AIBU to hate the term ‘little one’ so much?

Ok I know IABU but I LOATHE it. It’s such a cutesy, self-important, twee, naïf term. It immediately makes me bristle 😬

I would find Sexy Lady creepy as fuck

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 16/11/2018 14:00

Yeah he was pretty horrendous. It was particularly jarring as it was the high dependency ward so all the babies were really ill or addicted or being closely monitored for some reason. For some reason, "hey sexy lady" was particularly ick in that context.

Blanchedupetitpois · 16/11/2018 14:01

I also hate 'boobin' for breastfeeding....

Agreed, this makes me want to die.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, or maybe it's just local to where I live , but people who refer to their children as bairns Hmm

JellyBears · 16/11/2018 14:20

Americans say “kiddos and littles” I find that really cringe and annoying.

DoJo · 16/11/2018 17:49

I'm usually all over hating twee names for kids, but little one is not on my shit list when it's used to actually address a child. I call my youngest 'Little One', but would never refer to him as 'My Little One' in conversation.

toomuchtooold · 16/11/2018 17:58

people referring to their child as “this boy” “this girl”

Or #thisonethough - aaargh. Although I did and do refer to my twins as the ladies, as in "ready to go to the supermarket, ladies?" and I have done since they were 6 months old so perhaps I shouldn't be throwing stones out of my own glasshouse...

SoyDora · 16/11/2018 18:03

Hate ‘littlies’.
I have a friend with 4DC. All evenly spaced in terms of age. She calls the 2 older children ‘the big ones’ and the 2 younger ones ‘the little ones’. I’m not sure why it makes me so irrationally angry Grin

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 16/11/2018 18:15

Crotch fruit 🤣 bloody marvellous

Eliza9917 · 16/11/2018 18:29

Yabu. I used to call my 8st dog little one. As in "come along little one". It started when she was a tiny pup but stuck.

LordPickle · 16/11/2018 18:39

I really dislike when people abbreviate LG or LB as opposed to DD or DS. I don't know why but it gives me the internet rage. Angry

Papergirl1968 · 16/11/2018 18:40

Babbie drives me mad (Black Country). And bloody bab which seems to have become popular among young people to speak to each other.
And Little or Lil Prince/Princess sets my teeth on edge too.
I hate baby too, when it should be the baby - as in, “and is baby moving today?”
Plus I hate being called mum by the likes of doctors or dentists, as in “take a seat over there, mum.” Or “fill in this form, mum.”

Grumblepants · 16/11/2018 18:42

I have a fb friend that's always posting "can't wait to get home from work to see my hubbie and kiddies". It makes me irrationally angry. I know I need to block her to save my sanity.

ForalltheSaints · 16/11/2018 18:45

I try to remember whether someone's child is a boy or a girl (such as for work colleagues), to avoid having to use any phrase such as this. Though I will use others such as the 'small person' or 'newest family member' if I am unaware or have forgotten.

PippaRabbit · 16/11/2018 18:45

Stargirl90 I'm in Scotland and 'bairns' is used daily with most people I know.

PenCreed · 16/11/2018 18:49

I know someone who uses “bubsy” which is pretty grim. She also calls her husband “hubsy”. It makes me shudder.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 16/11/2018 18:52

They say "bain" in the city where I live, Christ it sets my teeth on edge. It wouldn't be so bad if they said "bairns" but bains is awful. Also, "baby girl" for any female over the age of 4.

SnuggyBuggy · 16/11/2018 18:56

It's bain in the North I think. I find it weird when people use the term baby for anyone who isn't a baby, like my baby sister when said sister is a teenager who happens to have been born after you.

I use most of these phrases 🤣...except lil bub or bubz
I often say little man or little lady and my ds, I often refer to as the boy..

Sexy is waaaau off though. I would never say that.

TowerRavenSeven · 16/11/2018 19:13

YY to littles! Every blog I get on has a reference to 'the littles' it just makes me think of the pied piper mice for some reason.

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 16/11/2018 19:19

DB & DSil insisted on "lil man" - Ugh! made me cringe every time. Enough to drive one to Gin.

thisisreallyfunny · 16/11/2018 19:21

Prince
Princess
Little One
Litlun
Little Man
Little Lady

Can't stand any of the above!!

meow1989 · 16/11/2018 19:32

Are we talking about referring to the child to someone else? I call my son little one, bubs, bubba, munchkin and variations of his name, but to him, not when I'm talking about him. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cattenberg · 16/11/2018 19:37

If I don't know the sex of a baby, I tend to ask the baby its name. This worked fine for years as the parents would just answer for them. But lately I've had a couple of mums look at me as though I'm insane, so I may need to change tack.

I thought that "Little People" was a term used by some people with dwarfism to describe themselves.

I've known a couple of women who always referred to their boyfriends as "The Boy". Yuck.

Our GP calls DD "little one" and her legs "leggies". So clearly these are the correct medical terms we should all use.
