AIBU to hate the term ‘little one’ so much?

Ok I know IABU but I LOATHE it. It’s such a cutesy, self-important, twee, naïf term. It immediately makes me bristle 😬

Our GP calls DD "little one" and her legs "leggies". So clearly these are the correct medical terms we should all use.

Your GP is being wantonly casual- 'leggies' is actually a shortening of the technical term 'leggingtons'.

Stargirl90 · 16/11/2018 21:48

I'm in North England, they pronounce it as 'bain' or 'bains' but spell it 'bairns'

I prefer womb nugget

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 16/11/2018 23:54

God there are some miserable people on this site.

TheVoidOfJanet · 17/11/2018 00:02

A former colleague referred to her “precious bundle/s”. Boak.

Kintan · 17/11/2018 00:03

The worst terms I’ve seen in this vein is one of the Kardashian sisters calling her daughter little mama. So bizarre.

rubyslipper1 · 17/11/2018 00:18

hate "wee guy" . Dislike "guy" used in any sentence to be honest.

MachoManRandySavage · 17/11/2018 09:17

We say bairns in our family. I personally love it!

I have seen prinny used on FB - not so keen on that one.

MsHopey · 17/11/2018 09:23

Sign me up for hard labour 😬
I use little man, little one and little family.

And yet I hate babby and bubz.

gonzo77 · 17/11/2018 09:26

My dh calls his son lickle man. Makes me want to heave.

My two are known by their names only.

UserMe18 · 17/11/2018 09:29

I think I can abide little one, sure I've used it myself, but princess and prince is when I vomit into my mouth.

Blanchedupetitpois · 17/11/2018 09:30

Womb nugget!

My repertoire has been fabulously expanded by this thread

This is cathartic. Please may I add these to the hated pile:

Family time
Making memories
Bundle of joy
Snuggles
Gone down (for put to bed)
Boob as a verb 🤮
Hubby

🤮🤮🤮

allwalkedout · 17/11/2018 16:05

I can give you a whole list of what’s worse:
Little brat
Stupid idiot
Little shit
F*%king nightmare
Pain in the arse
Little tw@t

Need I go on?

Cutesy terms may sound naff and irritating to some but I really can’t get upset about people referring to their children affectionately and enjoying their families.

JassyRadlett · 17/11/2018 16:10

I’m not so bothered about it as “baby”. As in “what does baby like?” Or “waiting for baby to be born”. It’s THE baby!!!

Oh god. A thousand times this. Why doesn’t a baby warrant a definite article? It’s like talking about the mother as ‘mum’ in the third person rather than ‘his/her mum’.

Mind you, I do sometimes refer to mine as small humans, which I’m sure some people hate. My eldest has started to refer to himself and his brother, or all of KS1, as ‘younglings’. No idea where that came from.

JassyRadlett · 17/11/2018 16:11

I’ve just googled. Younglings is Star Wars. I should have bloody known. Grin

Blanchedupetitpois · 17/11/2018 16:14

@Carolcool YES, all of those should also be on the banish list. Boob as a verb is especially heinous.

@EeeSheWasThin
I hate little man too, it just drives me mad. Worse still me and my little men #mummies boys, seen on friend of a friends FB reminded me to change my settings.

Ghanagirl · 17/11/2018 16:21

@AjasLipstick
My SIL does that with my son drives me mad, they call DD by her name. He’s the only male cousin so not sure if that’s why when he was a baby it used to upset me as thought they didn’t like him but think they thought it was affectionate.
