To take him to a&e

My 1 year old is having fever for the last 10 days ! I have taken him to the gp 2 times and they insist is viral and it will go away on its own . I cant help but be concerned . I have always known that if a fever lasts longer than 5 days it ahould be investigated .
I am thinking of taking him to a&e to be seem by a pedestrian ! Am i overacting ??

If you’re worried, is there an out of hours service in your area?

Have you given both calpol and ibuprofen? This is all they will do to start with. What is the temperature? If above 40 and you have given both medications and it isn’t coming down then yes, go. If not then probably not.

How high is the fever? Any other symptoms? Have you given any calpol? I can’t say yes or no to your question unfortunately but if you’re really worried about your child being ill then you need to trust your instincts.

Well how is the child? Is he well in himself?

If the fever comes down with medication then I’d stay home. If it doesn’t I’d see the out of hours GP. A temperature on its own I wouldn’t take a child to a&e

Incorrect. Viral infections can last weeks.

How high is the fever?

Does it come down after antipyrexials eg paracetamol and ibuprofen?

Does your child look unwell?

Is it an accident or a medical emergency?

If you're on day 10 and you know a fever over 5 days should be investigated then why ask here? Granted doctors can be wrong sometimes, but what other symptoms does he have? A constant 40+ temp for ten days , yes id take him to a&e

A temp for 10 days sounds awfully long bless him. I would. I had to take my DS to A&e a couple of months ago for a really high temp that wasn’t coming down with medicine - turns out he had a chest infection and we were sent off with antibiotics in less than an hour. Is he really struggling right now?? If so I’d take him.

I would be concerned that there's an infection that hasn't been properly treated. A fever for 10 days is not usual.

I was at the doctors with my own sick child today and she told me that a fever lasting over 5 days was a "red flag". I would take him to A&E.

Does the temperature reduce with calpol and ibuprofen? If yes then that's ok. If not then call 111 for advice. If nothing has changed tonight then it's not for a&e

His fever goes down with calpol or nurofen but as soon as they wear off it comes back . If i dont give him medicine after 4 hours his temperature spikes to 39 and above
When his temperature is up he is unwell sleepy and just wants me to hold him after giving him medicine he is ok .
He also has runny nose and a cough , runny poo and sometimes vomiting .

I just have no experience of viral infections woth fever lasting that long ? Am just scared is something sinister

What's his temperature and will the temperature come down after you giving him the ibuprofen? If it keeps as high as , say 40, and will not come down after the medication then further investigation will be needed, especially if your kid doesn't eat or drink probably ( like no enough wet nappies) and hard to wake up, etc. Otherwise a&e will not be necessary and your baby may catch other viruses, etc and may have longer fever for different reasons.

Hope your little one get better soon! I can completely understand your feeling and worries as I actually went to a&e when DS had very high temperature for 3 weeks when he was 15 months. But they just did some regular checks same with what the GP did and we were sent back then. The long waiting in hospital didn't help DS either!

Does he have any other symptoms? If not (presumably doctor checked breathing, chest, ears, tonsils etc) then it probably is just a virus that they can't help

If temperature has gone up, or you're worried about dehydration if can't get him to eat, or he is getting worse or seems listless or disinterested then I'd take to out of hours.

If it's just been the same for 10 days then I'd probably wait til Monday and take him back to the Doctor. Most of the time our doctor says give it a few days and if no better come back and we will review again

You are right the nhs website says to visit gp if fever for 5 days or more and they will investigate but presumably they checked him when he was in.

@Sugarhunnyicedtea if it's an ongoing problem with no consistent solution, nobody minds a reasonably worried mother seeking help for her child.
