I posted here before about my DS wierd bruise under his armpit went to a n e and they checked him over no problems. Got a call of the gp today asking us to go in checked him over and she's not happy with it. we've got to get a blood test done and going to the main hospital 112 miles away. They are going to be checking for leukaemia and blood disorders. I'm fucking shitting it. Thinking the worst of the worse. Waiting on phone call to tell us when to go hopefully today possibly tomorrow....

Offering a hand to hold. I've been where you are several times and it's always been something not serious. I know it's scary but you have really good chances of it being fine.

percheron67 · 20/11/2018 14:55

Shall be thinking of you.

Lovemusic33 · 20/11/2018 15:00

Offering a hand hold. Had something similar with dd1 when she was 4 or 5, she had a weird looking mark near her arm pit and was slightly unwell, went to out of hours to get her checked over and the doctor started talking about urgent blood tests, told me to call my GP next day to sort bloods, got dd home and it turned out she had caused the bruise herself by giving herself a love bite (she’s double jointed so can reach odd places). I hope your ds’s bruise turns out to be something of nothing like my dd’s.

NotSoThinLizzy · 20/11/2018 15:07

It's just a bit of a pain as we have to travel 2 and a half hours to get there too. So much waiting.... I don't like waiting

It's unfortunate the GP is making you go that distance juts for a blood test- seems odd they can't do it and then refer you on if required. I didn't see your original post- but sounds as if you just have a very overcatious GP. Never a bad thing- means the pick things up, but also means you can have a fair amount of stress unnecessarily. Are you just going for pathology, or is there an actual appointment at this hospital to see someone afterwards? If it's juts pathology and then back for results a different day- I'd say not much point in you both going. If they are going to tell you the results same day, then he should be there.

NotSoThinLizzy · 20/11/2018 15:14

It's results same day and may be overnight job because we live "so" far away. Their words not mine.

OP posts:
Lovemusic33 · 20/11/2018 15:15

I’m guessing they are sending you there so you can get the Renaults the same day (save you worrying any longer), bloods taken by a gp can take a week for resaults to come back.

inthewords · 20/11/2018 15:16

Handhold for you, OP. I can't imagine how worrying that must be. Thanks

NotSoThinLizzy · 20/11/2018 15:21

The gp said that they want to check him over and she asked them of they could do the blood test as she's not confidant enough to do it. God I need a drink 😂

OP posts:
NotSoThinLizzy · 20/11/2018 15:21

Hosp originally asked her to do it.

OP posts:
CheshireChat · 20/11/2018 15:27

I wonder if your GP said that because she wants the results sooner.

BettyDuMonde · 20/11/2018 15:29

Take some emergency overnight stuff, phone charger etc - if they do find anything they likely won’t let you home until treatment begins.

Leukaemia is a very scary word but if it is that then take comfort in the fact that the long term prognosis is brilliant and you will have lots and lots of support to get your son through the treatment.
Hopefully it will be nothing of note.

(My daughter was recently diagnosed with a rare auto immune disease that is treated by haemotology/oncology consultants and so is on the same ward as the Leukaemia kids - it’s like having an enormous new family)

Please keep us updated!

dontknowwhattodo80 · 20/11/2018 15:30

Here with a handhold xx

maddening · 20/11/2018 15:34

Good luck op, hoping for fast positive results xx

auberbene · 20/11/2018 15:34

I'm here too, OP. You'll be in my thoughts.

ThanksWine!

SD1978 · 20/11/2018 15:36

So the positive is that the hospital doesn't 'need' to do the bloods- the GP just isn't confident to do so. Bloods from the hospital will be back quicker- which is obviously what the GP IS pushing for. ED didn't see a need for further hospital involvement, which is also positive. So there are a lot of positives. An emergency dept that didn't feel he was an emergency or required the blood tests as an emergency (otherwise they would have done them) and a GP who likes to be cautious. Blood tests done by the GP, if they show something acute, would be acted on straight away- they wouldn't take a week, but they want you to get the reassurance you need quicker. I'd say all that is good and should be hopefully less stressful.

LondonMummy1987 · 20/11/2018 15:48

Sending lots of love and prayers for you. x

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 20/11/2018 15:54

Fingers crossed for your ds. Better to be over cautious than miss something.

monstertufts · 20/11/2018 15:59

Sending hugs, OP. GPs can be very cautious with children. My GP referred my daughter to the Special Care Baby Unit when she was 5 days old because she was vomiting blood ... turned out to be from me (oh the joys of learning to breastfeed) but that was a mad dash for the hospital that put grey hairs on my head. I hope this will be a panic over nothing for you too!

iVampire · 20/11/2018 16:29

Shall I offer a different body part? Have a shoulder to lean on Cake

Waiting for test results is scary. It’s often the worst bit. Try to hold the thought that getting tested is all about establishing what is going on (and plenty of previous posters have said there are non-alarming causes).

Referring to haematology means the blood tests can be processed immediately (can be as quick as 20-30 minutes) and reviewed by the specialists. They can then advise on potential diagnoses and what further tests might be needed (and they might be done then and there, but ones from which they have to grow the cells to run the tests can take 7-14 days for results)

For context, I have leukaemia diagnosed last autumn from a blood test, from which they could be sure which type I had. Further tests established that I had the feature which meant they expected I would respond well to treatment. I won’t band on about it now, but just remember I’m here and you can ask me anything if you get shit news. But I really hope you don’t.

Final point DON’T GOOGLE! Yes, I know that’s close to asking the impossible but thevtrastmentx and outlooks got many blood cancers have been transformed in recent years and there’s still a lot of the outdated and much scarier stuff out there and it won’t help anything if you chance on that.

NewMinouMinou · 20/11/2018 16:35

Right here OP.
I’m holding both of your hands so that you have no choice but to follow iVampire’s advice to NOT GOOGLE!

NewMinouMinou · 20/11/2018 16:40

IVampire has given you some other great advice as well.

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 20/11/2018 16:43

A&E saw DS2 twice before I googled his symptoms and ‘diagnosed’ him myself.

They weren’t concerned by a petechial rash or horrific bruising so it must be quite common. They said it was a viral rash (he’d just had chicken pox and had a viral tummy bug too). 111 offered an ambulance on both occasions suspecting meningitis and then scepticaemia.

Has he been ill lately?

FWIW I went though it all without DH and it was hard. I wish he’d been there. Having to be on the ward with DS2 without a break was difficult. Although luckily they fed me as a BF mum!

Take loads of money, chargers, plugs, food, entertainment. Our rush bloods took 12 hours. They had to repeat them due to ‘errors’. They were right first time but the results were so ‘wrong’ they didn’t believe them.

For your OH- It’s left long-term scars having been though it alone. DH had no choice and moved mountains to get back when he could.

NotSoThinLizzy · 20/11/2018 16:48

Thank you all so much. They still havnt phoned said they would in the afternoon. I don't know what I should do
