To ask why nobody on MN will say what their hobby is?

So many threads involving time and money spent on either their own or partners hobby, but never any mention of what the hobby is. Perhaps there is some sort of hobby hierarchy that I am unaware of where some hobbies are seen as bragging and some down right embarrassing.

OP posts:
hoki · 23/11/2018 14:33

There was a thread this week where the OP said "me and DH watch a particular fictitious program based in a warm country about people on holidays" and blah blah. Why can't you just say "we watch Benidorm"!! Like saying you watch a certain telly show will immediately identify you.

Ilikeknitting · 23/11/2018 14:33

Er, the clue is in my name. I also enjoy larping, that’s a shared hobby with my dh. Does cleaning count as a hobby? I do a lot, and I do like it!

Ilikeknitting · 23/11/2018 14:35

Oh and I’m learning to play the ukulele, that’s got to be a real hobby too.

itsbritneybiatches · 23/11/2018 14:36

Mine is reading

TheClitterati · 23/11/2018 14:36

Sorry OP but my hobby is far too "outing". Grin

bumblenbean · 23/11/2018 14:39

My new hobby is going to be trying to guess what people’s undisclosed hobbies are on such mysterious threads. Grin

Btw, does anyone else think the word ‘hobby’ starts to look/sound really odd when read over and over again, such as in this thread?

Cassimin · 23/11/2018 14:43

I haven’t got a hobby at the moment other than watching the telly.
I have a great idea for a hobby though, home brew!
I have asked all my family to provide the equipment for my Christmas prezzie.
So for all of you who state your hobby is drinking wine/gin, get yourself a real hobby and make your own. Grin

Wishiwascycling · 23/11/2018 15:52

Millions of people worldwide apparently play bridge yet never have I heard it mentioned as a hobby here.
As for cycling, there aren’t too many female club riders where I live, it is a male dominated sport here so it could be outing IMO.
I have name changed because there are even fewer bridge playing competitive cyclists.

Esperantistino · 23/11/2018 16:22

I have name changed as frankly if I tell you that my passion is learning languages and attending Esperanto conferences and events and you were able to put that together with my geographical location and profession which crop up quite regularly in one form or another in my posts then if you knew me in RL you would easily recognise me.
So for one post only: libertempe mi parolas Esperanton.

MelanieCheeks · 23/11/2018 16:45

Scottish Country dancing (I've recently passed my teaching certificate), and parkrun, particularly parkrun touring and alphabet collecting. I've recently taken up singing again, and I do a bit of knitting.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 23/11/2018 16:53

@Wishiwascycling- I'm thinking about taking up bridge. If I do, I'll let the MN Massive know!!!

OffIGoToMairisWedding · 23/11/2018 17:00

@MelanieCheeks - hello to a fellow Scottish-type dancer Smile. Is that the rsscd exam? Think a friend has just done that too!

BollocksToBrexit · 23/11/2018 17:05

DH's hobbies are radio club (total nerd fest) and bat watching.

Mine is playing WoW.

Rudgie47 · 23/11/2018 17:05

My hobbies are sitting on the settee, eating biscuits and supermarket shopping and browsing the internet for better utility deals.
I also have 4 bikes and enjoy riding round on them when I can tear myself out of the house. Its been freezing and foggy so I've not been out this week on any of them.

raisedbyguineapigs · 23/11/2018 17:06

Because they don't want loads of people doing their 'hobby that they turned into a career and pays all the bills'. There are only so many artisan cupcakes one can eat Grin

OffIGoToMairisWedding · 23/11/2018 17:08

*RSCDS even, sorry!

wafflyversatile · 23/11/2018 17:09

Also when posting a long AIBU with lots of background they won't say because it is too outing.

And if complaining about DHs doing fuck all around the house or with kids they always have nameless hobbies that that take up all of Saturday and Sunday morning. I end up thinking they are all historic battle re-enactors, rather than just footie fans in the local.

Ringbinger · 23/11/2018 17:09

I have lots of lapsed ‘hobbies’ eg yoga classes and playing the piano.

I am now jealous I don’t have an unusual hobby. Can people please suggest really rare ones so that I can take one of them up then come on here in 6months and post about my un-revealable hobby?

LazyDoll · 23/11/2018 17:09

My 'hobbies' would be running, yoga, reading and baking. Not sure I've ever referred to any of them as hobbies before though. It's just the stuff I do when I'm not working or doing stuff with the children/family. Although I do run along side them on their bikes if I've not managed to fit in a run for a while!

Parker231 · 23/11/2018 17:12

DH and I both have separate sports related hobbies. DH is mad on golf and skiing and I like the gym and personal training sessions. We’ve both spent a couple of nights a week on our hobbies for the last 25 years and DH has a skiing holiday each winter.

Megan2018 · 23/11/2018 17:16

Horses - although more of a lifestyle choice than a hobby.
I have my own - so it is as much about the care side as the actual riding. I used to hunt and compete before horse was semi-retired.

I am very open about it and the enormous pile of money it burns through

It impacts heavily on my life and that of my non complaining DH.

We also have an assortment of other animals who also take up all our time and money

morningconstitutional2017 · 23/11/2018 17:19

Mine are reading, patchwork quilting and quizzing.

I 'potter' with cooking and gardening.

Writing and daydreaming.

OneStepMoreFun · 23/11/2018 18:09

It's nice to know there are some Scottish country dancers on here. @OffIGoToMairisWedding (Topical name, there Grin) and @MelanieCheeks Used to do that as a child and LOVED it. I have to do it once a year for work (bizarrely) to entertain foreign clients and always wish there was a club near me to do it more often.

Not sure I have anything I'd call a 'hobby' - I do yoga which I love, swimming which I don't but I love my swimming partner and we always have a good gossip and catch up in the sauna afterwards. I enjoy walking but rarely get to do a proper hike. It's all an hour here or there in local woods. I read and watch TV and bake a little bit. But doesn't everyone?

SD1978 · 23/11/2018 18:50

@Ringbinger- that's the joy of a 'niche' hobby which is identifying.......you don't actually even need to have one 😂😂😂😂 maybe take up competitive sheep shearing, while living in central London, then panic that someone may know who you are as you've revealed too much........

HicDraconis · 23/11/2018 18:52

Knitting, karate, playing the harp, baking (birthday cakes for friends), gaming (WoW and pathfinder), reading, running, mountain biking, tramping.

I don’t class weeding the vege beds or cleaning out the chickens as hobbies, they are chores that need to be done. But we spend very little on chicken food & get 10 eggs a day, and the veg I grow means we don’t have to buy shrink wrapped supermarket stuff.

Also work 50+h a week. Anyone who knows me will recognise me but it’s not a big deal.
