It's ridiculous.

Unless they're offering a good, thick, warm coat as part of the uniform I don't see how they can do this.

Do they want everyone to but cheap coats that barely last a term?

I'd be sending my daughter in the coat we've bought her that I know will keep her warm, allow her to be seen in the dark and will last the winter.

MrsJayy · 20/11/2018 20:22

Dd moaned the face off me for a jane norman bag for school an actual carrier bag

LEMtheoriginal · 20/11/2018 20:23

But the wearing of fox and coyote fur is ethical??? Confused

MrsJayy · 20/11/2018 20:24

You can get coats that are warm that are not 600 quid though justification for these coats are a bit silly

Beamur · 20/11/2018 20:24

I wouldn't spend that much on a coat and the real fur (hard to see how using real fur and down is ever ethical) would put me off completely. I think they are horrible.

Doyouavocado · 20/11/2018 20:24

If you wear Canada goose your a knob

MrsStrowman · 20/11/2018 20:25

I went to a state secondary, the rule was no logos on shoes, bags, coats, PE trainers/trackies they all had to be plain black. Seemed to work ok

CatAndMice · 20/11/2018 20:26

@TinklyLittleLaugh

Down can be very cruel. Think about the implications of live plucking. Without painkillers. And having tears sewn again together after. With no anaesthetic

“Birds would be pinned down while they are literally ripped apart for their feathers before being sewn back together with no painkillers,” said Anne

Not all down is like this, but people aren’t aware of the cruelty behind down.

christmaschristmaschristmas · 20/11/2018 20:26

Meh. If you can afford to buy what is essentially a lovely coat for your child, why the bloody hell should they not be able to wear it to school? It'll keep them toasty on the walk to school and at breaks.

I've got far more of a problem with parents who buy their kids to school it coats which can't withstand a drop of rain.

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 20:27

I'm against the use of very much exploited workers who make fake goods yes. But I am not against fur, I believe that's another debate for another thread though.

christmaschristmaschristmas · 20/11/2018 20:28

And the ethical stance? It's no worse than eating meat. Do people know pigs are gassed in the UK?

wirralsquirral · 20/11/2018 20:28

The school is on the Wirral! there's probably 2 days in the school year when it falls below zero and then it'll be minus 2 max. It has one of the lowest rates of snowfall in the UK!

I can assure you the kids don't 'need' the coats for warmth or quality - just like the banning of designer labels on shoes, coats are banned to ensure no pressure on those that can't afford them.

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 20:29

christmaschristmaschristmas I agree, I won't be told by anyone that I shouldn't provide the best I possibly can for my DC

christmaschristmaschristmas · 20/11/2018 20:29

There will always be a wealth gap between pupils and it will always be evident. From school shoes to phones to laptops to coats to makeup to the cars their parents pick them up in to each others homes.

Kids will always know who has money and who doesn't. Banning 'designer coats' won't stop this.

christmaschristmaschristmas · 20/11/2018 20:30

@Pinkyyy YYY - it is not my issue that another child is feeling jealous of my DC item. If it is good and suitable for my DC, I will buy it. End of.

bandito · 20/11/2018 20:31

I thought this was an animal cruelty thread! Never heard of these coats but then I do live in the sunny south.

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 20:33

Exactly. My DC appreciate what they get and they would never ever brag or make someone feel insuperior due to what someone else was wearing. I understand not all children are like this, but there are definitely more pressing issues to be dealt with in schools

JoyceTempleSavage · 20/11/2018 20:33

When we go into town my DS points them out to me in awe

He’s still not having one

ThePoliticiansPraiseMyName · 20/11/2018 20:36

I find it difficult to get worked up about the coyote fur, they are a pest out here, they hunt round our village and try and lure pet dogs away. I can't imagine it being cold enough in the Uk to warrant 1k on a CG coat though. Out here, the school only closes when the weather goes below -30, and the children have outdoor recess until it hits -25 (unless actively snowing when they would stay inside at -20 or below). Out here, children definitely do have and need Canada goose jackets. To walk to the bus stop in drizzle and damp? Not so much Grin

Unicornandbows · 20/11/2018 20:37

The three brands mentioned are Canada Goose, Pyrenex and Moncler.

The ban is based on wealth division and not ethical stances against animal cruelty.

CrookedMe · 20/11/2018 20:39

I don't give a shit about this either way, but please can we not try to make 'wealth shaming' a thing Confused

MrsJayy · 20/11/2018 20:41

But these coats are not bought that because we live in artic canada and it is keeping the snow and freezing temps out those jackets were bought because the kid asked for it or parents like designer gear on their kids. You could go into tresspass and get a decent warm down jacket that isn't 600 quid but choose not too.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/11/2018 20:45

But the wearing of fox and coyote fur is ethical??? confused

You took the words right out of my mouth, LEM

£600 on a coat, any bloody coat, is madness imo, especially a child's coat. I'd be shitting myself every time I went out incase I was mugged for it. If my child/teen was out and about in a ridiculously expensive coat I'd not rest.

It would be really interesting if someone did a blind test on these coats to see just how much warmer/better made they are than the equivalent high st brand and if the price is really justified.

SkaTastic · 20/11/2018 20:49

Micke same for our dyslexic and dyspraxic boy. I just got him a lovely coat in Lidl Middle Aisle!! £15 and he loves it.

£650 for a kids coat! Madness.

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 20:49

To be honest with you I don't think (and I could be wrong) that majority of people who buy these coats do so purely for the warmth aspect. It's a brand thing, some people just like high end brands. For example a Louis Vuitton scarf will set you back £375, is it any warmer than a £5 Primark scarf? No. But you're paying for the brand and it's your choice whether or not you want to do that.
