Songs - how did it’s meaning get so lost?

Sparked from another thread that was slightly off topic but reminded me how irritated I get by it-
Anyone else feel a slow burning rage when people mistake the meaning of songs so for example I have been to a fair few weddings where the couple walk onto the dance floor and their song is ‘marry you’ or ‘every breath you take’
Now I know it’s their choice, their song so who cares but I can’t help that little build up in side that makes me what to grab the mic and shout ‘listen to the words people!!’
Just want to point out that I’ve never actually done that, I stand there and smile
Am I alone in getting irritated by something so pointless?

@Twaniac

I fookin wubz Shania. Beautiful woman, and a lovely voice, and fab songs! Her 90's album 'Come On Over' is one of the most played CDs in my collection. It was HUGE back then!

Taken from wikipedia.

Come On Over is the third studio album recorded by Canadian singer Shania Twain. It was released on November 4, 1997. It became the best-selling country music album ever, the best-selling studio album by a female act ever, and the best selling album by a Canadian ever. It is the ninth best-selling album in the United States ever, and is in the top 15 best-selling albums in the United Kingdom - ever.

Did I remember to say EVER?! Blush

meepmoop · 15/11/2018 00:09

I used to work at a wedding venue, Adele someone like you was chosen so many times...

Pasithea · 15/11/2018 00:12

Walked in to in my life the Beatles and out to good old Etta

thighofrelief · 15/11/2018 00:30

If i got married for the 3rd time it would have to be "oops i did it again" by Britney.

OptimisticIntrovert · 15/11/2018 00:30

We had The Smiths' There Is A Light That Never Goes Out as our first dance...

Which conversely IS a love song but the most miserable depressing one...

"And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine"

There was some pearl-clutching going on that night but it suited us ...

thighofrelief · 15/11/2018 00:32

Pixies "here comes your man" would be cool.

Mrsfrumble · 15/11/2018 00:49

I wanted Gigantic by Pixies for our first dance. Luckily a friend pointed out that it was actually about Kim Deal’s husband’s big dick, so we didn’t go with that one! Instead we had You & Me song by the Wannadies. The line about watching TV ‘til we fall asleep was like a glimpse into our futures, now we’re forty-somethings with small kids who can’t sit through a 40 minute episode of anything without nodding off.

I've heard of green day's 'good riddance' being sung at a funeral

That's because most people think it's called 'Time of your Life' because that's what it was promoted as on most radio stations and time of your life usually shows up in brackets after the official title.
I don't think many people get the sarcastic element of 'I hope you had the time of your Life' 🙄

Billie Joe Armstrong reportedly wrote it for a girlfriend that left him to move away and his anger about it.

Dhalandchips · 15/11/2018 03:06

Bloody band of bloody gold gives me the irrational rage!!
You are my sunshine is also a song about breaking up but I've sung it every night for the last 23 years! My poor kids!

AngeloMysterioso · 15/11/2018 04:35

Friends of mine had Broken Strings by James Morrison & Nelly Furtado as their first dance. A duet about the end of a relationship and how it’s all gone to crap.

IsSheWeird · 15/11/2018 04:46

Thighofrelief it's about waiting for a drug dealer Grin

KitanaKay · 15/11/2018 04:57

@mongertruffle what’s misunderstood about the Road Not Taken?

Worst two choices for first dances I have heard are Make You Feel My Love by Adele and My All by Mariah Carey. Both beautiful songs but I don’t get happiness from either!

Dawsonforehead · 15/11/2018 05:15

I used to think "oh what a night" was about a party, and that late December 1963 must have been a fun time of year for a good dance. Then I met DH and he explained....

Donthugmeimscared · 15/11/2018 06:10

@Dawsonforehead I have always thought the same!

RolandDeschainsGilly · 15/11/2018 06:17

@Dione I love Dead Kennedy’s Grin

My friend had The Fray - Look After You.

One of my male friends had Etta - At Last... At both his weddings Confused Was awkward as fuck for those of us who were at the first one and knew Grin

BoooForYou · 15/11/2018 06:17

The whole Every Breath one cracks me up. I've been to two weddings where that was played.
We deliberately took the pee with ours. DH is not a fan of dancing in public, much less slow dancing, so we had California Love by 2pac, had everyone in stitches.

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 15/11/2018 06:33

I walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of She Moved Through the Fair. It’s an Irish folk song about 2 young lovers who want to get married, but her family disapproves, and by the end of the song the would-be-bride is a ghost! I knew what the song was about but love the music and we weren’t using the words so went with it anyway.

We debated many inappropriate songs for exiting the church and our first dance - we both hate being the centre of attention so we knew we’d want to get them over and done with as soon as we could. (Ditto walking down the aisle - I argued with the minister at our rehearsal because I was apparently walking too fast and people wouldn’t be able to see me properly - I just wanted to get down the aisle and get married - people watching me was the least of my priorities!) Daniel Beddingfield’s I Gotta Get Thru This was a strong contender for a while, as was The Proclaimers It’s Over and Done With. (We used neither)

HandbagCrazy · 15/11/2018 06:54

Friends of ours had With or Without You as their first dance. Brides mum actually said to me she had never listened to the words before and wanted to know if bride realised they were dancing to the line "I can't live with or without you" Confused

rosesarered9 · 15/11/2018 07:28

People think that The Road Not Taken says that you should make your own way in life and be unique. However, it’s actually suggesting that our decisions don’t matter and we can’t change fate.

DollyWilde · 15/11/2018 07:35

We had a pretty trad first dance (Baby I’m Yours) but I created the wedding playlist for the party after and around 11.40pm I was dancing barefoot in my wedding dress to Smack Your Bitch Up Grin

DollyWilde · 15/11/2018 07:36

*Smack My Bitch Up

Apologies, I haven’t had coffee yet... Brew

ApolloandDaphne · 15/11/2018 07:59

My friend sang Evergreen at our wedding. It was lovely.

FearLoveAndTheTimeMachine · 15/11/2018 08:06

More of a misheard lyric, but the funniest thing I’ve seen on MN was a poster talking about the OP’s boyfriend and how he’d seen her naïveté coming a mile off, mishearing the lyrics to an Amy Winehouse song:

‘He sniffed you out like you was takeaway’

😂😂😂 still makes me lol when I remember it now. It was said so earnestly lol

Whatjusthappenedthere · 15/11/2018 08:13

I know a girl named after her parents favourite song. Lola. Confused
