AIBU to hate the term ‘little one’ so much?

Ok I know IABU but I LOATHE it. It’s such a cutesy, self-important, twee, naïf term. It immediately makes me bristle 😬

My friends Dad called his second daughter the boy or bob for years, the next child he had was male (he’d always wanted a boy). But the son he got was nothing like what he wanted. He preferred his second daughter and called her bob 😂

LilMy33 · 16/11/2018 08:45

No one ever says much to my sister about the sexy thing. We’re clearly a very repressed family. When mine were small I’d do that cop out thing of talking to her through the baby “you’re not sexy you’re a baby!” Type of thing.

BunsOfAnarchy · 16/11/2018 08:45

Black country lass over here so i get a lot of people asking 'ow oldz the babby?/is babby a girl or boy?'

Babby used to piss me off but i find it quite endearing now lol Grin

Blanchedupetitpois · 16/11/2018 08:48

I think if you’re using it to refer to someone else’s kid cos you can’t remember their gender that’s just about acceptable. If you’re using it to talk about your own child you should be sentenced to mandatory hard labour.

I say sprout Grin talking about mine and munchkin about others

Blanchedupetitpois · 16/11/2018 08:56

I also think there’s a strong correlation between people saying ‘little one’ and people saying ‘our little family’ which is just as coy, self-indulgent and repulsive.

I've seen the term "littlies" on here a few times to refer to really small children. It really bugs me!

fanfan18 · 16/11/2018 08:57

*What about "The Boy"

People referring to their male child as "The boy"

WHY!???*

OMG Yes! I have an FB friend who starts 9 out 10 posts with "The Boy starts his first job today!" "The Boy turns 16 today!"

Also "The Girl" for her daughter.

ShotsFired · 16/11/2018 08:58

I assume calling a baby "it" would be frowned on? Grin

I agree OP. All that sickmaking "littl'un" type talk, yuck!

MrDonut · 16/11/2018 08:59

Bubs?
Bubba?
Wee man?
Crotchfruit?
Fruit of my loin?

OutPinked · 16/11/2018 08:59

Little one is fine. It’s little man/lady or prince/princess I absolutely detest.

Blanchedupetitpois · 16/11/2018 09:01

CROTCHFRUIT 😂😂😂

I absolutely can’t bring myself to use the abbreviations on here - LO, DH, DD etc.

In real life I do sometimes refer to my two youngest as “the boys” when talking to other adults or their big sister. They’re at the same school, so saying “I’ve got to go collect the boys” (for example) makes sense to everyone and is quicker than referring to them both by name every time. Am I going to get lynched?

Buns - also very used to ‘Babby’ over here Grin

AlphaJuno · 16/11/2018 09:02

I know someone with 3 kids who numbers them. So, 'No. 1 is going away with the school today!' 'No 2 did well in her production..'. This annoys me for some reason Confused.

Pickupthephone · 16/11/2018 09:02

‘Little one’ is mildly irritating but it’s nothing compared to ‘bubba’ or ‘bubs’.

ShotsFired · 16/11/2018 09:04

Mind you, "Mumma" is not any better...

BuggerandBalls · 16/11/2018 09:04

Crotchfruit will absolutely be my go-to from now on!

BluePigeon · 16/11/2018 09:07

Yes, littlies is much, much worse and I've only ever seen it on here. No one I know uses it in real life.

BuffaloCauliflower · 16/11/2018 09:07

I don’t mind little one, but little man and little princess gives me the rage.

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/11/2018 09:08

I call Dd The Childer, she calls me The Mother.

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 16/11/2018 09:22

It doesn't bother me, I think it is OK, but I hate little-un though!

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 16/11/2018 09:26

What's self-important about 'little one'? I don't use it myself, but I fail to see where it's self-important.

Agree re the grimness of 'little man' and 'little princess'. (Can't help finding something a bit endearing about 'little lady'. Don't ask me why).

petbear · 16/11/2018 09:28

I hate 'little one' too. But particularly when people say 'L.O.' Just grates on me for some reason.

'Little man' is awful.

Aethelthryth · 16/11/2018 09:31

YANBU Ghastly

Solasshole · 16/11/2018 09:45

"Little people" instead of children fucks me right off

"What do the little people want to eat tonight?" Just no. Ugh.
