Was asked to sing I Will Always Love You at a wedding. I refused as the first line is “If I should stay, I would only be in your way.”
Bride then suggested My Heart Will Go On. I explained the meaning of the song.
Then she asked for There You’ll Be which has exactly the same back story as the above song (dead lover).
She chose I Will Always Love You as her first dance anyway. 18 months later sadly they divorced.
Also had to recently explain to a bride and groom that Abide With Me is a hymn about death. They had read the lyrics and said the words were especially meaningful and they wanted it as their entrance hymn;
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens Lord, with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me
Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day
Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away
Change and decay in all around I see
O Thou who changest not, abide with me
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness
Where is death's sting?
Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee
In life, in death, o Lord, abide with me
Abide with me, abide with me.
Many people absolutely do not listen to the words. Some people just don’t care.
