to think little mix preaching body positivity is questionable

i am all for the message of body positivity in women and i know there is always something we generally dont like or would change, but i watched little mix on the beeb saturday night and wondered what had happened to the one that had come in for some stick originally. (i thought she looked fine but you watch these groups get groomed and moulded and styled into the new cheryl coles) anyway i thought they must have replaced "jesy" .

nope. she has however morphed into a shadow of former self in that she is completely unrecognisable. she must have had some major surgery to actually look like a totally different person.

now ok it happens. and its up to her i guess.
but then i read today about the song on their new album promoting body positivity and image and loving what you have etc and thought hang on a minute Confused

is it not a bit rich coming from a group who have morphed into the usual with one morphing into looking like a whole other person completely clearly with the help of a ton of plastic surgery?

maybe iabu but thank god my DD is an adult if thats the message girls are getting.
yeah be positive and love yourself but only if you haven't got a few million in the bank to change it. disappointing.

Wow, that photo. They all look like different people and they all look a bit the same! How sad that they feel they've had to do that.

It's certainly a bit rich to be lecturing young people about body image when you've clearly spent so much money altering your appearance. And not necessarily for the better.

FrankieChips · 19/11/2018 12:54

My 11 year old niece told me they are her favourite band and my heart sank. They seem like lovely girls but I hate their image and how they are marketed. OP you are spot on about the hypocrisy.

When I was that age my role models were Mel & Kim and Amazulu! I remember being so upset when I found out Mel used to be a page 3 model haha!

SassitudeandSparkle · 19/11/2018 12:55

My daughter is a big fan, so I hear a lot about LM.

They still have the same management, bizarrely it is their management company that Simon Cowell has refused to work with and not the band (it's not just LM that has been affected). It will be interesting to see what happens in the future.

BettyDuMonde · 19/11/2018 13:02

Look like a chin implant?

Thankyounext · 19/11/2018 13:02

I agree. Their image is so overtly sexual. I have seen them cavorting around in their pants on prime time tv and it’s inappropriate when you have preteen daughters as I do. Sad too that they all look the same now.

nevermorelenore · 19/11/2018 13:03

I’m not good at judging surgery but she’s definitely got filler face. I work with quite a few women in their 20s who have fillers and they all have that exact same look. I do wonder if they’ll have long term effects from so many of them.

I’m not keen on Little Mix. My young nieces love them and I find their videos a bit much for their age group. I’m sure my parents felt the same when I liked the Spice Girls though.

RobertDeNiro · 19/11/2018 13:04

Yy re totp! I miss the days when being a pop star wasn’t about looking like a tart, but about having good songs and a good voice. I saw an old totp with joe cocker in the other day, no way would someone with average looks like thatbhave a shot at a career these days, what a shame.

HRTpatch · 19/11/2018 13:04

They look like blow up dolls. Awful.

FearLoveAndTheTimeMachine · 19/11/2018 13:08

If you do not want to be called out for being a slut do not dress and act like one

Oh. Wow.

TurquoiseDress · 19/11/2018 13:08

Totally agree re Jesy- it's not just make up & decent photoshopping.

I'm not a fan of Little Mix (I am not their demographic at all though!)

I would not call the way they dress empowering, they just look like a bunch of slappers (this is such a 90s word)

Dreading when my DD becomes a teenager and starts being influenced by celebrities, pop stars etc Sad

Skyejuly · 19/11/2018 13:11

Such a shame and a awful message

Shaboohshoobah1 · 19/11/2018 13:11

Yes! Blow up dolls is exactly what they look like - terrible example to girls. I have always got Jesy and Jade muddled up as facially they were always quite similar in my opinion, but now I can’t tell them apart at ALL. And I just wish they would wear proper clothes and stop trying to look like porn stars - where’s the empowerment in that?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 19/11/2018 13:18

Bring back Bananarama!

Badtasteflump · 19/11/2018 13:22

God yes! I also watched TOTP a few days ago and was struck by how much more empowered and in control the women on there looked - Anne Lennox and Kate Bush particularly, but also any girl groups at the time still managed to be famous without flashing their bits at everybody Sad

I've worried for a long time that we seem to be moving backwards in that respect.

Lost5stone · 19/11/2018 13:23

I'm not a fan of little mix at all (well, I'm way past their target age range anyway!) mainly because they try and put across this "girl power" image but I remember a video of them a couple of years ago taking the piss out of some girl from TOWIE for doing an everything 5 pounds ad. I don't know the girl from TOWIE but it was just unkind.

ShePoopsAConker · 19/11/2018 13:27

Aww... I like Little Mix, they can be very funny and i like some of the songs (but I do like all sorts of nonsense). But you are right, there's not actually a lot of body/face acceptance going on.

However it is not true that Kate Bush was fully clad - she generally pranced about suggestively in a leotard. One reason so many men of my generation had a huge thing for her (and I didn't, as an old-school bolshy teen feminist!)

PiperPublickOccurrences · 19/11/2018 13:29

Why do women DO this to themselves? Can they not see how totally ridiculous they look?

They are not good role models for children. They are all about sexualised dress and the "blow-up doll" look. To be fair though, they're not the brightest sparks and this idea of let's show how empowered and liberated we are hasn't come from them. They are being told what to say, do and wear by record companies.

I posted about her at the time but I was delighted when Sigrid won "new sound of 2018". Young girl, super bright, speaks several languages, natural look, real talent.

kirkandpetal · 19/11/2018 13:35

I liked them when they first came on the scene because they weren't overtly sexy or in your face flesh, and they appealed to a younger girl market - that was slightly novel compared to some other girl pop stars out there. But I guess they've 'grown up' and dressing like your average teen isn't sexy or appealing for them anymore.

Both my DDs like their songs, but they're not into watching music videos or such like yet, so they don't really have an idea of what they look like. The songs are bad enough though, I made the mistake of downloading the'Shout out to my ex' song for my eldest DD, and it's obvs wasn't the radio edit that blanks out the word sex in "I hope she's getting better sex". It makes me cringe.

Badtasteflump · 19/11/2018 13:36

However it is not true that Kate Bush was fully clad - she generally pranced about suggestively in a leotard

Yes you're right, she was perceived as being very sexy at the time (and probably now) but IMO she did it in a way that was individual and clearly her own style - nobody else looked like her. Now it seems everybody is trying to look like the same blow up doll.

PositiveVibez · 19/11/2018 13:36

I feel sorry for them. They think they are empowered, but they aren't. They are puppets. Being sexy is their main aim.

Considering their target market, their provocotiveness [sic?], is quite sickening.

megletthesecond · 19/11/2018 13:38

"sluts" Hmm FFS.
Is this the 1950's or something?

Sidelook · 19/11/2018 13:38

Shocking state of affairs. Jesy was pretty and had no need to alter herself. She looks like robotic and dead behind her eyes. It’s so sad to see that young girls think this is the way forward.

goatscheesepie · 19/11/2018 13:39

It's great that Jesy spent all that money on surgery to look like Carol Vorderman.

Badtasteflump · 19/11/2018 13:41

Although funnily enough, Carol Vorderman doesn't look like Carol Vorderman anymore Hmm

bobstersmum · 19/11/2018 13:42

Jesy has always reminded me of when Carol vorderman did Cher on stars in their eyes!
