My 1 year old is having fever for the last 10 days ! I have taken him to the gp 2 times and they insist is viral and it will go away on its own . I cant help but be concerned . I have always known that if a fever lasts longer than 5 days it ahould be investigated .
I am thinking of taking him to a&e to be seem by a pedestrian ! Am i overacting ??

Call 111 and relay all of the symptoms. If necessary, with one available in your area, they will pass it on to the out of hours service

anxiousmotherof1 · 16/11/2018 22:07

I ll see how he gets on tonight if he gets such a high fever again i will call 111 for advice! Its just been so long now !

I have to say, I wouod take him too.

Your ds is only 1yo and a high fever can be very serious at that age.
The fever has been there for a long time.
He is ‘sleepy’ with the fever.

Plenty for me to take him. And I’m VERY laid back on that sort of things.

RTFT · 16/11/2018 22:09

!

TwistinMyMelon · 16/11/2018 22:10

@Birdsgottafly - fever lasting more than 5 days is red flag for Kawasaki's disease. It's not incorrect.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 16/11/2018 22:12

Calpol meant to be used for reducing a high temperature

ReflectionsofParadise · 16/11/2018 22:12

No harm in going to A&E OP. They'd rather you took him in and get him checked over than risk it being something else.

He could have an ear infection, anything etc.

Hiphopopotamous · 16/11/2018 22:12

Unlikely to see a paediatrician in A&E anyway.
It will be staffed mostly by junior doctors, especially out of hours. Your GP was better qualified.
(DOI: GP. Not knocking juniors!)

anxiousmotherof1 · 16/11/2018 22:12

I dont want to google kawasaki

So basically sod 111. Take him in to A&E. Put your own mind at rest.

Hauskat · 16/11/2018 22:13

I would take him. I might call 111 first. But honestly if they didn’t recommend an out of hours appointment and I was really worried i would go to a and e anyway. I know some people might hate me for that but I honestly don’t think that’s the wrong thing to do for a child that age after so long. If they aren’t too worried and you have to wait ages I would find that reassuring but I think it’s better to play it safe.

ReflectionsofParadise · 16/11/2018 22:14

@Hiphopopotamous that's not what happens at my local kids A&E (Alder Hey). We went at 11pm and saw a paediatrician on duty.

Darkstar4855 · 16/11/2018 22:14

I would ring 111 for an appointment with the out of hours GP. They can refer you directly to your local children’s ward if needed which could save you a long wait in A&E (likely to be busy at this time on a Friday night).

ReflectionsofParadise · 16/11/2018 22:15

Get off your phone OP and GO TO A&E!

naicepineapple · 16/11/2018 22:15

DS had the flu last winter at 16mo and had the same symptoms for 2 weeks. He was very poorly. It's likely to 'just' be the flu.
Is he drinking and peeing?
Make sure you're careful not to give too much Brufen & calpol op. Keep a track on your phone notes.

MrsLettuce · 16/11/2018 22:15

Yes, i think you should ring 111 and take him.

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 16/11/2018 22:16

Have you phoned 111 OP?

naicepineapple · 16/11/2018 22:17

A&E won't mind ever seeing such a small child though.

BitchPeas · 16/11/2018 22:17

Don’t worry if it was Kawasaki Disease, paracetamol and neurofen would not help or bring his fever down.

Hiphopopotamous · 16/11/2018 22:18

@ReflectionsofParadise almost certainly the paediatric registrar - even an SHO can introduce themselves as a "paediatrician on call"! Worked at a massive tertiary centre and there were no paediatric consultants out of hours except if called in for catastrophe.

tolerable · 16/11/2018 22:18

id take him

LoniceraJaponica · 16/11/2018 22:19

Has he had his urine tested? It could be a urine infection.

BettyDuMonde · 16/11/2018 22:19

Take him! My daughter had a similar pattern (typical childhood virus that didn’t get better after a few days) and it turned out to be life threatening - hemophagocytic lymphohistioticitosis. She was on a ventilator for 3 days. HLH leads to organ failure and death and we were stupidly lucky it was recognised so quickly.

If it’s nothing they will soon figure out via blood tests and send you home. Don’t risk it.

anxiousmotherof1 · 16/11/2018 22:21

My dh says am overeacting and we had two doctors tell us is viral so there is no need to go to a&e or call 111 ! I really dont know what to do !
He had a temp of 39.5 at 6 in the afternoon i gave him calpol and he was fine at 7 he ate and drank and was playing .
I gave him nurofen and put him to bed at 9 (unusual but he had many naps today )
If i dont give him calpol again at 1 his temp will go up . At least thats what is happening for the last 10 days !

I don't know what classes as out of hours in a childrens A&E, but my DD saw two paediatric consultants whilst there at around 7-8.30pm a few weeks ago. She was in with suspected sepsis though.
