself.

Your sister is being totally daft. DS wouldn't know the difference and he'll enjoy playing with the toy, second hand or otherwise. You have a budget and sticking to it sensibly is the right thing to do.

WhyAmISoCold · 21/11/2018 14:22

I bought my DC second hand toys at that age. All excellent condition. I've also sold toys in excellent condition that could be used as presents, nothing wrong with it at all.

Worlds0kayestmum · 21/11/2018 14:23

I've just bought my 18month old DS a load of second hand toot toot stuff. It's sooo expensive to buy brand new and he won't care one bit that they are second hand when he's playing with them Christmas morning

Hissy · 21/11/2018 14:24

Your sister is "disgusted"

FFS - she REALLY needs some REAL problems in her life!

nowahousewife · 21/11/2018 14:29

Excellent idea OP and your DS is definitely BU. My now uni aged son loved the Beano when he was little, one of his best ever Christmas presents was a job lot of Beano’s I got off ebay for £13. They all came from the 1980’s and he was fascinated by the changes from the modern ones. He still has them btw.

Tell your sister they are collectibles!

Oblomov18 · 21/11/2018 14:30

Stupid woman. eBay second hand is brilliant.

Sunshineonleaf · 21/11/2018 14:33

For DS2's first Christmas I wrapped up a load of DS1's old toys.
He got to open lots of big parcels and DS1 wasn't old enough to notice or care.
He's TWO he really doesn't care.

Scientistic · 21/11/2018 14:34

Good for you op!

Scientistic · 21/11/2018 14:35

I'm doing that this year @sunshineonleaf

Lymphy · 21/11/2018 14:35

I've bought my ds mainly second hand this year he's 3, he doesn't have a clue and will be super pleased, the only new thing I've bought is a toolbench and that's a black Friday deal, nothing wrong with it at all

Heartofglass21 · 21/11/2018 14:37

Second hand doesn't mean second best.

TabbyM · 21/11/2018 14:38

Now while I'm generally all in favour of buying second hand presents, try not to buy a bike that belonged to a neighbour.....

plaidlife · 21/11/2018 14:38

Your dsis is a numpty.
One year I got a wide range of Thomas the tank engines from eBay bundles, my DC where too small to tell any difference and instead of a couple they were able to get the whole yard pretty much. I then passed them on to a friend with DC when they were older and no longer played with them.
Why waste either money or resources if you don't need to.

Bear2014 · 21/11/2018 14:39

I'd much rather buy a quality item second hand than a cheap one new, and if more people did this our planet would be in a better state than it is. Your sister is being silly especially as your DS is 2!

Feefeetrixabelle · 21/11/2018 14:39

There should be more pride in being frugal. It makes much more sense to save money and the planet than to buy new.

As long as what your buying isn’t trashed then it’s not trash.

UserName31456789 · 21/11/2018 14:39

Your sister is an idiot. Even as an adult I'd much rather get a second hand gift that someone had found the time to source because they knew I loved it than something new and shiny in a box that I wasn't that bothered about. Also at 2 he won't even know so she's being ridiculous.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 21/11/2018 14:39

People who are "disgusted" at second hand need to give their heads a wobble.

InfantaSybilla · 21/11/2018 14:39

Most of my dd's toys are second hand but my siblings are the same, they think I'm really tight buying presents second hand then they bitch that we can afford to go abroad on holiday and wonder why they can't

TheLurkingOne · 21/11/2018 14:41

I'm sorting my X mas with 20p audio CDs and funny/old school / nearly vintage DVDs that came free with newspapers years ago, and now abundant in charity shops; just got 2 horrid Henry audio books for 20p each as stocking fillers. Pretty much get any david Attenborough you'd ever want there too. Less consumerism. Better all round.

DragonFire99 · 21/11/2018 14:44

Your sister is being bonkers, imo. He won't know the difference. It's much better for the planet too.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 21/11/2018 14:46

Absolutely sensible. I've bought my dc secondhand, and they've received it from other too. By boxing day, when all the packaging is gone, they look the same anyway!

Rhiannon13 · 21/11/2018 14:47

My Dad's Christmas present is second hand. It's something he loves that isn't made any more.

Never feel bad about buying used stuff. Recycling/ reusing is the best thing we can be doing as far as the environment is concerned!

Bluelonerose · 21/11/2018 14:49

Your dsis isn't with my exh is she? Shock

I wanted to give ds2 ds1/dd big red car for outside one Xmas. Exh called me every name under the sun because I wasn't buying his child a brand new one. Hmm

Ds2 didn't care and we passed it on to a neighbour and it was still being played with last summer. Ok it had faded in the sun but none of the kids cared they were just happy to have a car to play in even if it is over 13 years old!

PopGoesTheWeaz · 21/11/2018 14:51

This should be the norm and she is BU.
