I feel slightly on the fence.. What do you think?

OP posts:
curgina · 20/11/2018 19:32

Not something I can be bothered about. I teach my kids not to give a shit how expensive their coat or someone else's coat was.

Aquilla · 20/11/2018 19:34

It won't be the richer kids who wear them. It'll be the kids with families who have different 'priorities' .

curgina · 20/11/2018 19:36

Ew, why hasn’t fur been banned?

I know the OP mis-capitalised the thread title, but the coats are made by a brand called Canada Goose, they are not made of goose by a brand called Canada Grin

(at least I hope not)

HopeGarden · 20/11/2018 19:41

I think it’s the wrong time of year to announce this ban, winter coats will have already been bought.

EwItsAHooman · 20/11/2018 19:42

Canada Goose use real fur on their coats

Banana770 · 20/11/2018 19:42

The ban shouldn’t be necessary as the parents should have more common sense than to spend an obscene amount on money on a coat their child will grow out of in a year! I wouldn’t spend more than £100 or so on a coat for myself and I’d expect it to last ages.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/11/2018 19:42

I think the HT has done the right thing. If you can pay out £1k on a coat you can nip to Asda and pick one up for £20 for school days. Could you imagine some angry parent being on the phone because Johnny has lost his £1k coat? Schools have enough to do without having to deal with all that.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/11/2018 19:44

I thought they were stuffed with goose down though. Is that not so?

Aeroflotgirl · 20/11/2018 19:44

Wow who could afford an £800 coat for a kid anyway. Those types of coat started in the Arctic, in below freezing temperatures, not in the warmish climates of Great Britain.

Crazybunnylady123 · 20/11/2018 19:45

Real fur. Disgusting. End of.

EwItsAHooman · 20/11/2018 19:45

The fur trim is real coyote fur.

curgina · 20/11/2018 19:46

Canada Goose use real fur on their coats

Oh yeah, so they do. Guess a lot teenagers care more about brands and image than animal welfare.

Shocker!

Cachailleacha · 20/11/2018 19:47

The ban shouldn’t be necessary as the parents should have more common sense than to spend an obscene amount on money on a coat their child will grow out of in a year! Most school aged kids wouldn't grow out of a coat in a year. My 12 year old is wearing his (size 11) coat for the third year. Don't most parents buy them a little big?

WindyWednesday · 20/11/2018 19:49

Our local secondary doesn’t allow coats at all because there’s no where to store them or hang them. Blazers only.

SoupDragon · 20/11/2018 19:50

Our local secondary doesn’t allow coats at all

That's stupid!

wirralsquirral · 20/11/2018 19:50

I know that school well, I grew up very close to there and my parents still live there (and shop at the Asda 5 min walk from the school!)

I can assure you there will be no 'wealthy' families at the school - based on the national average. It does incredibly well given the area it is in and has great kids from hard working families but it really doesn't feature 'wealth' at all. I do think that they should bring in a uniform coat, rather than ban certain labels and leave the trand to transfer on to something else.

In terms of the real fur thing - aren't the coyotes in plentiful supply/culled so as to avoid being a nuisance? Is there a difference between fur-cruelty and Ugg-boot/Shearling waistcoat cruelty?

Atetoomanyjaffacakes · 20/11/2018 19:50

1k for a coat?

I am from this area, the school is on a council estate. I am shocked that people are spendung such huge amounts on a coat! I think the headteacher is right, thus puts so much pressure on parents. I alsi really hate the thought of a child being mugged for their coat on the way home from school

Starlight345 · 20/11/2018 19:51

I had never heard of Canadian geese coat till a thread on mn and had to google it.

My Ds goes to a none uniform school. He never talks about what anyone wears.

However no matter what you ban the kids know who are the children from rich and poor families.

I say more fool parents who spend a grand on a coat . My ds’s was £25, and he is happy

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 20/11/2018 19:51

£1k for a child’s jacket just conjures up one word for me... consumerism.... Suckers, You can’t buy love, it’s just a coat. These jackets were made for extreme weather conditions and animals are used. But As long as the kids are happy eh?

ILoveAutum · 20/11/2018 19:52

EXCELLENT

Great news.

Now if only they’d ban them making them too 😥

TheCraicDealer · 20/11/2018 19:53

Could you imagine some angry parent being on the phone because Johnny has lost his £1k coat?

I would imagine that's precisely what's happened (or stolen/damaged) one too many times and they've just had enough of it. I think the type of parent who decides that a 1K coat is appropriate schoolwear anywhere other than inside the arctic circle is precisely the type of person who is unlikely to accept that it's not the headmaster's fault if it gets lost/damaged/stolen whilst their child is in school.

Charolais · 20/11/2018 19:53

This is just awful. We have coyotes here and they are lovely creatures. They are meant to be here.

I can't stand the idea of them getting killed and skinned so some shallow show-off can wear them on their empty fucking heads;

Coyote fur trim hood enhances warmth by blocking winds off the face

BertrandRussell · 20/11/2018 19:53

Did someone really use the expression "wealth shaming"? Grin

GreenDinosaur · 20/11/2018 19:53

All our secondary school kids just seem to wear blazers all year round, not sure I've ever seen one in a coat in term time.
They boil in summer and freeze in winter. I'm all for school uniform but they take it too far these days imo.

Loonoon · 20/11/2018 19:55

I don’t have a problem with goose down or coyote fur, thats a moral choice like whether or not to eat meat and people make their own minds up. I do think it’s obscene to spend that sort of money on a coat for a teenager who will grow out of it and/or wreck it very quickly. It also creates a very visible us and them financial divide in the school community. As PP have said if someone can afford to buy one in the first place squeezing out another £20 for an anorak from Primark won’t break them.

£800 coats have as much place in school as diamond earrings, Jimmy Choos, Mulberry bags or £1300 phones. They are all things that adults might like and aspire to but IMO I don’t think they are appropriate for a school environment.
