Potty training 2.5 yr old Dd. I hate the word ‘panties’ but ‘knickers’ seems age-inappropriate and ‘underwear’ too generic. Are there any better words out there?

They're called "undies", "under-grundies" or "grundies" in our house.

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/11/2018 04:35

Panties sound grubby in a sexual way. Knickers or pants for a girl. Dd uses this interchangeably.

Sashkin · 20/11/2018 04:47

“Panties” is definitely sexual. I just have this horrible mental image of an American voice mumbling “wet panties! wet panties!” Envy. I’m not sure where I’m half remembering that from, maybe a comedy sketch, but I can’t unhear it I’m afraid.

If you can’t use pants, how about undies?

Scrumptiousbears · 20/11/2018 04:56

We used knickers but Knick Knick's have king of evolved from that 😂

AdoreTheBeach · 20/11/2018 05:16

We always said undies. (I’m not native British though).

ImogenTubbs · 20/11/2018 05:58

Panties is American.

We use knickers or pants in this house. Or knicky knocky noo nahs.

PositiveVibez · 20/11/2018 06:07

Knickers here for me and our daughter.

Pants are definitely outerwear also. Means the same as trousers. Is it regional? I'm north west.

Donthugmeimscared · 20/11/2018 06:12

Pants - boys knickers - girls. My lot do call them pantyloons though.

I also thought it was only America that said pants for trousers/jeans. I have also never heard the word apparel before so you learn something new every day.

ifeelsoextraordinary · 20/11/2018 06:23

My American colleague once said “don’t get your panties in a bunch” when another colleague was getting worked up about something stupid.

I was totally taken aback! Then I figured out she was basically saying “don’t get your knickers in a knot”.

When I told her the british equivalent she was equally taken aback. Both thought the other sounded quite rude, when in our own environments, they were just one of those sayings that don’t mean much.

Upsy1981 · 20/11/2018 06:35

Knickers for females. Undies or Boxers for males depending on the style. I work with young children so I have heard lots of different children referring to their clothing over the years and these seem to be the words they use day to day.

liquidrevolution · 20/11/2018 06:38

Pants. I'm southern england with Irish parents. I think they were knickers when i was young but we use pants for DD.

Because Pantasaurus wears pants. We sing the song getting dressed.

purple8pig · 20/11/2018 06:39

Same round here that pants are trousers/leggings /jeans

In our house underpants for boys and knickers for girls

Blondebakingmumma · 20/11/2018 06:43

Underpants or knickers

Bouchie · 20/11/2018 06:55

we have pants as trousers (north west) so say knickers and underpants. PS it was the Americans that took the word from us not visa versa!

Oblomov18 · 20/11/2018 06:59

Hate the word 'panties'. It makes me cringe.

Pants for me.
Boxers for Dh and ds's - no matter if it is actually boxers or trunks or whatever they're called these days!

eurochick · 20/11/2018 07:03

My Irish mil uses pants the American rather than English way too.

Like most on this thread, panties sounds pervy to my ear. We use pants.

picklemepopcorn · 20/11/2018 07:05

DH calls his 'gruns'. So sexy...Hmm

BitOutOfPractice · 20/11/2018 07:06

Am I the only one who assumed this is a underwear troll?

PinkFluffyFairy · 20/11/2018 07:06

Pants for all here too.

AtSea1979 · 20/11/2018 07:10

We call trousers pants round here

Drivenmad80 · 20/11/2018 07:22

I've lived in several parts of England North, South and West, my DM was from Liverpool and DF from North East, and I've never heard trousers referred to as pants.

Nenic · 20/11/2018 07:35

I’m in the North East and I’ve never heard pants for trousers. Never heard anyone say it apart from Americans.

Nenic · 20/11/2018 07:36

And I’ve lived all over the uk.
