Songs - how did it’s meaning get so lost?

Sparked from another thread that was slightly off topic but reminded me how irritated I get by it-
Anyone else feel a slow burning rage when people mistake the meaning of songs so for example I have been to a fair few weddings where the couple walk onto the dance floor and their song is ‘marry you’ or ‘every breath you take’
Now I know it’s their choice, their song so who cares but I can’t help that little build up in side that makes me what to grab the mic and shout ‘listen to the words people!!’
Just want to point out that I’ve never actually done that, I stand there and smile
Am I alone in getting irritated by something so pointless?

YANBU... though it makes me snigger 😂

BoooForYou · 17/11/2018 08:34

@purplealienpuke I love Wish you Were Here, that's DH and my song. It's the "2 lost souls" bit.
At my funeral, I want Genesis, Ripples, off the Trick in the Tale album. Beautiful.

Spike Jones & His City Slickers singing: "I Went To Your Wedding" should be the compulsory first dance at EVERY wedding......

Ylvamoon · 17/11/2018 11:01

Grin I had the intro from "November Rain" walking down the aisle....
I just think it's the most amazing & dramatic piece of music I can think of.
I am well aware of the lyrics... there are several interpretations in opposite directions.

Please can someone explain "what a night" is about?

BikeRunSki · 17/11/2018 11:54

Maturity ten storey love song is inspired!

My sister and her DH ended the night with “I wanna be adored”! 😊

VisitorsEntrance · 17/11/2018 14:01

I’ve been informed, Scribbles that it’s about an encounter with a prostitute, although I’m not sure I believe that.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 17/11/2018 14:34

we had Mumford & sons - there will be time.

As a teenager I used to waitress in a hotel in a famous wedding town, this hotel could easy host 3-4 weddings/receptions a day and the most popular song of choice was Enrique Iglesias - hero, also used to get a lot of don’t want to miss a thing

Daisypp · 17/11/2018 16:09

Dear Lord & Father of mankind
Forgive our foolish ways
In my youth we thought this was the funniest hymn ever for a wedding

VisitorsEntrance · 17/11/2018 16:28

The thing was that until other venues were licensed for weddings (late 90s iirc) lots of people got married in church who weren’t church goers, so they picked the hymns they knew from school.

Curlyshabtree · 17/11/2018 17:00

Gorgeous by Babybird was oft misconstrued - nowt gorgeous about sexual exploitation

NannyKasey · 17/11/2018 18:16

Probably outing me here. My now ex H and I had our first dance to 'Lady in Red' by Chris de Burgh, as we were, along with my DB, going to see him the next day before going on honeymoon on the Monday. My DB had written to Chris de Burgh and he played 'In a Country Churchyard' for us. I can just about listen to both songs without feeling tearful Sad

RJnomore1 · 17/11/2018 18:55

Into my arms is my funeral song. That and If You Have To Go.

Thisonewilldo · 17/11/2018 19:00

My friend is a massive Bon Jovi fan and always gets massive rage when someone has 'Always' as a first dance.

We had so beautiful by Savage Garden, fav bit:
Whether I'm up or down
There's no crowd to please
I'm like a faith without a clause to believe in it
And if all the world was smiling
I would only ever want to see your frown
You know they can sail away in sunsets
We'll be right here stranded on the ground
Just happy to be found

You make me feel so beautiful
Nowhere else in the world I wanna be
You make me feel so beautiful

RJnomore1 · 17/11/2018 19:05

It was me who lay with a wedding band...well I did date the guitarist...😳

Anyway moving on...

If you have to go is by Geneva.

FrustratedBeyond · 17/11/2018 19:14

My DSis had November Rain as her song Hmm

Hefzi · 17/11/2018 19:26

My SIL chose Goldigga as their first song. No-one can say she wasn't up-front about it Grin

OhFlipMama · 17/11/2018 19:43

Song lyrics mean a lot to me, I'm one of those annoying people who can't bear to hear them sung incorrectly. I don't understand why people don't find out meanings first.

TooManyPaws · 18/11/2018 17:08

I love I'm Gonna (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers but the tune and tempo is quite literally footstomping even if the lyrics are great.

I am making lots of notes here - finally getting married next May and planning to have a playlist rather than hiring a DJ; this thread is very helpful!

Oh What A Night, a couple of lines run 'Y'know I didn't even know her name, But I was never gonna be the same.' Isn't it about a young man's first sexual encounter with a young woman on a one-night stand?

And on that note, would Afternoon Delight be something for after the children and grandparents have gone, or a first dance?

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 18/11/2018 22:33

I thought Oh What A Night was about a ONS rather than a hooker. I thought he'd just shagged someone he met at a party!

Clawdy · 18/11/2018 22:36

Definitely a memorable one night stand - we've all been there!

Flutternotsoshy · 18/11/2018 22:42

My (Hopelessly Soppy) DP wants to pick our first dance song.

Latest idea is Glory of Love by Peter Cetara.
Which isn't too bad.

And yy to getting the rage when people have Always by Bon Jovi.

Also don't get why people have you're beautiful... It's about a druggy stalking a woman (and her boyfriend) on the tube...

Ariela · 18/11/2018 22:48

@popcornwizard for a moment I thought you'd attended our wedding.......but ours played 'Congratulations'.
