That's totally what's happened.

It's constant whinging from parents. Honestly unless you have 1k to burn why on earth would you send them into school in one of those coats.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/11/2018 19:58

So a quick Google tells me they are stuffed with Hutterite goose down and use wool from sheep who have not been subjected to mulesing. Mulesing looks pretty horrid to be honest; I had no idea that was done to lambs Sad

HauntedPencil · 20/11/2018 19:58

My sympathy for the parents levels are kind of low on this one.

calpop · 20/11/2018 19:58

Out of interest, I would never buy one, are we sure these kids are all wearing genuine CG coats? Can yo get good fakes somewhere? I know a family of 5 kids and all 7 are wearing one this winter - I can't believe they have spent 7K on coats?

calpop · 20/11/2018 20:01

I just asked teenage ds who says you can get them for 70 quid on Ebay. They look pretty realistic to me. God know what they are made of.

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 20:02

Okay so my DD wears a moncler coat to school, it was our choice to buy it and I don't think I would abide if the school tried to ban them. The logo is small and inoffensive and I personally think they're nice and warm. I can't see what business it is of the school how much we spend on her coat

fortifiedwithtea · 20/11/2018 20:02

I would hope the ban is for ethical reasons. I have friends who are very into animal rights. Meaning I had to see an image of a wolf in agony caught by its paw in a trap. Alleging the hoods are trimmed with real wolf fur..

MrsJayy · 20/11/2018 20:04

Bugger me the cheapest is £800ishShock for a coat well done that school bloody more money than sense if any parent pays that for a frigging anorak

calpop · 20/11/2018 20:04

How much was it Pinkky?

I think the schools are worried about muggings.

wirralsquirral · 20/11/2018 20:05

They are trimmed with coyote fur. Their website tells you about the ethical standards they are committed to. Why are they any different - from an ethical standard -to Ugg boots?

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 20:05

Hers was around £650, you'll find that the £800+ are in the adult range

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 20:06

Moncler use fox fur, Canada goose use coyote

calpop · 20/11/2018 20:07

I'm not judging Pinkky as I spend way more than that on school fees, but what would you do if she left it on the bus or train? Or used it as a goal post, thinking of my own children Angry.

MrsJayy · 20/11/2018 20:08

Tbf a 14yr old is more than likely in adult sizes so paying £800+ for a coat

EmeraldShamrock · 20/11/2018 20:09

They are expensive if they get stolen.
They seem to be a big favourite for teens this year. My 14yo nephew is getting one. I would be concerned with muggings etc plus I couldn't afford one.
Lots of parents around here can't afford one but will get in debt for it.

JoyceTempleSavage · 20/11/2018 20:10

I think the schools are worried about muggings

From the bbc article I read it was the wealth divide issue driving the ban

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 20:10

Momcler kids go up to a 14 years and Canada goose up to 18 years. Luckily she looks after her things well so I don't feel I have to worry about that, she takes care of her belongings whether they were cheap or expensive.

calpop · 20/11/2018 20:14

*I think the schools are worried about muggings

i suspect most of them are in fake ones - similar to a few years ago when all the girls suddenly had MK handbags instead of rucksacks. I don't see how the schools can tell if they're real or not.

Sexnotgender · 20/11/2018 20:15

Most likely fakes.

Nutkins24 · 20/11/2018 20:17

I cannot believe people spend this kind of money on a coat for a teen. If I could guarantee it would last for the literally the rest of their lives maybe 500/600 doesn’t seem so bad but in truth it’s a fashion item, in a few years time something else will be the ‘must have’. Teens are far to fickle in their tastes. Tbh it stinks. All these young people who have barely done a days work yet and probably have no idea about money/budgeting/real life being indulged like this is quite disgusting. Good on the school.

LEMtheoriginal · 20/11/2018 20:17

I have just bought dd's school coat - £35 from tesco Grin she loves it

MrsJayy · 20/11/2018 20:18

Still £600 is a lot of money for many parents for an anorak for school and if 1 has 1 they all want 1 .

Unicornandbows · 20/11/2018 20:18

I remember back in my day it was Jane Norman clothing and river island and I used to think that was the most expensive.. Such naivity

Pinkyyy · 20/11/2018 20:18

I imagine a lot of them wear fakes too, I personally don't support the buying of fake stuff because they're usually from very unethical places. However I suppose some parents would rather they wear a fake to school incase it gets ruined/stolen

Micke · 20/11/2018 20:20

My kid loses 3 coats a year (dyspraxic, so something we live with - if he's thrown off routine, stuff gets lost), so the idea of spending that much on a coat is already crazy.

Hell, I doubt I'd spend that much on a coat for me (I think I've gone up to 300.. for a woollen dress coat that will last for many years).

I'm normally against all this coat regulation I see (black coats for schoool kids for instance is mad. Have them wear bright, reflective stuff), but I can see why a) they wouldn't want to risk accepting liability for this stuff, and b) why they'd want to enforce some kind of standards around cost of coats.

So I find myself caught between common sense and principles.

On the whole, I think that I agree with so many others here - if you can afford to spend that on a coat, you can afford a cheap one for school.
