Songs - how did it’s meaning get so lost?

Sparked from another thread that was slightly off topic but reminded me how irritated I get by it-
Anyone else feel a slow burning rage when people mistake the meaning of songs so for example I have been to a fair few weddings where the couple walk onto the dance floor and their song is ‘marry you’ or ‘every breath you take’
Now I know it’s their choice, their song so who cares but I can’t help that little build up in side that makes me what to grab the mic and shout ‘listen to the words people!!’
Just want to point out that I’ve never actually done that, I stand there and smile
Am I alone in getting irritated by something so pointless?

We talked about having me walk up the aisle to When I’m 64 but decided not to

Shoxfordian · 15/11/2018 08:24

" Just the way you are " annoys me
Its actually quite impolite
"I don't want clever conversation" oh thanks
"Don't go trying some new fashion" (you're frumpy)

Can't believe someone had the A team!

Tiredandemotional123 · 15/11/2018 08:30

We had the classical song 'gymnopedie' played at my dad's funeral. Someone later told us that 'gymnopedie' means 'naked wrestling Grin. He would have found that funny luckily.

SisterMortificado · 15/11/2018 08:37

DH and I had "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" as I came down the aisle
I checked and double checked the lyrics though- the number of times I've commented that people mustn't have read the lyrics meant that I knew at least three friends were hoping to pull the piss out of me

treaclesoda · 15/11/2018 08:41

I'm not bothered about funeral-y hymns at weddings. But that might be due to having been brought up in an evangelical church where ultimately all hymns and/or sermons were ultimately about death or the end of the world. And hell. Lots of hell.

DRE56322 · 15/11/2018 08:45

Band of gold was played at a wedding I went to. Caused many a raised eyebrow!

DamnCommandments · 15/11/2018 08:47

Yes, yes re: The Road Less Travelled. Robert Frost is just ripe for misinterpretation. See also "Mending Walls" and the 'good fences make good neighbours' line.

Canyonkeys · 15/11/2018 08:56

Most weddings I’ve been to have had appropriate songs but I’ll be looking out for dodgy ones at any future weddings I go to.

My favourite is Scotty McCreery - This is it
The video for this song is actually him and his wife on their own wedding day. Check it out, it’s lovely.

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 15/11/2018 09:01

DS is a huge Prince fan, and was going out with a lovely girl called Nicola. I said "If you ever get married, I bet your wedding dance will be Darling Nikki! "

😂😂😂😂😂😂

NotUmbongoUnchained · 15/11/2018 09:07

We didn’t have an a royal wedding, but when me and my husband eloped we went to a bar after and slow danced to “Fuck her gently” for our first dance. Was beautiful Grin

Raglansleeve · 15/11/2018 09:07

We walked out to Christy Moore’s The Voyage

I am a sailor, you’re my first mate
We signed on together, we coupled our fate
Hauled up our anchor, determined not to fail
For the heart’s treasure together we set sail.

Life is an ocean and love is a boat
In troubled water it keeps us afloat
When we started this voyage it was just me and you
Now gathered round us, we have our own crew.

The whole song is perfect for a wedding

The Voyage

A friend’s fiancée wanted Bette Midler’s The Rose Hmm. The vicar said no!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 15/11/2018 09:07

An actual wedding*
Royal wedding Grin

CoperCabana · 15/11/2018 09:14

I was NOT expecting to see Shania love on a Mumsnet thread! From This Moment gets me every single time!

mydogisthebest · 15/11/2018 09:27

We had "Just the way you are". We both love the song and the lyrics.

RuggerHug · 15/11/2018 09:41

The Shania love is amazing. I just associate it with a documentary on Irish tv years ago about a registry office. The staff were asked about music and they all said 'bloody SHANIA' because every couple for about 4 years at that stage used that album and they had to feign joy every time. 😁

We had the game of thrones theme tune in our wedding....😮

FreiasBathtub · 15/11/2018 09:58

We had a v small wedding so no music/first dance but I have fond memories of me and DH bellowing 'One Day Like This' by Elbow at each other in the karaoke bar we ended up in with our friends that night. Happy times.

7Days · 15/11/2018 10:12

The Christy Moore one would be very appropriate for a wedding anniversary party.

I'm sad to hear about The Time of Your Life. It was sang at the funeral of a teenager by his pals. It did seem just right.

Brazenhussy0 · 15/11/2018 10:18

DP and I want The Prentenders ‘I’ll Stand by You.’

That’s an ok one isn’t it? Worried now in case there’s some hidden meaning we’ve missed Grin

Brazenhussy0 · 15/11/2018 10:22

The Pretenders* even Blush

icebearforpresident · 15/11/2018 10:26

I would love to go to a wedding with Darling Nikki as the first dance 🤣

Not inappropriate at all really but I once went to a wedding where the bride walked down the aisle to the Jurassic Park theme. It’s actually a really nice piece of music but I could barely hold it together!

AintNobodyHereButUsRavens · 15/11/2018 10:31

My friend and her husband had 'Another One Bites The Dust' as their wedding dance Grin They're still together 17yrs later though!

Another story about that song, SILs stepdad was dying and the family threw a big party for him, as a final big family get together before he died. The DJ unthinkingly played Another One Bites The Dust Shock Luckily most people found it hysterical!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 15/11/2018 10:40

Every Breath You Take is a jolly good shagging song. It has three different "tempos". So you can go slow, slower or frantic.

Just saying.

Mrsglitterfairy · 15/11/2018 10:45

My friend had Arctic Monekys’ ‘mardy Bum’ as their first dance. It’s basically a man singing about how his misses is a moody arse. I loved it! Was a little gutted as would have loved it as our first dance as me & DH sing it all the time. To me not him haha!!

One that always gets me, not that I’ve heard it at weddings, is The Verve’s ‘drugs dont work’ as people tend to think that it’s about someone hooked on drugs but it’s actually about his mum (I think) going through cancer treatment. Once I found that out it changed the whole meaning of the song for me

AlexanderHamilton · 15/11/2018 10:51

I've known people have Abide with Me at a wedding in memory of a deceased parent.

I wanted Mozart Et in carnatus est but felt it didn't make sense on ites own so had Laudamus Te instead.

thighofrelief · 15/11/2018 10:54

weird well i never! I always think it's a really sexy song.
