To ask why nobody on MN will say what their hobby is?

So many threads involving time and money spent on either their own or partners hobby, but never any mention of what the hobby is. Perhaps there is some sort of hobby hierarchy that I am unaware of where some hobbies are seen as bragging and some down right embarrassing.

@kmc1111
I bet your husband’s hobby is Real Tennis
I await my reward Grin

sweeneytoddsrazor · 15/11/2018 22:53

I tell my ds grocery shopping is not my hobby but as I don’t have one maybe it is 🤔

Stillnotready · 15/11/2018 23:02

Now that would be a coup! My friend’s DH plays it, so I’ll just ask her!

oldsewandsew · 15/11/2018 23:03

Haha, it had never even occurred to me that these secret hobbies could be such mainstream things such as running or golf! I always assumed people were talking about specialised craft activities or something. It has always had me thinking that the OP is a bit weird!

VitaminSea · 15/11/2018 23:03

DHs is archery (specifically longbow)
And mine is taxidermy

I like to think they're a little outing together...

Portillista · 15/11/2018 23:05

Mine is shagging DP.

Other than that, hobbies always seem to involve cycling.

chocolatebox1 · 15/11/2018 23:10

I don't actually have any real hobbies. I really just like reading threads on MN, reading random articles online, mostly about relationships and why people behave how they do and watching trash TV. I also enjoy spending hours looking at clothes websites, but rarely buy anything. I also like texting my mates and writing to do lists then procrastinating. I probably have outed myself to anyone who I know in RL who is reading this right now.

Singlenotsingle · 15/11/2018 23:10

No hobbies here, as I'm too busy running around after dgc, dealing with ddog, cleaning the house and "catching up" TV that I've missed.

maddiemookins16mum · 15/11/2018 23:11

My hobbies are (in no particular order)

Watching mindless tv shows
Playing games on my iPad
Nanna naps (on a Saturday afternoon)

Singlenotsingle · 15/11/2018 23:13

You'd get a lot more shags if you lived with him Portillista (as long as you haven't got 4 DC, that is)

Portillista · 15/11/2018 23:17

I would quite like to shag him several times a day, singlenotsingle. Though maybe I wouldn't, if I lived with him. Grin I do have 3 DC, but they are from my abominable marriage.

Saracen · 15/11/2018 23:23

I refer to hobbies when talking about how my DP spends his time, to underline the fact that he does these things because he enjoys them, though he claims it's done to benefit the whole family. He reckons my pastimes aren't productive, so they are just hobbies. I get nowhere near as much hobby time as he does. If I named his hobbies without identifying them as hobbies, you lot might side with him instead of me.

Examples: He keeps chickens. Nobody else in the family is fond of chickens. Yes, they give us eggs, but he spends more money on chicken food than we save on eggs. They are pets, not livestock. This is a hobby. Even when he is cleaning them out, or driving to the other side of the county to buy cheap chicken food, or fixing the broken chicken house, he is doing his hobby, not "work".

Same with the allotment. I'm sure the veg is nicer than what we'd buy at Tesco, but honestly I would be happy enough with Tesco veg.

Beekeeping. They've never thrived well enough to give us any honey. Keeping bees is good for the environment and all, but it is still a hobby.

Going round the car boot sales, buying broken machinery, fixing it up and usually giving it to friends. Or using it for the hobbies above. It's lovely of him. It is a hobby.

200 years ago all this stuff would have been of economic value to our household. Now it is just a bit of fun. So yes, on MN I wouldn't say exactly what my DP was up to, just "doing his hobby".

For the record, my hobbies are chess and reading. I don't pretend they are anything other than amusement.

UnRavellingFast · 23/11/2018 01:59

Ah yes the ‘I do sooo much’ - ie stuff he chooses while I did the ‘grunt’ work and mopped up all the emotions etc. But now I am free to pursue my very serious interests of strictly, reading and wine consumption -yay! And somehow we manage ok without the hedges and trees being hacked for hours every weekend , with lots of ‘holding stuff’ demands by the important busy man 😂 all is good now.

SD1978 · 23/11/2018 02:06

Ooh- I also like a good I work in a niche sector that I can't mention as it's so specialist it's outing......surely I'm not the only person on here with a boring normal non niche job? (Nurse)

Ladygodivasroom · 23/11/2018 02:13

My job is so niche it hasn't been invented yet, leaving plenty of time for my non outing hobby of budgerigar taxidermy featuring Doc Marten boots.

GobKnobbler · 23/11/2018 04:44

Mine's Morris Dancing. Never mind name changing, will have to leave Mumsnet now.

SymphonyofShadows · 23/11/2018 05:04

I collect skulls! My hobbies are mainly gigging and collecting vinyl records though.

Mamaryllis · 23/11/2018 05:17

Gobknobbler - nah you’re in good company. SGB is a morris dancer. I’ve been trying to get my head round that for years Grin

stegosauruslady · 23/11/2018 07:23

I always think that they are vaguely embarrassed by the hobby in question.

My hobbies are knitting, reading, gaming (tabletop and video) and running. DP likes gaming, guitar and learning Japanese.

ifeelsoextraordinary · 23/11/2018 07:37

I think it’s because people are worried others may automatically make assumptions about them or their partner. I’ll admit, when I read about golf or cycling I automatically imagine what kind of person they are. It’s a kind of stereotyping. I read ‘DH hobby is cycling’ and I immediately picture middle-ages Lycra clad, arrogant, looking for excuses to get out of family life, obsessed with expensive bikes. This is based on my experiences with certain cyclist types. I KNOW not all male cyclists are like that (NAMCALT!) but it is my subconscious bias kicking in. I guess people don’t say which hobbies to try and avoid those biases in the reader.

needsahouseboy · 23/11/2018 07:41

I don't have any hobbies, my lazy fat arse nature, full-time job, single parent that has no input from the stupid feck I had a child with, childs many activities, and my inability to be organised past 7pm sees to that Grin

OffIGoToMairisWedding · 23/11/2018 09:59

I've NC'd for this based on one hobby. I love reading, cooking and baking, crosswords, quizzes, collecting perfume and pearls and books about jewellery, visiting stately homes and watching detective and true crime shows. I'm also looking to get back into choral singing and swimming. All pretty standard . My normal nn reflects one of these.

My big hobby is Scottish reeling (hence the name change). I'm not in Scotland so I don't know how "niche" this is. It's a well attended hobby where I am but a tight social circle. Out of that group, no one seems to have heard of it. This is pretty anonymous but given that I do reveal other life details on mn, I'd rather not take the chance I'm identifiable through a more unusual detail, have someone join the dots and spot me. Unlikely but not impossible. I've seen a couple of threads where people explain how they've id'd someone through hobbies like tennis, based on other details. I'd rather not chance that, so you can all imagine I go dogging instead.

Chutneyorchids · 23/11/2018 14:28

I think it's gaming and I think people don't say because they're embarrassed.

Geekster1963 · 23/11/2018 14:32

Mine are running and watching rubbish on the telly.
