to think little mix preaching body positivity is questionable

i am all for the message of body positivity in women and i know there is always something we generally dont like or would change, but i watched little mix on the beeb saturday night and wondered what had happened to the one that had come in for some stick originally. (i thought she looked fine but you watch these groups get groomed and moulded and styled into the new cheryl coles) anyway i thought they must have replaced "jesy" .

nope. she has however morphed into a shadow of former self in that she is completely unrecognisable. she must have had some major surgery to actually look like a totally different person.

now ok it happens. and its up to her i guess.
but then i read today about the song on their new album promoting body positivity and image and loving what you have etc and thought hang on a minute Confused

is it not a bit rich coming from a group who have morphed into the usual with one morphing into looking like a whole other person completely clearly with the help of a ton of plastic surgery?

maybe iabu but thank god my DD is an adult if thats the message girls are getting.
yeah be positive and love yourself but only if you haven't got a few million in the bank to change it. disappointing.

She looks like she has lost a lot of weight, changed her hair and her jawline looks different. My ds's face was very much changed by wearing braces - his jawline was moved and it made a massive difference. She looks great anyway - good for her.

Ollivander84 · 19/11/2018 16:18

I get what you mean - it's complicated! The whole body positivity thing has a lot of people who think if you lose weight, you are going against the whole ethos
Whereas to me that doesn't matter, and I support health/fitness at any size and think anyone of any size should be encouraged and never judged for exercising and not feel ashamed going to the doctor etc. But I can't support someone who is unable to get off the floor due to their weight promoting themselves as healthy

I'm all for embracing ageing etc but I've had Botox for lines from chronic/acute pain

Figgygal · 19/11/2018 16:23

Such a shame for her she was so pretty And now she looks like a plastic mess.

Never understood the rationale for prancing around in these tiny outfits when the majority of their fans are young girls . Ah but they're empowered to just because they want to why don't they have a think about why they want to look like that?!?

Cleojinx · 19/11/2018 16:42

I think the difficulty is that for the non-celebrity woman, your insecurities are mainly. hopefully going to be noticed and picked at by yourself. You may be unlucky enough to receive a couple of nasty comments here and there or, for young girls, god forbid you experience the cruelty of bullying at school.

For celebrities, they have insecurities that are plastered all over the world for everyone to comment on and unfortunately, many many people do. The comments Jesy has received are horrific. It must be relentless day in and day out. Obviously it comes with the job but I imagine you can't appreciate the magnitude of it before you experience it and it's bound to have an awful effect on your mental health/confidence.

It's easier to accept why someone like Jesy would feel the need to have plastic surgery. A shame because she didn't need it but again unless she is advocating it I don't see the issue. 3/4 of the group are natural and body positivity is a good message for young girls who may be being bullied or feeling insecure.

BitchQueen90 · 19/11/2018 16:50

They haven't all had surgery though. What a ridiculous assumption. I'm 28 and I don't look the same as I did when I was 17/18!

Jesy might have had fillers but she has lost a lot of weight and over lines her lips drastically so she is bound to look different.

I can't see any drastic changes on any of the others. Jade and Leigh Anne in particular are very vocal about embracing their small boobs. None of them have had crazy body altering surgery like the Kardashians and a lot of reality stars.

BitchQueen90 · 19/11/2018 16:55

And also, being body positive and loving yourself doesn't mean that you have to go around with no make up on 24/7. You can enjoy wearing and experimenting with make up while still embracing yourself without it. That's not hypocritical.

Chardeemacdennis1 · 19/11/2018 17:30

what i find questionable is a group of women telling us all how we should feel comfortable in our skins and without makeup while wearing a ton of it and having had very very obvious plastic surgery

I've had a nose job, I also wear make up ( although not alot by current standards) and watch my figure.

Do you think it will be hypocritical of me to teach my daughter to be body positive. Of course not. Maybe its sad that I couldn't love my face or have confidence in my looks without surgery, but that doesn't mean I can't teach my daughter to love herself even if she has the same nose as did.

TheWiseWomansFear · 19/11/2018 17:46

'Strip' is shit - I can't understand what perry is saying at the beginning, she's putting on a really unnatural RNB American accent...

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 19/11/2018 18:31

Loving all the they’re not role models to your children, you are brigade. We all loved to look like our favourite pop and film stars when I was young. I don’t remember anyone ever admitting to wanting to look like their mum. Grin

TheHandmaidsTail · 19/11/2018 18:59

Think it says a lot that my 7yo dd was convinced they were a tribute band and not the real little mix. She knew this because none of them were Jesy Shock

Deffo had a shit load of work, and such a shame as she had such a definite look before.

ForalltheSaints · 19/11/2018 19:01

Little Mix are not role models in my view. Women in comedy, or women who write their own songs and/or play own instruments are far better as role models in my view. They are manufactured and until recently managed by a man.

MyHairNeedsASnip · 19/11/2018 19:10

They're just so bloody young and having all that done to themselves. I looked for Jesy the other day when they were on TV because she was my 'favourite' I suppose, not that I'm particularly in to them, but she was strikingly different. Took me a while to realise which one was her.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for making yourself feel great. I've had botox a few times but I'm pushing 40, I'm not in my 20's. I suppose with age comes clarity about how fabulous it was to be in your 20's, all fresh faced and youthful. I suppose it makes me feel a bit meh about what pressure my own daughter has in store for her.

MyHairNeedsASnip · 19/11/2018 19:10

To many supposes there Grin

coppercolouredtop · 19/11/2018 19:16

If it was pj Harvey telling me to be happy with what I have fine.

Not a reshaped reschulptured blow up dolly who doesn't follow her own advice.

Chardeemacdennis1 Sorry but that makes no sense at all. If my mum was telling me to be happy with my face when she couldn’t even accept it herself... I’d have issues to say the least

BathFullOfEels · 19/11/2018 19:21

chardeem you absolutely can’t expect your dd to love her nose when you underwent surgery because you hated yours so much.

chillpizza · 19/11/2018 19:37

This is why my children don’t listen to pop Grin its all over sexualised crap. There was a whole song with video and it got played in the radio “let talk about sex baby” “do it in the shower pussy power” yeah no.

PookieDo · 19/11/2018 19:57

My DC have grown up with X factor types around them (and were big fans) neither of my DD’s dress like this or even want to. One doesn’t wear make up at all. Being a fan of someone’s music doesn’t mean you will copy them because that is down you to as parents - my teen DD’s know the difference between things for children and things for adults and have no desire to dress like a 27 year old woman when they are 15. That’s my job. Who buys 15yo girls these outfits shoes and make up? PARENTS. Just because your child may want something doesn’t mean you let them have it as LM are doing it Hmm. When they leave home they will make their own choices

BUT I agree with the posters saying this ‘message’ is just so annoying. It’s not body positivity, it is marketing and makes them a lot of money. I think their generation does seem to believe this load of shit, LM, Kardashian’s ‘loving yourself’ whilst undergoing painful surgery or cosmetic procedures to make yourself into a perfect version of yourself. It’s bloody weird and it’s sad. This is a fashion look (the lips) and will not last forever. Sadly I think the legacy left behind will continue to be always working to try to make a better version of yourself and along with the effects of porn addiction it is harmful on young minds once they get into their 20’s and have their own money, girls are encouraged by social media to want to invest in their looks not their education, career or futures being sold the dream it will ‘let you live your best life’. LM are highly paid pop stars - this is their job to look this way. It’s not realistic and I think the most vulnerable are the young 20’s women who feel pressure not to get old, have this fashion look but will struggle on a non millionaire budget so always feel like they have failed

PookieDo · 19/11/2018 19:59

I say this as aged 21 I was way more influenced by fashion and celebrities - everyone wanted the whole All Saints look and I got into a huge amount of River Island store card debt trying to achieve it! I wouldn’t want to be 22 again I tell you Sad

DwangelaForever · 19/11/2018 20:32

Awk fs people catch a grip about them, yes when they first came out the majority of their fans were young girls but they're not young girls and you can't expect them to stay young forever. They're women not girls** and the same people on here complaining about what they're wearing and how they shouldn't be preaching body positivity are the same people protesting against the woman's underwear being used against her in a rape trial. Women can't win from men or women ffs. Give them a break.

DwangelaForever · 19/11/2018 20:36

@ForalltheSaints little mix co-write their own songs

coppercolouredtop · 19/11/2018 20:44

So I should be fine with a woman who has had tons of plastic surgery telli gmy dd it think positive about her looks.

Oooookkkk

I assume your children are too young to pay much attention to pop music any way

BitchQueen90 · 19/11/2018 20:47

@ForalltheSaints on their latest album Jade has written or co written at least half of the songs, and the rest of the band have contributed to some of them. They also directed their latest video. They probably didn't at the beginning of their career but they want more creative control now which is one of the reasons for their split from Syco.

coppercolouredtop · 19/11/2018 20:47

Mine?

Mine are 26 and 21. But sensible thank god.
