AIBU to hate the term ‘little one’ so much?

Ok I know IABU but I LOATHE it. It’s such a cutesy, self-important, twee, naïf term. It immediately makes me bristle 😬

I’m not so bothered about it as “baby”. As in “what does baby like?” Or “waiting for baby to be born”. It’s THE baby!!!

It makes me irrationally angry.

SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 16/11/2018 07:37

It saves me having to remember the name!

Winegumaddict · 16/11/2018 07:37

I use little one when I can't remember or tell if it's a boy or a girl or remember their name!

ButchyRestingFace · 16/11/2018 07:39

I hate the “DH/B/S/D” convention. And when the OP (don’t like that either but, hey!) is complaining about what a bastard their “DH” is, it seems especially incongruous.

mimibunz · 16/11/2018 07:39

I worked with a woman who called her son “lit lun” (that’s what I heard due to her accent) and for the longest time I thought that was his name, which was something like Brian.

kayakingmum · 16/11/2018 07:39

I use little one if I'm not sure if it's a boy or a girl as well :)

EeeSheWasThin · 16/11/2018 07:39

YANBU

“little man” sets my teeth on edge.

The worst...seen on Instagram...”ma lil bub”

🙄

InspectorIkmen · 16/11/2018 07:40

“Little man” or “Little lady” are way way worse.
Although YANBU anyway.

mimibunz · 16/11/2018 07:40

Oh, and “lit lun” was 12!

ButchyRestingFace · 16/11/2018 07:42

The worst...seen on Instagram...”ma lil bub”

Could have been “ma lil bubZ.” Grin

I like references to “the wean”. Hear it a lot where I live.

MumNeedsANap · 16/11/2018 07:43

Oh no I use little one all the time, when I can't remember the baby's name, or if I'm not sure if they are a girl or a boy..... going to have to come up with a new phrase

naicepineapple · 16/11/2018 07:43

I say the wee one but I'm Scottish so allowed Grin
Also if I've forgotten someone's child's name or don't know if it's a girl or boy.

Princessmushroom · 16/11/2018 07:43

‘Little man’ does it for me. I can’t stand it

Eminybob · 16/11/2018 07:55

YANBU

But worse - my mum text me asking if there was any sign of the “new bubba” making an appearance yet.
Aside from the superfluous “new” and the fact that of course I would tell my own mother if I had given birth - fucking bubba????

EeeSheWasThin · 16/11/2018 07:55

butchy noooo!

Don’t put that thought in my head 😀

batshitbetty · 16/11/2018 08:00

L'il man/L'il lady/l'il bubba make me want to 🤯 If you are old enough to have a child, you are too old to talk like one

LilMy33 · 16/11/2018 08:04

I don’t mind little one so much. I don’t like little man though, not sure why exactly. There are much worse things for a baby/toddler to be called. Like sexy. My sister says stuff that to babies. “You are so sexy!” And “look at your sexy legs!” I can feel my teeth set on edge and my face twitch whenever she says sexy Envy < not envy.

Blanchedupetitpois · 16/11/2018 08:08

Eurgh, sexy is much worse!

What do people say to her when she does that?

Can you just imagine the response if a man told a baby it was “sexy”? 😬

LostInShoebiz · 16/11/2018 08:18

A lynching?

SnuggyBuggy · 16/11/2018 08:19

I prefer little un

CherryPavlova · 16/11/2018 08:21

Sexy to a child is completely wrong.
Little one is a statement of fact usually. I call my youngest little one or kitten and she’s 20 ( but small). Not all the time, obviously.

AjasLipstick · 16/11/2018 08:33

What about "The Boy"

People referring to their male child as "The boy"

WHY!???

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 16/11/2018 08:34

I absolutely loathe and detest little un 🤢 closely followed by lil man, lil lady. Just fuck right off argh 😤

ShakespearesSisters · 16/11/2018 08:37

So, what is the suggestion when you need to refer to a child and you haven't a clue of their name or if the child is a boy or girl. Little one seemed unisex to me. "How's your kid/child today?" seems a bit blunt
