Today I almost met somebody who has been a big figure in my life. It took ages to pluck up the courage to speak to them and I was totally dismissed. I wasn’t being a “gushing fan” and it was a setting that was laid back. Everyone else was lovely. Have tou ever met someone you admire and wish you hadn’t?

alltoomuchrightnow · 22/11/2018 16:53

`Highheels, I LOVE DM so am glad to hear that!

Abra1de · 22/11/2018 17:03

My son liked Prince Philip too at a DoE presentation.

YoThePussy · 22/11/2018 17:13

I have met the Queen and Prince Charles. Queenie was sweet, bit po faced at first then I made her laugh and her whole face lit up. Prince Charles was a bit flirtatious with me, very sharp wit, came over as a very nice chap.

Nearly knocked Jo Brand flying once as I was stomping along a street in London. Small but with a face on her that brooked no nonsense or people recognising her. Just said sorry as I would to anyone and kept walking.

I would hate to be a celeb and have people approach me. I know I would be foul and mentioned on Mumsnet as a c**t.

Heartofglass21 · 22/11/2018 17:15

A family friend knows Maggie Smith and has been friends with her for decades. She doesn't tolerate fools gladly, apparently, but is loyal to those that count. She scares me to death though, I wouldn't dare ask for an autograph or even offer to make her a cup of tea.

I met Russell Grant (astrologer) at a local event last summer and he was fabulous, very over the top and theatrical in every way, but had a kind word and smile for everyone, young and old.

DirtyNumbAngel · 22/11/2018 17:24

mydogishot

Im so glad to hear Jonah Lomu was so lovely! I had a huge crush on him!
Such a shame he died so young.

GallicosCats · 22/11/2018 17:49

We had Harriet Walter drop in at work once - the briefest of encounters but she came across as very sweet, very polite and grateful for some directions to the restaurant she was meeting someone at. Grin

YoThePussy · 22/11/2018 17:56

Prunella Scales came into where I worked. Cut my boss dead when she started waffling about something and turned to me as she had spied a photo of my cats on my desk. Discussed our respective cats for several minutes with boss getting increasingly annoyed. As can be imagined by my username loved her to bits.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 22/11/2018 18:03

Mooncup Jason Orange gaydar well off.

alltoomuchrightnow · 22/11/2018 18:34

Lady Colin Campbell... polite, pleasant enough
Was ordered to make her a cup of tea in a proper china cup and not a mug, though that was coming from my boss (also a celeb) and not from her

IslaMann · 22/11/2018 18:41

I’ve met Le God - Matt Le Tissier - a couple of times. (DH & I are Southampton fans) The first was in a meet and greet thing at a local festival, had a photo and a chat. The second time I was having Sunday lunch in a pub in Hampshire with my parents, DH and DS. Matt was sat at the next table with his wife and daughter who was very young. DS was about 16, and played with her, as she kept coming up to our table. Both occasions Matt was charm personified.
I luff him.

SayingMyThing · 22/11/2018 18:55

Howard Keel, bloody fabulous.
I interrupted a conversation he was having because I knew my my granny would never forgive me if I didn't seize the opportunity.
Said I was the most beautiful woman in the room and had his friend take several pictures of us with his arm around my waist. Still besotted years later and made my granny very happy.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 22/11/2018 19:01

Jason Orange - my gaydar went off but must be faulty. Energetic type

Can categorically state definitely not gay. Can't comment if bisexual or not.

WendyWoofer · 22/11/2018 19:06

Justin (Mr Tumble), Brian Blessed, Ieuan Evans, Leigh Halfpenny, George North, Bonnie Tyler, Cerys Matthews, Bryn Terfel, Lia Salonga, all absolutely lovely - very normal.

Catherine Zeta Jones, Charlotte Church, Tom Jones, Lucie Jones, Sian Lloyd, Michael Douglas, Sophie Evans - too far stuck up their own arses to acknowledge anyone else 🙄

SayingMyThing · 22/11/2018 19:34

Surprised about Michael Douglas, I thought he'd be far too professional and experienced to be a prat.

mumonashoestring · 22/11/2018 19:35

@WendyWoofer I might have cried if Brian Blessed had been on the 'arse' list! DH and I are both huge John Tams fans and thankfully he's just the loveliest man.

DH met Murray Walker years ago, says he was absolutely charming, as was Joe Pasquale, Bruce Dickinson and, collectively, The Darkness. Jim Davidson on the other hand was an absolute copper-bottomed cunt.

I've scooped various Olympic medal winning riders off the floor and helped them back into the saddle at events (back when you could still keep going after a fall). William Fox-Pitt, Matt Ryan, Leslie Law, Clayton Fredericks, Andrew Nicholson all absolutely lovely. Mark Todd can be a bit of an arse though.

One of my old colleagues years ago completely baffled Alan Rickman Grin She was walking down the street and saw someone she recognised, so she gave him a big smile and started to wave - then she realised who it was and why she recognised him, and just as he started to wave back she pulled a terrible grimacing cringe-face and scuttled off down the nearest alleyway leaving him looking completely nonplussed Grin

YouTheCat · 22/11/2018 20:08

I saw Joss Ackland at the Haymarket bus station in Newcastle a few years ago. He was wearing a very flamboyant hat and cravat. I didn't approach him as I didn't know what to say.

LuckyDiamond · 22/11/2018 20:57

Own up, which of you Mumsnetters has bumped uglies with Jason 🍊?

MoistCantaloupe · 22/11/2018 21:12

So he was having a conversation with someone.
You ask for an autograph. He gives it but carries on his conversation whilst doing so.
I’m utterly indifferent to him but bit unfair to label him horrible on the basis of this. Seems like you were rude

No I mentioned it was at an event. The event was the opening of the Disney channel - I was ten and had to queue to meet him. Perhaps that content would have been better earlier, but he was the rude one in the situation. After queuing he grabbed my paper, someone he knew came to him, he chatted to them, then shoved the paper back at me.

sosmooth · 22/11/2018 21:37

jellybears He had finished his meal and was getting up. i do understand he's just human and I still think he's one of the funniest comedians ever.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 22/11/2018 21:40

Own up, which of you Mumsnetters has bumped uglies with Jason 🍊?

I bloody wish. He is hot. A good (female) friend has however had the pleasure and dated him for a while so know for sure is not gay.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 22/11/2018 21:41

I might have cried if Brian Blessed had been on the 'arse' list!

I saw him fairly recently on his tour - An Evening With type thing. He was magnificent. As bananas as you'd expect but so inspirational.

BrokeLuce · 22/11/2018 21:53

I worked in a London hotel on my gap year and met Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. I was so starstruck and they were so lovely to me. A colleague dropped her tray and they helped her pick everything back up. They chatted with me like we were friends and I told them about my not getting into drama school for the second time. They were both so kind snd sympathetic and shared their tough roads to success.

I also met Ian Hislop and the Private Eye team. It was 10am but they were very 'jolly' and very, very funny.

YouTheCat · 22/11/2018 21:58

I also went to an evening with Brian Blessed recently. The man is a legend. His Pavaroti at the end was just amazing.

SerenDippitty · 22/11/2018 22:03

Dave Lee Travis was a supercilious arse.

DH was across the aisle from Ben Miller on a train recently. Gave him a nice smile.
