To ask why nobody on MN will say what their hobby is?

So many threads involving time and money spent on either their own or partners hobby, but never any mention of what the hobby is. Perhaps there is some sort of hobby hierarchy that I am unaware of where some hobbies are seen as bragging and some down right embarrassing.

OP posts:
Hecatethewitchescat · 23/11/2018 22:08

My hobby is reading mumsnet whilst procrastinating about doing work towards my Masters’s degree.
In real life I would prefer to socialise, read, run and not work full time whilst having 3 children under 16.

ilovepixie · 23/11/2018 22:10

My hobby is smoking, eating and getting shit faced on vodka.

spinabifidamom · 23/11/2018 22:13

Reading
Writing
Candlemaking
Gardening
Sewing

Foamybanana93 · 23/11/2018 22:20

My hobbies are my horses and baking, DP likes to play golf and fanny about cleaning his car Grin

Rayna37 · 23/11/2018 22:22

I always assume they mean triathlon. Really time consuming and potentially very costly.

Wishiwascycling · 23/11/2018 22:34

Yep Rayna I’m with you there !

TwiceMagic · 23/11/2018 22:43

Triathlon is really a super-hobby, because you can combine several things that are stupidly time consuming (and potentially expensive) all on their own.

Ringbinger · 23/11/2018 22:53

I’ve googled unusual hobbies and one of the suggestions was ‘extreme ironing’. Seeing as I don’t even do mundane ironing, I’ll be giving this one a pass.

Milliepede · 23/11/2018 23:19

I collect dust

SapphireSeptember · 23/11/2018 23:38

Make up is my hobby, I'm obsessed with the stuff! All the time I spend researching, buying it, playing with it, etc... Grin

My other hobby is getting into arguments about Severus Snape with fellow Potterheads on the internet, does that count?

NotUsedBySomeoneElse · 23/11/2018 23:40

I wouldn’t say what my main hobby is, because along with other things I’ve posted in this name (how long I’ve been married, how many siblings, vague area of work, a very specific surgery family member had etc) it would be identifying if people joined the dots. It’s a very specific gaming hobby, not one usually popular with women, and I’m heavily involved in the local scene for it to the point that any other local players would probably guess it was me.

Flaskfan · 23/11/2018 23:52

Does going to gym classes count as a hobby? I don't enjoy it, but it means I can drink without putting.g too mu h weight on. I read, but it's less of a hobby and more a way of turning my brain off so I.can.sleep.

Beingginger · 24/11/2018 00:09

I knit, crochet and sew. DH plays board games.
Totally outing and now I have to name change.

TheClitterati · 24/11/2018 01:04

I would really love to play bridge.

HappyStripper · 24/11/2018 03:43

Mine:

Plants / interior design
Painting/ Drawing / Macrame / embroidery (basically a range of arty stuff)
Pole dancing

My husband’s

Cars
Photography
Guns/Rifles - mostly pre ww1

We also like buying old stuff. I would say “antiquing” but it’s really not anything organized and it’s mostly mid century stuff.

We’re particularly hobby-y though, I’d say the vast majority of our friends don’t really have anything or have one thing they do sometimes.

KathyBates · 24/11/2018 04:06

I like to pick a hobby, spend days obsessing over it on Pinterest, buy all the kit I need for it and then never do it.
I have a large 'hobby cupboard' in my house full of my treasures x

echt · 24/11/2018 04:12

YABU for saying nobody does something when very obviously they do.

< Major beef about thread titles that generalise>

Ohshitwhatnext · 24/11/2018 04:21

I play the cello and ice hockey but not at the same time

Johnnycomelately1 · 24/11/2018 04:34

Trail running, weight lifting/ Crossfit, reading, eating crap and drinking wine.

Dh likes outrigger canoeing and gaming

The DC play various sports enthusiastically rather than with a great amount of talent and both like music (choir and play an instrument). DD also likes art and crafts. I suspect they will be jack of all trades but there are worse things to be- they enjoy the activities and the friendships they've made through them.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 24/11/2018 06:48

My ultimate hobby is running, I have run most days since I was 15 and am 37 now.

But I also like mountain biking, reading and pizza.

madcatladyforever · 24/11/2018 07:08

I build miniature dollshouses, 1:24 and 1:48 scale and make all the furniture and scenes for inside.
I also collect miniaturist artisan items and often commision items from artists. The joy of 1:48 is that nothing in that scale is going to be too expensive to buy.
I also do crosstitch and collect antiques when I can.
Oh yes and I collect cats obviously Smile

Deadbudgie · 24/11/2018 07:47

Been struggling with MH issues so not had the motivation for hobbies but now I’m starting to improve going to start researching family tree

thegreylady · 24/11/2018 07:53

I read a lot and enjoy looking after dgc. I also love toys. We have a dolls house and a model railway layout. I just gave away our Playmobil and Sylvanian Families though I have kept the SF narrow boat.

Archerygirl · 24/11/2018 08:05

My hobby is archery. And cross stitch. Dh is is gardening. I guess the combination could be outing

Dunkling · 24/11/2018 08:12

@Madcatlady...

Another dollhouser here. 1/12th for me. I don't 'make' the actual furniture, I buy from artisans and then tweek a little to make it my own, but I do make my own fixtures and soft furnishings etc.

Other hobby is interior design and vintage finds (and always on a new project or looking for a specific piece) , so I guess my dollhouse is an extension of this in miniature.
