Gogglebox, the family who wear their shoes indoors

I like this family but I can’t help but wince when I see a plate full of biscuits on their foot rest surrounded by feet encased in trainers.

AIBU to think they should TAKE THEM OFF!

Sorry.

@psicat - Genuine question for shoes on people - do you where them upstairs?

Yes. I see no reason not to.

When do you take them off? And when do you put them on??

Whenever suits. Shoes are generally stored in bedrooms so they can be put on in the morning and taken off at bedtime or at any time in between.

I find it totally bizarre

I find it bizarre that you seem to be so lacking in imagination that you find it bizarre that other people do things differently to you.

HugoBearsMummy · 23/11/2018 15:44

Can't stand shoes indoors, also drives me up the wall if people don't immediately remove coats/hats etc upon entering the house... DH has habit of sitting on sofa if we've been out for the day with his coat still on? Winds me right up. I always say 'ARE YOU GOING BACK OUT???' Lol.

That's what 99% of threads/comments on AIBU boil down to: 'AIBU to be baffled that everyone in the world isn't exactly the same as me?' Grin

@SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst 😁

I'm totally with you Rock it is stomach churning when you consider what those shoes have stepped in.

A relative of mine once stepped into my hallway (carpeted) with shoes covered in dog mess. Luckily I was in the habit of asking people to remove shoes before entering the living room (also carpeted). It was utterly gross and I've never recovered!

mikado1 · 23/11/2018 21:18

Scones tonight! Even worse with the shoes nearby! We don't have a rule on shoes off, unless wellies say, but I take mine off for comfort pretty quickly and DC take theirs off for the couch. No biggie either way.

mikado1 · 23/11/2018 21:25

HugoBearsMummy I do this! My bil laughs at me, or maybe rages! I could be in an hour and not take my coat off. Psychological, I read somewhere!

Urchinella · 24/11/2018 09:45

Not only do I not wear outdoor shoes in the house, I don't wear outdoor trousers either, nothing to do with germs though, it's all about comfort.

Joggers and slippers are essential for lounging around surely.

How do the shoes off dog owner brigade cope with all the dirt that comes in from their dogs? Dogs can't take their paws off

I don't understand that either. Also, dogs lie with their genitals/backsides in contact with the carpet, which isn't exactly hygienic Confused

Pimpernell · 24/11/2018 10:53

Not to mention cats. Cats sit on the kitchen counter languorously licking their bumhole till it's sparkling clean.

yorkrose · 24/11/2018 10:56

Bathed regularly/paws cleaned if muddy. I have to confess and was totally horrified at my dog recently. Thought it was funny and busy laughing at her perculiar actions. Bottom seated, back legs raised and front legs pulling her along slowly at first and then faster in a circle ending with a satisfied look. She had left a snail trail! A SKIDDY! Bleach came out.

RockYourSocksOff · 24/11/2018 11:29

When we had a dog the nibble tray wouldn’t have been at the same level as her, otherwise there would have been nowt left!

Yup, I do feel it's strange to put outdoor shoes on when you wake up. That is my feeling on the matter but not saying I'm right, you're wrong or that I can't imagine you doing it.

So, going further down the rabbit hole - do you wear slippers or do the shoes just do instead? And what's the reason for it?

I don't wear shoes in the house because a) dirt (although we have dogs and are outdoorsy people) and b) comfort. All my shoes are comfy but it's not the same as slippers or nothing - if you find if comfier I want to know what kind of shoes you're wearing 😁

theymademejoin · 25/11/2018 10:02

I'm currently wearing a pair od Dr Marten airwaves. I sometimes go barefoot (or socked) if I'm putting my feet under me on the couch.

I dislike slippers. I prefer the support from shoes.

LoniceraJaponica · 25/11/2018 10:03

IMO Sketchers are even more comfy than slippers. I need new slippers, but just realised that my freshly washed Sketchers Go Walks will do.

longwayoff · 26/11/2018 18:44

Skechers Go Walk memory foam shoes are the king of comfort. Neither shoe nor slipper but ahhhhh.

LoniceraJaponica · 26/11/2018 18:51

I wish they were more stylish. Nothing else I have tried match them for comfort. DD (18) is currently working in retail and everyone in the shop (all young) wears Sketchers and have recommended that she does. She is wearing a pair of mine today.

longwayoff · 26/11/2018 20:16

Hey Lonicera, if all the young girls are wearing them, they're stylish by default! Put some tinsel on them.

skybluee · 26/11/2018 21:15

My shoes are covered in mud. There's no way I'd wear them indoors. I have white carpets and it would completely trash them. It would end up looking gross very very quickly. One of my friends wore hiking boots inside and left a trail of mud in the hall. It took a long time to hoover and clean the mud up. It was trodden into the carpet.

I find it much easier to just remove shoes at the door and leave them in a line. Then put them on before I go outside. Less mess, less hassle. Doesn't really seem to link to class to me as there are families at both ends of the spectrum with opposing views.

longwayoff · 27/11/2018 08:12

It's absolutely fascinating how different everyone is with regard to hygiene. I wear shoes in the house and don't ask people to remove them - unless they're obviously too mucky to be borne. But I wouldn't have carpets in the house, I think they're awful germ laden things that never can be properly clean, no matter how pristine you are. Which I'm not.

Boredisboring · 27/11/2018 08:34

This:

“E coli can lead to some very unpleasant illness such as diarrhea, intestinal problems, or even meningitis. This is just one type of bacteria being carried in on the soles of shoes, on average the sole of a typical shoe just walking about on a normal day has as many as 421,000 different types of bacteria hanging out. Multiple studies of shoes carrying bacteria into your home and transferring it to the floor have shown the transfer rate from sole to home is between 90 and 99 percent.”

If the presence of E. Coli isn’t jarring enough to have you set up a shoe removal station on your front porch, how about the presence of Clostridium difficile? This bacteria has the potential to cause life-threatening inflammation of the colon. A new study conducted in 2017 found that over 25% of the shoes tested were carrying this harmful bugger. Once thought to only be picked up from medical facilities the study found the presences of Clostridium difficile on shoes from parks, chain stores, fast food locations, and other retail stores. Only 448 of 2538 samples carrying the bacteria came from hospitals. Of course, the homes of participants with the dangerous bacteria on their shoes also tested positive.

longwayoff · 27/11/2018 08:48

Yup. I'm over 60, 2 children, 5 grandchildren, dogs and cats always, shoes on throughout and none of us have ever suffered from the ill effects of the bacteria you describe. Perhaps we all have resilient immune systems? Oh, where can they have come from?

clockworklime · 27/11/2018 08:56

When I was a kid we always wore our shoes in the house - I remember it well as I always found it weird when I visited other peoples‘ houses and I was asked to take them off
