To take him to a&e

My 1 year old is having fever for the last 10 days ! I have taken him to the gp 2 times and they insist is viral and it will go away on its own . I cant help but be concerned . I have always known that if a fever lasts longer than 5 days it ahould be investigated .
I am thinking of taking him to a&e to be seem by a pedestrian ! Am i overacting ??

GP here- no you are not overreacting. Temperature of over 39 for 10 days needs to be seen again. Very unusual to get this high temperature for this long with a viral illness. I don't normally say this but I would take him somewhere with access to paediatricians (like A+E) not just to the out of hours GP service- he needs chest Xray and blood tests. It may well have looked like a virus when the GP saw him before- but things progress and sometimes bacterial infections like pneumonia then develop.

tablebrush · 16/11/2018 22:44

I'd definitely take him OP. Don't listen to anyone saying otherwise, it's not their child so they can be blasé. He's your baby and you know best. Trust your instincts and take him to a&e where they will check him properly.
Hopefully it is absolutely nothing and you'll be home and maybe feel a little embarrassed but on the scale of things who cares!? So much better than the alternative xx

Hidillyho · 16/11/2018 22:44

Are you usually a worrier when it comes to your son? I don’t mean this to sound rude or anything. I’m not generally a worrier with DD so if I consider that she needs to go to hospital then I just take her. Drs would rather see 100 ‘healthy’ children than miss the 1 that didn’t go.
I honestly believe that parents usually have the correct gut feeling when it comes to their children.

Do you have a children’s hospital near you? As this would be better than A&E if you have one. You gave nurophen at 9. What is his temp now?

notpostedherebefore · 16/11/2018 22:47

Whether the paracetamol is working or not makes absolutely no difference in determining whether an illness is viral or bacterial. I would guess that this is pneumonia but needs things like a urine infection excluding.

BettyDuMonde · 16/11/2018 22:48

Go get some tests - if it’s nothing then fantastic, but I can’t sleep until you say you are going 😬

snackarella · 16/11/2018 22:49

111 that's what it's there for, let them decide what he needs

guineapig1 · 16/11/2018 22:50

Another one saying to take him to
A&E (or out of hours if in the same unit). You are clearly concerned enough to post here. My sil is a gp and also covers ooo shift in a larger hospital unit and always says that if she would rather see 100 children to check them than think that parents are worried but haven’t called or dropped in. Follow your instinct x

garethsouthgatesmrs · 16/11/2018 22:52

A doctor came on and said a&e please do take him if his fever goes up again,.

mumsnet is really obsessed with not wasting nhs resources to the point where I think sometimes the advice is unreasonable. The NHSis there to help people who are ill, your son is clearly ill and you don't know what he is ill with so its reasonable to follow your gut and seek urgent advice. Even the HS website says to phone 111 with a fever lasting over 5 days on evenings and weekends. It's not like you are taking him with a papercut. I would listen to the doctor OP.

Artus · 16/11/2018 22:52

My grandson had pneumonia despite having been seen twice by a GP and being assessed by 111 as having a virus. No one at fault, very young children can deteriorate very quickly.

garethsouthgatesmrs · 16/11/2018 22:52

NHS website not HS

Keel · 16/11/2018 22:53

OP listen to the drs on here who are all advising you to take your baby to the hospital. Medics never mind seeing babies and kids. Hope he picks up soon x

2isabella2 · 16/11/2018 22:53

Mine had pneumonia and temp did come down with medicine, she'd also been admitted and discharged from hospital with a diagnosis of bronchiolitis but I wasn't happy. I followed my instincts and took her back to hospital and she was then given a chest X-ray.

If you are worried about such a young child, at least call 111, that's exactly what it's there for.

naicepineapple · 16/11/2018 22:55

To be fair, I had a very bad cough for a while, GP said my chest was clear. Had a planned operation as he said my chest was clear. Turned out I had pneumonia, was very poorly. Not pleasant recovering from an op I wouldn't have been given if they'd known how poorly I was.
So things can get missed (or get worse)

Schuyler · 16/11/2018 22:56

I think some people overreact on here but he’s very young, has a fever and a cough - all these things would make me say A&E.

garethsouthgatesmrs · 16/11/2018 23:00

When I had pneumonia my temperature was going up and down with medication. I was ill for several days with what i thought was flu then eventually 111 advised a&e. If I was a baby I wouldn't have been able to describe my symptoms and it would have been easy to assume a cold or flu.

take him!

Onehellofaride · 16/11/2018 23:05

DS had pneumonia and his temp was brought down a little with meds. He was lethargic and I couldn’t rest because he just didn’t seem right. Glad I took him. I would definitely go to be on the safe side

JudasPrudy · 16/11/2018 23:08

Yeah if his condition isn't good YANBU to want to seek medical attention. The only thing is a&e can be unpleasant on a Friday night but your hospital might have a paediatric waiting area.

BettyDuMonde · 16/11/2018 23:09

If you have a hospital with a paediatric unit within reach, go there rather than regular A&E.

Pack a phone charger and a toothbrush, just in case!

Now, skidaddle.

Please?

anxiousmotherof1 · 16/11/2018 23:13

I called 111 they said gp will call me back

anxiousmotherof1 · 16/11/2018 23:16

@BettyDuMonde i dont undestand what you mean . How can i access a pediatric unit directly ? There is one at our hospital but i cannot just go there

Marcipex · 16/11/2018 23:20

DGS was like this , he saw 2 gps on two different days, both said just a virus.
It was pneumonia and he ended up in hospital on oxygen on Christmas Eve.
Sometimes I think things just don't show plainly soon enough.
Do whatever works, OOH probably. Don't do nothing, trust your instincts.

Windinmyhair · 16/11/2018 23:22

Some hospitals have specialist children's A&E/Will have a paediatric unit attached and some will not - I think @BettyDuMonde is just guiding you to find the best one that will have staff available to treat.

BettyDuMonde · 16/11/2018 23:24

Sorry, I meant a paediatric A&E - both my nearest hospitals have one (seperate entrance to the main A&E) but I live in a major city, so I realise it’s not an option for everyone.

Make a list of all the symptoms and the time scale (ie, date of when DS first fell sick, how many days he’s been having calpol and how many times a day, the extra thirst, average numbers of wet nappies, how many hours a day he’s sleeping etc, highest temperature and most recent temperature, time of most recent medication etc) ready for the GP call back? It’s easy to forget in the moment and a GP on the phone can’t see your son.

Fingers crossed it’s nothing but it really is better to be safe than sorry!

motherone · 16/11/2018 23:24

I would say trust yr instincts only you know yr son the best. to be honest a temp for that long I would be concerned. My hubby also is very laid Bk with these things but I have learned to do what I feel is best

Fallingout · 16/11/2018 23:28

This happened to my dd and in the end I did take her to a&e (we’d been to the gp 4 times) she had a horrendous urine infection. No one had tested her urine of suggested it and she wasn’t complaining of pain when weeing etc.
So they said I did the right thing, but that s gp should’ve picked it up.
