For me, Malory Towers. I still love those books and always enjoy reading about the outdoor pool, Gwendoline's misdemeanours, and Mamzelle's eccentricities.

Chalet School - the mountains and adventures, but think the religion would have got on my nerves.

Malory Towers and St Claires - a lot of bullying went on. I don't think I'd like it, and the world seemed much more restricted than the CS. Also that pool would definitely be freezing.

Hogwarts - would be AMAZING. Though I could do without the whole murderous sociopath experience.

Scoose · 16/11/2018 16:59

Malory towers who wouldn't love a midnight feast?!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/11/2018 16:59

Screaming I think it would be worth going to Kingscote to see if Lois Sanger really was that gruesome.
And to sleep in Sara Crewe.

HumphreyCobblers · 16/11/2018 16:59

But Nicola and the others love being at Kingscote! Nicola is BEREFT when she thinks she might have to leave.

Pollaidh · 16/11/2018 17:02

@KERALA1

Second hand - plenty of the paperbacks around on Amazon and Abe, but you'd have to buy one at a time, as I've never seen sets, or even mini sets come up.

The hard backs are now worth quite a lot, at least £10 a book probably but going up to hundreds, and mainly found in specialist children's second hand/collectors bookshops.

GirlsGone By Press and something similar are reprinting many of them.

TetherEnding · 16/11/2018 17:04

Trebizon. I had crushes on both Tish and her brother Grin

mamaduckbone · 16/11/2018 17:11

Oh the Chalet School for me too. I was Joey’s best friend, in my mind. All those warm rolls and milky coffees...

DappledThings · 16/11/2018 17:13

I was Joey’s best friend

Err, I think you'll find I was Joey's best friend actually. Don't make me go all Simone on you!!

Mallory towers!!

Tweakanddashi · 16/11/2018 17:19

Starfleet academy. I considered a Jedi training academy but TBH it looks a bit too hard.

GerdaLovesLiIi · 16/11/2018 17:19

Grimbles Will you walk the Gerund or shall I?

Nicola is bereft at the thought of losing her friends, not Kingscote. She can quite well bear that.
Not even being separated from her twin, Lawrie, upsets her so much - in fact, she counts it as a positive that she won’t have to sit through similar scenes to the Tempest one and have people asking “Can’t you do something with her?!”

MrsStrowman · 16/11/2018 17:19

Malory towers, I used to dream of going away to boarding school for all of those kinds of shenanigans

BlitheringIdiots · 16/11/2018 17:20

I went to boarding school in the 80s and it was just like the ones in the books :-)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/11/2018 17:23

I was desperate to go to boarding school - having read some of the Chalet school books, I was sure that I would be safe from bullying at boarding school - I certainly wasn’t safe from it at my school, and my parents did nothing to help me.

BlitheringIdiots · 16/11/2018 17:24

Bullying went on. Most people at some point were 'sent to coventry'. But you do learn to get on with people and allow for everyone's foibles

fluuuuu · 16/11/2018 17:26

Hogwarts!!!

Upon reflection, I think you are completely right about that.

Witchend · 16/11/2018 17:28

Chalet School on the face of it. Except I'd have been one of the duds when it came to languages, and liking maths was always a sign of a bad character.
After that Kingscote although I think the politics would have bored me.

I think the thing with Nicola leaving Kingscote it's her friends not the school. She says it wouldn't be so bad if Miranda etc were with her.
I think because she has her very separate group of friends she can be her own person at Kingscote much more than at home where she's treated as "one of the little twins" and expected to give way to Lawrie to make things easier for everyone. At school they don't really treat them as "the twins" after bits in the first term.

pastapestoparmesan · 16/11/2018 17:30

I still want to go to Trebizon. It sounds utterly idyllic, whilst being quite realistic at the same time!

OllyBJolly · 16/11/2018 17:30

St Elmo's anyone? Grin

Mallory Towers for me. I did eventually go to boarding school which was all my wishes come true. It was a state school though - my family moved somewhere very remote and I had to live in during the week. No one was rich (that I knew about), and the outdoor pool was the North Sea where we did actually swim. Plenty ghost stories and adventures and midnight feasts - which latterly included vodka and orange cordial....

Tetrapanex · 16/11/2018 17:31

Mallory Towers for the rock hewn swimming pool without a doubt. But would wear St Clare’s uniform as not into a brown and orange belted tunic.

LesLavandes · 16/11/2018 17:32

Mallory Towers

Papergirl1968 · 16/11/2018 17:36

Malory Towers possibly, for the sea views, tidal swimming pool, and didn’t have turrets or towers? Not St Clare’s as the younger girls had to act as slaves (can’t remember the actual name) for the older girls and make their toast, clean their shoes etc.
But overall I think the Chalet School has the edge, for the scenery, the food, the duvets etc. And the uniforms are ok. I think gentian would suit me! Am less keen on the idea of the choice of cold or “chill off” baths for the wimps! And the religion!
There are very funny Chalet School threads within the children’s books section, and also you can ask for access to transcripts.
Otherwise occasionally I come across copies in charity shops or second hand bookshops. If anyone lives in or near Staffordshire, join the library service as it has quite a few titles.
