to think little mix preaching body positivity is questionable

i am all for the message of body positivity in women and i know there is always something we generally dont like or would change, but i watched little mix on the beeb saturday night and wondered what had happened to the one that had come in for some stick originally. (i thought she looked fine but you watch these groups get groomed and moulded and styled into the new cheryl coles) anyway i thought they must have replaced "jesy" .

nope. she has however morphed into a shadow of former self in that she is completely unrecognisable. she must have had some major surgery to actually look like a totally different person.

now ok it happens. and its up to her i guess.
but then i read today about the song on their new album promoting body positivity and image and loving what you have etc and thought hang on a minute Confused

is it not a bit rich coming from a group who have morphed into the usual with one morphing into looking like a whole other person completely clearly with the help of a ton of plastic surgery?

maybe iabu but thank god my DD is an adult if thats the message girls are getting.
yeah be positive and love yourself but only if you haven't got a few million in the bank to change it. disappointing.

Jesy has (or used to have) a great sarcastic lip curl and eye-roll look, that's something I always liked about her. I hope she can still do it.

NotACleverName · 19/11/2018 13:45

Sluts? Tarts? Loving the low-key misogyny in this thread 👏🏻👍🏻

LittleGwyneth · 19/11/2018 13:46

The sexist language on this thread is appalling.

No one has a responsibility to be a role model for your child, other than you. They're adult women, they are sexual beings, and they're not obliged to hide that sexuality because you find it intimidating.

People have been having a go at popstars for dressing in skimpy clothing since I was a kid and Girls Aloud were massive. It's not new. Teenage girls have wanted to wear short skirts and tight tops since the 1960's, and if you think that clothing can change a girl's worth then you've got much bigger problems than how a load of singers dress.

The PP who wrote that women shouldn't dress like sluts should be ashamed. It's 2018 people.

OP: I found it a bit odd that they were singing about wearing no make up while clearly wearing make up and eyelash extensions. Would have been great if they had actually gone bare faced.

Cantaana · 19/11/2018 13:48

slut
/slʌt/Submit
nounDEROGATORY
1.
a woman who has many casual sexual partners.
synonyms: promiscuous woman; More
2.
DATED
a woman with low standards of cleanliness.

Neither of those apply to them though does it. I'm not totally sure how you can dress as a woman who has many casual sexual partners? Given they have mostly been in long term relationships and not falling out of clubs with many many men i'm not sure why there is a perception of them as 'sluts'. Taylor Swift has had many well documented relationships - I rarely see her referred to as a 'slut' (NB i don't think she is, just a comparison!)

Anyway they were young when they won. My face has changed a lot and I've not lost half as much weight as Jesy or had plastic surgery. I suspect fillers but so what?

SoupDragon · 19/11/2018 13:48

Somewhat ironic that the thread has deteriorated into slating some women for how they look.

bobstersmum · 19/11/2018 13:49

Short skirts and tight tops are fine pp! But underwear as outerwear ie usually basques and stockings, is just bizarre.

BathFullOfEels · 19/11/2018 13:51

littlegwyneth I don’t think the point of this thread was to have a go at how they dress or about them being role models. It’s that they’re fronting a campaign about being comfortable and confident with how you look, that we’re all different and beautiful in our own way but Jesy has had so much cosmetic surgery that she’s completely unrecognisable.

Racecardriver · 19/11/2018 13:53

This has always been the case with pop stars and actresses though hasn’t it? It used to be excessive make up and then extreme diet and exercise regimes and now it’s plastic surgery. All you are seeing is the politicisation of what is essentially a very vapid world in an attempt to get kudos.

Worriedmummybekind · 19/11/2018 13:54

Oh so sad. She looks unwell now. Hope she is restored to life soon

Racecardriver · 19/11/2018 13:55

@bobstersmum agreed. I don’t get it. That said French courtiers had a bread vogue of walking around with their corsets and dressed unlaced so their breasts were exposed so when you think about it at least they started getting dressed, even if they didn’t finish.

peachgreen · 19/11/2018 13:55

Mumsnet is becoming more and more misogynistic. Thoroughly depressing.

AngeloMysterioso · 19/11/2018 14:01

I just hope they have sunk without trace by the time my 2 year old is into groups like that, I find them totally inappropriate for little girls anyway.

Why the hell does everyone expect them to be role models for children? They’re 25-27 years old for Christ’s sake if you don’t want your children looking up to them then you should be better at filtering what your children listen to.

To hope their careers end because they have the audacity to not be child-friendly is ridiculously harsh.

LittleGwyneth · 19/11/2018 14:01

@BathFullOfEels

I realise that, and I agreed with the OP that there was a bit of a disconnect between their image and the lyrics of the song. But the stream of insults about Little Mix and how they dress was so gross and misogynistic that it rather distracted from the OP.

AngeloMysterioso · 19/11/2018 14:02

As for Jesy... the lip fillers are very obvious, but the rest is just down to weight loss and make up I think. They do all wear a metric fuck tonne of slap

LittleGwyneth · 19/11/2018 14:03

@AngeloMysterioso THANK YOU. They are older than some of the women on Mumsnet, they're not presenting Cebeebies.

Thisnamechanger · 19/11/2018 14:06

Must be hell having to go to work in your underwear every day.

StartingAgain1 · 19/11/2018 14:07

This thread has decended into being really mean!!
The pp saying if you don't want to be called a slut don't dress like one....woooooww!!
She's probably had surgery after reading loads of mean things people have written about her. It can't be easy having tons of strangers comment negatively about you online.

MemoryOfSleep · 19/11/2018 14:09

I don't blame them. I blame the guy media and industry that judge women so harshly if they don't fit in. The following is a quote from an article in the mirror last year:

*Back in 2012, one notorious appearance on This Morning saw Jade sport a seriously orange face and home-dyed purple hair. She also thought it fitting to wear purple dungarees.

These days, she's learned her lesson. Now, she's a chic star who rarely puts a fashion foot wrong.*

How sad for them. The rest of the article goes on to praise how they've lost any semblance of individuality over the years.

MemoryOfSleep · 19/11/2018 14:10

Don't know where the word guy came from there. Must be an autocorrect, but from what? Confused

Drogosnextwife · 19/11/2018 14:17

It was always going to happen to her surrounded by the lifestyle they live now. I was shocked at the way chloe Kardashian looked recently, I don't read magazines or watch any of them on tv so rarely see them. She had morphed into a different person aswell. Never liked little mix anyway. hate boy bands and girl bands always have.

Newjobnewstart · 19/11/2018 14:22

This is a horrible thread. Slut shaming ! Why are women always so critical of others. Remember the old adage if you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything at all

Beaverhausen · 19/11/2018 14:33

Why is it that when we women talk about how fed up we are of todays so called role models, women who assume that walking around half naked in front of the whole world which includes impressionable young children that we are horrible or slut shaming?

As a mother I am concerned as to who my 11 year old daughter has as role models these days and what message they are putting across. It is not just how they dress or how provocative they are in their videos but also the songs they sing. All of these media stars etc think that by baring your body for all to see is a positive step when in the same breath the media carries on about pornography when all a boy needs to do is go on kim kardashian and that emily womens instagram for wank material.

As a mother i should have the right to say what is acceptable and what is not acceptable and I do not find half naked men and women being shown to my 11 year old daughter writhing around sexually and singing songs about sex etc as acceptable.

I was raised that underwear was to be worn under your clothes not as clothes.

The phrase "if you don't want to be called a slut don't dress like one" is pretty much the prime example of slut charming isn't it?

I simply remind my DD that they are mid twenties and she is not even a teenager yet. I don't rely on celebrities to be "role models" for her.

SoupDragon · 19/11/2018 14:42

You don't have any right at all to say how someone else should dress. Unless you are actually their mother and they are a small child.

Chardeemacdennis1 · 19/11/2018 14:45

I don't think Jesy looks that different. She's lost puppy fat on her face as she's grown up. She's had a nose job and lip fillers but other than that I think it's just growing up, losing weight and make up.

I'm more alarmed over the fact the two mix race girls are made to look increasingly white.
