to think little mix preaching body positivity is questionable

i am all for the message of body positivity in women and i know there is always something we generally dont like or would change, but i watched little mix on the beeb saturday night and wondered what had happened to the one that had come in for some stick originally. (i thought she looked fine but you watch these groups get groomed and moulded and styled into the new cheryl coles) anyway i thought they must have replaced "jesy" .

nope. she has however morphed into a shadow of former self in that she is completely unrecognisable. she must have had some major surgery to actually look like a totally different person.

now ok it happens. and its up to her i guess.
but then i read today about the song on their new album promoting body positivity and image and loving what you have etc and thought hang on a minute Confused

is it not a bit rich coming from a group who have morphed into the usual with one morphing into looking like a whole other person completely clearly with the help of a ton of plastic surgery?

maybe iabu but thank god my DD is an adult if thats the message girls are getting.
yeah be positive and love yourself but only if you haven't got a few million in the bank to change it. disappointing.

@Beaverhausen If you want your children to have role models, be a role model. Little Mix don't need to okay their outfits with you because you're terrified that your daughter might want to wear hotpants one day.

You're the parent here. If you have concerns about how your daughter dresses or what her moral values are, take control of that yourself.

'As a mother i should have the right to say what is acceptable and what is not acceptable' - no love, you had a right to chose what your child watches and reads in your own home. That's it. The world doesn't revolve around your kids.

AngeloMysterioso · 19/11/2018 14:53

As a mother i should have the right to say what is acceptable and what is not acceptable and I do not find half naked men and women being shown to my 11 year old daughter writhing around sexually and singing songs about sex etc as acceptable

They’re not being shown to your daughter. If your daughter is seeing them then it’s because you’re allowing her to.

And why shouldn’t 25-27 year old women sing about sex?

Thankyounext · 19/11/2018 14:56

If they’re on prime time tv eg X factor supposedly aimed at families, it is hard to avoid eg Cheryl in her thigh high boots cavorting with male dancers was verging on inappropriate for my 11 year old dd.

coppercolouredtop · 19/11/2018 15:05

to clarify - im not slut shaming or any kind of shaming! what i find questionable is a group of women telling us all how we should feel comfortable in our skins and without makeup while wearing a ton of it and having had very very obvious plastic surgery to transform at least one of them into a totally different looking person and beyond recognition. its hypocrisy!

It's easy to be "body positive" when you get paid millions of pounds to keep slim enough to squeeze into lingerie, and fit enough to dance around on a stage for a few hours at a time. Oh, and maybe sing into the autotune machine a bit or lipsync while dancing.

I mean, let's be real here for a second, how fast would one of them get dropped from the lineup if they put on 4 stone?

I never really understand why Little Mix get stuck because "they shouldn't dress the way that they do with their target market being kids". Their target market isn't young kids anymore and hasn't been for a few years. The label have geared them towards teens and young adults as they are the ones buying music.

Also, they were 17-19 when they won X Factor, they're now 25-27. A lot of their fans from back then will be young adults now.

When I grew up I was obsessed with music and videos. Their was Britney Spears with barely anything on, Christina Aguilera's Dirrrty video and so on. Music and pop stars have been sexualised for years. As much as I grew up wanting to be a pop star, I can honestly say I never walked round with barely any clothes on nor did I want to. Media definitely has an impression on kids but it always has. It doesn't mean your little girls are going to walk around with leotards on unless you let them.

AngeloMysterioso · 19/11/2018 15:20

I mean, let's be real here for a second, how fast would one of them get dropped from the lineup if they put on 4 stone?

Honestly, I don't think the other girls would allow it.

BitchQueen90 · 19/11/2018 15:21

I love LM.

It's not up to celebrities to be role models for our children, it's up to us as parents to be role models for our children. Why do they have to be "role models" for OTHER PEOPLE'S children? Hmm

SoupDragon · 19/11/2018 15:22

It's impossible to tell what her bone structure is in your "before" photo as she was significantly fatter then.

SoupDragon · 19/11/2018 15:24

I actually think her chin is the same shape if you remove the chubbiness around it.

EwItsAHooman · 19/11/2018 15:26

As a mother i should have the right to say what is acceptable and what is not acceptable and I do not find half naked men and women being shown to my 11 year old daughter writhing around sexually and singing songs about sex etc as acceptable.

The onus is on parents to be aware of what their child is viewing, watching, and listening to and filter content as appropriate. If you don't want your child watching suggestive videos or looking at Instagram then adjust your parental control, monitor what content they're viewing online, and talk with them about what - in your view - is/isn't appropriate. It's not down to the artist to censor their work just in case some children should happen to view it, that's why we have age ratings and appropriate content warnings on media content.

MargoLovebutter · 19/11/2018 15:35

If the body positive message is supposed to be about accepting yourself as you are and being happy with that, then I would agree Little Mix are not in the best place to preach that message.

I really struggle with what is the right message about clothes for woman. On the one hand, I think fuck it, any woman should be able to wear exactly what she wants and not get labelled a slut, a blue-stocking or anything else. On the other hand, I think wearing really exposing outfits suggests a lack of self-respect and desperate desire to be admired/wanted by men which isn't healthy and yet I would still defend that woman's right to wear those clothes. Does my head in everytime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 19/11/2018 15:35

She's def had her top lip filled

BitchQueen90 · 19/11/2018 15:38

@Beaverhausen "as a mother" you should be the one teaching your children what is and is not acceptable, not expecting 20 something celebrities to take on that responsibility. They are YOUR children.

coppercolouredtop · 19/11/2018 15:40

I'm not bothered how they dress.

What's getting my goat is them saying be happy with how you are while systematically altering every single natural thing about themselves with surgery.

OP posts:
NotACleverName · 19/11/2018 15:42

“As a mother...” sorry but 🤣🤣🤣

“As a mother” the onus is on YOU to teach your child what is acceptable and what isn’t. It’s not to expect grown, twenty-something women to act as role models to your kid.

Cleojinx · 19/11/2018 15:44

I don't think any of them have had surgery bar Jesy though she definitely has. The thing is, she's happy with herself now. She made the choice to have surgery and isn't advocating it but it's obviously what made her happy.

I do feel sorry for her because the poor girl is damned if she does and damned if she doesn't. She was absolutely dogged for her appearance (which I've never really understood as always found her to be pretty to be honest!) which has gotten to her and she has had some surgery. She will now undoubtably get stick from some people for having surgery.

As long as she isn't advocating surgery I don't see the issue. She wanted to have surgery so she did and now she's happy in her own skin. Body positivity is still a great message for young girls to be receiving nowadays and 3/4's of them are natural.

Ollivander84 · 19/11/2018 15:47

I model art nude. So I effectively pose naked. I'm not doing it to be any example to someone, I'm an adult and making my own decisions. I'm also not a slut Hmm and I wear less to model than little mix do to perform in!
Yes, I support body positivity but not the total body positivity movement, however it is so nice when I get messages saying seeing me has made other women feel they can wear a dress or nice underwear or do a photoshoot

Screaminginsidemeagain · 19/11/2018 15:47

I think they are vile. Their fan base is tween girls and their videos are aimed at dirty old men or teenage boys. Over sexy and porn like.

Dahlietta · 19/11/2018 16:01

YANBU. I watched the series of X Factor that they were on, but I don't recognise any of them any more!

Pinkblanket · 19/11/2018 16:03

I'd rather teach my girls that walking round half naked doesn't make you slutty and nor does it mean you are asking for it. If LM want to walk round in hot pants and a bra then they should be able to, without fear of ridicule or harassment.

coppercolouredtop · 19/11/2018 16:07

Ffs I'm not even questioning them wearing fuck all, that's their prerogative.

What I AM saying is they are massive hypocrites in telling us all to live our bodies and accept ourselves and not wear make up cos we should live what's underneath while transforming at least one of the bad into a whole other person with fillers and surgery. That's my point.

@Screaminginsidemeagain Why does a man have to be 'dirty' and 'old' if he enjoys how a woman looks in a video? Sounds a bit puritanical...

coppercolouredtop · 19/11/2018 16:10

*love not live! Grr
