AIBU to hate the term ‘little one’ so much?

Ok I know IABU but I LOATHE it. It’s such a cutesy, self-important, twee, naïf term. It immediately makes me bristle 😬

I use it, there are loads of babies I sort of know whose names I have forgotten!

twoshedsjackson · 16/11/2018 09:59

"Little one" is useful if you are not sure about name or even gender; when teaching (music, all ages, so not an instant recall of every class at start of term) I used to refer to the "mad little tinies" (kindly, I hope) but would sometimes speak directly to them as "ladies and gentlemen". Some found it slightly odd but did not seem to mind.

TooMuchTidying · 16/11/2018 12:01

I'm with you @Blanchedupetitpois

I also hate 'babe' instead of 'baby', and grown women referring to themselves and each other as 'mumma.' Like 'you tell em mumma!!'

I also hate 'boobin' for breastfeeding....

Just ick.

I can't stand the infantilisation of grown women just because they are mothers. Like suddenly you're a twee cartoon marshmallow idiot who has to use cutesy toy words.

Thanks for the rant!

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/11/2018 12:05

My ex bil calls his gf 'this little one' and it gives me rage

SilentIsla · 16/11/2018 12:06

LO is worse. But yes, I agree it is cringeworthy. As is referring to teenagers at school as “our young people”. 🙄

Elfinablender · 16/11/2018 12:08

I like 'little one' for young children.

Hausfrau29 · 16/11/2018 12:13

My mother in law refers to my 2 year old daughter as her "little chitterling". I've not a fucking clue where it came from but I'd prefer "little one/un" as it infuriates me.
I also hate it when she asks for a cuddle of my 2 week old son by asking "Can I nurse him for a while?" as I always associate that with breastfeeding.
Come to think of it, most things that come out of her mouth bother me in some way 😂

JohnCRaven · 16/11/2018 12:18

YABU. It's helpful if you don't know the sex or name of the baby (& especially useful if you've forgotten this information!!)

Badwifey · 16/11/2018 12:20

I HATE "bubs" gives me the rage Angry

JacquesHammer · 16/11/2018 12:22

I know someone who uses “the girlchild”.

derxa · 16/11/2018 12:30

I like 'son' as in 'There you go, son'

SuperLambBananas · 16/11/2018 12:33

I am friends with a couple who constantly refer to their son as "The small boy" on social media posts...it's so try-hard quirky, it really annoys!

harriethoyle · 16/11/2018 12:36

Little one or LO makes my teeth itch...I HATE IT!!

BadgersBiggestFan · 16/11/2018 12:38

Wee man makes me want to report them to SS

blackchina · 16/11/2018 12:43

I have never ever ever heard anyone use the term 'boobin the baby' in real life. Confused

I have only heard people complaining on here about others (supposedly) using it ...

Also don't get people who post here about their child and put L-O.

Just put daughter or son.

firawla · 16/11/2018 12:43

I like little one. Not a fan of “little man” “prinny” (as in princess!) “the boy” or people referring to their child as “this boy” “this girl”

Pissedoffdotcom · 16/11/2018 12:45

Wowsers glad none of you are my friends 🤣 we use little man, the boy, little dude & smallest for DS.
DD is shortarse, bubs or small.

I'm exempt from hard labour currently i'm afraid

JacquesHammer · 16/11/2018 12:47

prinny

Couldn’t get over that being used for a child! Maria Fitzherbert used to call George IV “Prinny” Grin

SoftBlocks · 16/11/2018 12:54

As AjasLipstick said - ‘The Boy’. I can’t stand it. Little Man is awful too.

HildaZelda · 16/11/2018 13:00

I hate 'my little man', 'my little princess' and 'the smallie' as a friend of mine refers to her now 6 year old.

Sciurus83 · 16/11/2018 13:04

I prefer larva

Oobis · 16/11/2018 13:21

No problem with Little one. The bab, Prince, princess, mini me, little lady are slightly irritating. Especially when hashtagged - #minime #loveher #myworld

SnuggyBuggy · 16/11/2018 13:46

Wee man just makes me think of that scene where Fat Bastard tried to eat Mini Me

Spiderdemon · 16/11/2018 13:52

I like the name Lit Lun... sort of like Declan, or Lachlan.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 16/11/2018 13:56

There was a dad on NICU who referred to his newborn as "sexy lady"

I call DC 'little person' but only to them, not about them to others. In fact one of DD1 first words was 'parson', pointing self importantly at herself. I also like 'tiny woman' as a jokey equivalent to the awful little man - I call DD2 that sometimes.

My mum used to call us creatures and if she thought we wanted to say something, she would bellow "speak, creature" or "utter" in a deep voice.
