Potty training 2.5 yr old Dd. I hate the word ‘panties’ but ‘knickers’ seems age-inappropriate and ‘underwear’ too generic. Are there any better words out there?

Undies

Pants are outerwear here too.

zingally · 20/11/2018 07:37

Knickers or pants. Panties is an American-ism, and a bit porny, IMO.

Knickers for girls... Pants are boys and girls.

ShatnersBassoon · 20/11/2018 07:39

Pants for trousers really isn't unusual in the UK. I've heard it in the NE and NW, particularly used by older generations.

MaryShelley1818 · 20/11/2018 07:41

Yep I’m in the North East too and trousers are often pants!

We say pants for boys underwear and knickers for girls.

RTFT · 20/11/2018 07:43

To the poster who said Knicks, just no. Almost as bad as panties 🤮

Cheeeeislifenow · 20/11/2018 07:48

I'm Irish, pants are jeans etc,
Underpants are for boys..we call them undies or thunder pants here. Girls are knickers.
Panties is one of my most hated words along with the words succulent and moist... The three of those words not even together make me vom. Together they are hideous.

notacooldad · 20/11/2018 07:50

Am I the only one who assumed this is a underwear troll?
Troll or not it's quite interesting and and amusing to see people's opinion on what to call a pair of knickers !!

Holidayshopping · 20/11/2018 07:54

Panties is one of my most hated words along with the words succulent and moist...

Now, I’m with you on moist and panties, however, I rather like succulent Grin. Chafe is definitely on my list though!

DorothyLNaySayers · 20/11/2018 07:57

I’m not a troll, thank you very much.

Although now I’ve realised the association most people here have with the p word, I can see how you would think that. Bunch of bloody pervs. ShockGrin

Undies here, for girls and boys.

I find knickers as bad as panties.

M&S's 'fancy little knickers' makes me cringe so hard.

WilyMinx · 20/11/2018 08:13

As a child, it was knickers and pants, and as an adult, they're all just undies. I refer them as undies to my 6-year-old son as well.

Knittink · 20/11/2018 08:13

Knickers for girls, pants for boys (or girls). Trousers does not mean a particular type of legwear to me, it's pretty generic. I never use 'pants' to mean trousers - that's either Anerican usage or from certain places in the UK. I'm a southerner but hear it a lot where I now live (NW England), mostly from kids rather than adults.

PaulMorel · 20/11/2018 08:20

Sounds weird but this is how I call it to my children "Undie Pants"

ScarletChina · 20/11/2018 08:28

Why is there different words for boys and girls underpants? Aussie here, we say undies.

ShakespearesSisters · 20/11/2018 08:28

Pants

dontyouforgetaboutme · 20/11/2018 08:31

Pants or most often knick knocks

NoParticularPattern · 20/11/2018 08:35

I call them all pants, sometimes knickers for mine but usually pants. DH calls his boxers (even though they actually aren’t!!). Not sure what he’d call mine- knickers probably. Bottom half are trousers (or bottoms but I feel like bottoms = pyjamas a bit really). Jeans, leggings etc if I’m being specific.

We’re yorkshire

sosmooth · 20/11/2018 08:36

I'm from the North West and pants means any outerwear that covers your legs.
we say boxers or knickers or just underwear here

Cheeeeislifenow · 20/11/2018 08:37

Op why are we pervs?

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 20/11/2018 08:39

Underwear for all, occasionally undies.
But, if you're being specific, men and boys wear pants, women and girls wear knickers. These are worn under trouser, leggings, trackys, whatever.

ApplesinmyPocket · 20/11/2018 08:41

"No one female says panties, only pervy Americans"

I watch a couple of US family vlogs (god help me Grin) and perfectly normal mothers talk about 'panties' in a definitely non-pervy way. Seems a natural word to use if, like Americans, you generally use 'pants' for leg outerwear - a diminutive for the smaller leg-and-bum wear that goes under the outer leg-and-bum covers.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 20/11/2018 08:43

Undergonks.
A kidism by my eldest which stuck and has spread to furthest reaches of our extended family!

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 20/11/2018 08:44

Quite a few of my northern friends say "pants" for trousers.

Firesuit · 20/11/2018 08:59

I've skipped to the end of the thread. I gather "pants" is popular, but like OP, that is a word I'd use for trousers. For me when growing up the standard words everyone used were "underpants" for boy and "panties" for girls, so the hatred for the latter here came as a surprise to me. Though I must have guessed it was the wrong word in the UK, as I've always used "knickers" with DD.

Anyway that's irrelevant, taking inspiration from another poster and consulting M&S web site, it's "knickers" for girls and "underpants" for boys.

DorothyLNaySayers · 20/11/2018 09:01

Op why are we pervs?

I'm sure I don't know. Maybe you were born that way, maybe you were corrupted at a young age. I think that's something you should probably work through with a therapist, though, rather than asking random people on the Internet.
